Hardware request: Building Your Own CoH-friendly PC

So I needs to get a new computer, and since I got an A+ cert I figure I ought to put it to use by building my own box.

Problem is, I'd like to make it as CoH friendly as possible. I know to make it high-end performance as possible - max out the RAM, best available graphix card - but the specifics elude me.

I figure AMD cpu and motherboard make the most sense (AMD is better for gaming), but what's the minimum model and the optimal model to compare for purchasing?

I keep forgetting which graphics card is best: there's about ten-fifteen different ones out there, even by the same maker, so I am confused there.

One last question: does CoH/CoV/Going Rogue play on Linux (esp. the freeware versions)? I'm being cheap here, I'd like to avoid Windows as much as possible...

If you really want a high-end computer it won't be cheap. I, personally, would never pay less than 1000 for a good gaming computer. If you're going cheap, 800 is adequate.

Make sure it's custom too, CyberPowerPC specializes in that. If you get some "high-end" Dell it will be as loud as a steam engine and most likely laggy on Peggle Extreme.

Father Xmas has two good PC setups for CoX in his signature. I've personally built one of them (the $725) for my girlfriend and we both are very pleased with it. If you cruise around NewEgg you can get the next step up better RAM at equal price to the set listed in his list, as well as tweak a few odds and ends to suit yourself.

It doesn't run the best with ZOMGBELLSANDWHISTLESTOELEVENTY!!!!1!! but it does run well into the upper limits graphics-wise, and like I said before we are both very pleased with its performance in CoX. Something I was very pleased with was the CPU. The CPU listed can have it's hidden fourth core "unlocked" through the mobo BIOS, turning your tri-core into a quad-core processor. Very nifty.

I should hope so.

The CoH client itself will only use about 1.5GB of RAM before becoming flaky and unstable (legacy 32-bit Windows app issues).

Not sure who told you this. AMD is CHEAPER for gaming. But Intel's still the leader in pure performance on a per-core basis.

The nVidia Geforce GTX 580 is THE fastest single-card solution available.
Unfortunately it's also $500+

AMD has some nice Radeon cards that are slightly less performance-wise, but infinitely more affordable.

If you're okay with the Radeon lines (and some people aren't), go ahead. Honestly, I'm an nVidiot. I'll stick with them.

Look at the technical forums for how to get CoH set up in Linux and what you'll be giving up.

Don't simply be a platform bigot though. Wintendo has it's uses. And it's the #1 PC gaming platform for a reason.

If you want to go cheap, buy an OEM license of Windows 7 x64. Much cheaper than the retail, at the cost of being locked to the machine.

Thanks I will look at this.

I didn't design my PC specifically for COH, but more for chugging data in Photoshop and Xilinx. It does run COH, Champions and Titan Quest and other graphics intensive games.
An excel file of the parts is in Megaupload. It cost around $900 to build. The ASUS motherboard isn't in the list since it replaced the crappy Gigabyte motherboard.
Hope this helps!
