Help IOing a Grav/FF...

Hey there,

Now that I have spent a lot more time on Wylde-Fire due to the Incarnate content... I want to make him the best that I can... on a limited budget.

Ultimately, I would like some assistance in slotting Wylde-Fire up the best that I can keeping two things in mind: I can't dedicate a gigantic budget to him (a few hundred million will suffice), and I would like to stick to the concept that he manipulates force and Gravity (aka no Fire as an Epic, for example).

Right now, he is a Level 50 Controller with Grav/FF/Primal and the Medicine, Inherent Stamina and Flight pools.

Any suggestions for what I should do with him?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I know Gravity is considered pretty underpowered... but no one has anything to say?

We have been getting a lot of "Make me a build" requests lately, so those often don't get many (or any) responses. Plus, Grav/FF is not an overly popular combo.

You would do better to ask specific questions or post a proposed build. Open ended questions like "Any suggestions for what I should do with him?" are asking for a snarky response. You should explain your playstyle, how much you team or solo, and what your goals are. Try making a reasonably priced build and ask if that build will work with your goals.

I have a level 50 Grav/FF/Primal that is at the ranged def cap. He has the tier 2 incarnate and was built pretty much on the cheap, minus the LotGs, but few purples and PvPIOs. I don't have the build handy here at work, but I can answer specific questions or critique a build.

By the way, I don't believe grav/FF is underpowered at all. In fact, there are times when I feel like it is one of the most overpowered sets I play. Your bubbles keep the team standing, your control is among the best, your pet is awesome at keeping you from worrying at all about melee (making hitting the ranged cap doubly effective), and Propel+Power Blast is a nice one-two ranged punch. plus, you have some quirky -if oft underused- powers with great effects, like Wormhole and Force Bubble.

Never argue with stupid people. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I don't really consider it underpowered either... but I don't see many of them around and it seems like if it isn't a */Rad or */Kin or Ill/* or Fire/* it doesn't exist. So I was more commenting on the attitude above than voicing my own opinion.

I guess I can see where you got that impression... but that isn't really my intention. I would just like some general pointers of what sets might be effective and compliment the Primary/Secondary... I don't require anyone to work up a full build and post it for me. I was just asking for a pointer or two in the right direction.

As far as playstyle and such go:
  • I never PvP... ever.
  • I like to team with my in-game friends. Lately, I have been planning to run a bunch of TFs with said group. (Just did an STF recently... [Detention Field] came in handy!)
  • I rarely if ever solo with this dude.
  • Specifically, I would like a bit more survivability outside of PFF, and a touch more in the area of endurance. I find myself running low after an extended battles (esp. versus a single hard target like the Patrons ).
And as far as coming up with an example build or an "inexpensive" one? I haven't a clue where to even begin. This is the very first character I have ever tried to IO and haven't the foggiest what goes for what amount aside from a few of the standout really expensive sets... which I obviously won't be using anyway. Essentially, I would be going through Mids blindly picking sets and hoping they aren't expensive. Hence my question in the first place.

At the moment, I have a Perf. Shifter proc I picked up a long while back... a full set of one of each slotted: Lockdown, Enfeebled Operation and Stupefy. I had a piece or two from each I got as drops and simply completed the set. It looks like I too could/should go for Ranged Def.

Does any of that help you folks out?

I don't have a lot of thoughts on it yet but Primal is definitely the APP I would be looking to. Contained knockdown from the cages + 60% chance for knockdown in the AoE cone blast is too much mitigation for me to pass up. Add the chance to knockdown and chance to hold procs from purple sets in the AoE cages and Gravity become quite nice. While I wish it started about 40 levels earlier, high level Gravity Control actually is pretty decent.

I dunno how expensive the particular purple sets are that you allude to... but they are likely outside of my fiscal reach.

It is really pretty easy to earn 180-200 mil every 4 days just by doing 5 Tip missions per day and the Morality Mission when it comes up every 10 Tip Missions. (If you have 50 reward merits and 20 Mil Infl, you can buy an A-Merit once a day, speading up the process.) Two A-Merits will let you buy a Luck of the Gambler Recharge, the Kinetic Combat triple or one of several other highly desired recipes. Craft it and they usually sell on the market in the range of 200 Mil.

Admittedly, those purple sets have become extremely expensive. It just takes some time to get them. Once you have the Influence, make a low-ball bid and wait a while. Then inch it up and wait again.

It took me a few weeks to earn the purple Stun set for one character using this method, but I wasn't working it every day.

Hmmm, that Tip mission thing seems like a pretty good idea, actually.

I made you a possible starter build. Focus on being easy to obtain and a little room to grow into. This build would allow you to maximize your stats very cheaply to start out, and give you some places to mark for future development. I left the level 28 and 38 slots blank for you to select a power of your choice. Force Bubble, Repulsion Field, Detention Field, Fly, etc. You also have 2 left over slots to do with what you like.

This build is very close to the ranged cap when Hovering and capped while Hovering. It is built with for the Cardiac alpha tree to help reduce endurance costs, extend range, and increase slash/lethal resistance. Hitting Power Boost at any time caps you to everything for 15 seconds. Reach for it when you get jumped. You should also be hitting it when opening on enemies to max out your early controls. This will also make the alpha attack of any enemies you miss mostly bounce off you.

For killing single targets, spam Crush, Lift, and Power Blast. Use Gravity Distortion as a control rather than an attack.

To give you an idea on how to shop, consider this tiered approach. You don't have to do it in this exact order, but this may give you some focus:

1) Go after the Thunderstrikes, Red Fortunes, and Titanium Coating first as they are offer the biggest immediate boosts and are cheap/easy to get. Also fill in the slots you will be using generic IOs.

2) Karma and Steadfast Protection procs. The latter may be expensive. Place an order for them and wait if you have to. If you can't afford yet, bypass and come back for it.

3) Positron's Blast, Stupefy, Expedient Reinforcement. Most of these recipes are not that expensive or hard to come by. Major expense may come from the rare components, typically around 3-5 mill each at current prices.

4) The various non-purple procs. I have no sense of price of these. Feel free to combine with 5 below.

5) Basilisk's Gaze, Decimation. The recipes themselves are probably much more expensive than what you've bought up to this point. Don't try to do it all at once. Place orders for recipes and leave them on the market.

6) Purple procs. Very expensive, but at least less so than full sets. Expect to pay 50-100 million just for the recipe. Soooo worth it once you have them.

7) Luck of the Gambler. Do not pay market price for these. Run hero tip missions and/or Task Forces. If you run 5 heroes a day, it will take 4 days to get eat LotG. You will need to play your character a bit to grab them. On the plus side, it's an excuse to play your character.

WOW! Thank you ever so much for what looks to be a great source of information and a very good direction for me to move toward. I shall have to scrounge a bit, but a good deal of that looks do-able.

No problem. One other small piece of advice. Never run around with lots of excess cash while you are still doing your building. Instead hang on to no more than about 50 million in "comfortable cash." Invest the rest into orders for recipes you need. It doesn't matter if the amount you bid is unrealistic; you lose nothing by placing bids. If you get lucky, you could log in the next day and have what you need. Naturally, you should only ever bid what you are actually willing to pay, but you're never at a loss by bidding less.
