Stone/fire needs help

i've done a fair bit of searching, through different guides, some which say go perma granite, others which do their best to avoid it. i thought taking all of the armors would provide for the most flexibility in tanking. anyway, i have a build in mids, and without further ado, here it is:

my real question is: what should i be aiming for? i slotted sets which give a variety of resists and defenses. is there anything specific i should go for, or just go all-round?

Your slotting is certainly all over the place here as is your power order. First, the slotting.

Stone is based on typed defenses, not positional. Therefore the Obliteration set is a fairly poor choice; it offers melee defense primarily, not S/L which you're really after. You're slotting Stone Skin but leaving Tough, a high endurance toggle, at the base slot. You're putting that highly expensive Regen Tissue unique into Earth's Embrace where it's only active when you click the power. You're slotting Rooted with a very expensive PvP set using up a lot of slots that could be better used elsewhere. Combustion should be frankenslotted; stop Eradication at 4 slots and finish with Scirocco's Dervish for the regen bonus. Oh, and you're putting a 400 million inf Microfillament HO into Hurdle??? You realize a level 50 jump SO will do the exact same thing? And another in Boxing? The only thing that's doing for you is to give you 1 SO of endred for another 400 million.

Oh boy, and then there's Granite. There's two things you want from slotting Granite Armor... first you want to slot to the ED cap RESISTANCE; something you're completely neglecting. This is HUGE. Second, you want to slot to ED cap in defense. Granite really must be frankenslotted to get full benefit out of it; the way you're slotting it you're ending up about as tough as a shield tanker and nowhere even close to what a mature stone tank should be.

Yeah, I agree that build needs help, you're spending at least 4 billion inf on it and ending up with a less effective character than you could build with pure SO enhancements.

I don't agree with going full time Granite armor; in a lot of situations, particularly on small teams Granite's overkill so why load yourself down with the penalties when you don't need them. That's why I spend probably 50% of my time in Rock Armor/Rooted with Tough/Weave; at the 45% S/L defense cap you've enough durability for most medium tanking... if things turn nasty Granite's only a click away and it's (slotted right!) a great big fat "youuuu can't huuurt meee" button.

Building a Stone tanker I'm looking for three things in order: Runspeed bonuses, Recharge bonuses and finally typed defense bonuses for use outside of Granite.

My Stone/Fire tanker's current build isn't perfect; it's currently a compromise between what I'd really like to make and what I could do with my last respec without throwing away a lot of IO's and HO's. This is how he sits right now; I need a couple of respecs to get to what I really want. I built to maximize durability outside of Granite while also getting good runspeed and recharge bonuses. It wouldn't be cheap in today's market but it's in a transitional state between the 50+ HO's it had when issue 9 released and the final set IO build I want to end up with. Even so, it's far more effective than yours right now and it's far cheaper. You'll notice I skip Crystal and Brimstone Armor... if I had room I'd consider Crystal for more E/N def outside of Granite, although I've never had it on any Stone tank and never really missed it. Brimstone on the other hand is by far the most skippable power in the entire set being minor resistance to a very rare damage type. By the way, I'm a 60+ month vet so I have the City Traveler bonus and can choose a travel power without a prerequisite.

I'd switch around Tough/Boxing with Recall Friend/Teleport. Those are going to be some painfully slow 9 levels waiting until you can take TP. Also, I'd try to fit in Hasten before Granite as well.
In fact, if you slot your AoEs with +def bonuses, you can probably swap out one or two of the Granite slots for resistance set IOs, and save yourself having to pick up Tough. Granite is incredibly easy to cap for S/L
On my Stone guys, I usually go with 2 slots for my "extra" armours, with one LotG: +Rech, and one GotA: +Runspeed. If you can spare a slot from other places, puting in a second LotG isnt a bad call for the Regen bonus.
Your Resists arent capped, (at the very least, Smashing and Lethal should be capped), but your defences are probably close enough.
I usually go with the Winter's Gift: 20% slow resist in Recall Friend, and put an EndRed in TP, because it can be a bit of a hog if you're using it a lot.

Go perma-Granite for tanking on teams. Use a second build for tanking without Granite, or for leveling up. You get three builds now, so I don't see how having two builds for PvE could be a bad thing.

Here is a perma-Granite skeleton build I give out to anyone who needs guidance on Stone Armor. It has enough run speed without Rooted on. It has soft capped defenses to all but psionic. It has enough psionic defense that you can use a small or medium purple and not have to worry about psionic damage. This build is flexible enough to change for any secondary powerset, and is unfinished enough to customize for the bonuses you like the most. It was designed in I18, so you even get to pick 3 more powers to make it the way you want it.

About the only good thing I can say about that build is that you'll never run out of endurance. Other than that, it's decidedly subpar. Outside of Granite, you're about as tough as a middling scrapper; with Granite running, you're a below-average tank.

When planning a stone tank, your priorities should be, in order from highest to lowest:
1) Slot your powers for their intended use. This means damage in damage powers, protection in your armors, and ED-capped resistance and defense in Granite.
2) Look for runspeed bonuses.
3) Look for recharge bonuses.
4) Softcap smashing/lethal defense outside of Granite (if you're not going for a permagranite build).
5) Softcap S/L/E/N/F/C when running Granite.

Okay first off.

"Perma-granite?"

I take it you mean Granite with enough End-Red to not bleed your blue bar dry during regular combat?

Well, others have pointed out a few things to you already. So here's another point of reference, my Stone/Fire.

Nice, build. Not a SUPER damage-monster. But more than tough enough to AFK +2x8 mobs with little trouble.

And S/L/E/N/F/C capped plus.

hi, and thanks very much guys for the help.

it was my understanding that earth's embrace could be made perma, like dull pain. is this true. if so, i would guess it is only outside of granite.

It can be made perma, but it requires a great deal of recharge: 105% global recharge outside of Granite, 170% with Granite running.

Was there any reason you took Soul Tentacles? Unlocking the Villain epic pools is quite a bit of work for an AoE immobilize that Controllers can do better. You would be missing out on the regen and recovery from Physical Perfection.

You slotted Rock Armor like you plan to use it, but didn't slot your other armor powers. As a bare minimum, you need S/L and E/N defenses soft capped when out of Granite. It is difficult to slot a build for tanking well in Granite and tanking well out of Granite, which is why I suggest making two builds instead.

Pancea is a PvP set and may be very expensive. Check the price before you decide to use PvP sets.

Team Teleport does NOT work like Assemble the Team. It works like Team Fly. Only the people standing next to you will be teleported, and it only teleports them a short distance like you are using Teleport Self. Just be aware that it is a power you can drop if you want something else.

Getting perma Earth's Embrace is very expensive and probably not worth it. In Granite, you should have enough mitigation that nothing will hit you hard enough to make you want those extra HPs all the time. Earth's Embrace does make a nice big heal for the occasional emergency, like when fighting Bobcat in the Tin Mage TF if she happens to debuff your defenses a lot.

taking an aoe immob lets me slot enfeebled. which is great for s/l defense. one of the best sets you can get. didnt matter which one to me though. soul/mu/levi/mace.

so if you run granite all the time, you typically just stick with one slot in rock armor, for a lotg. i guess you have to respec out of it since levelling would be hard without it until 32. ok ill play around in mids a bit more and see what i can come up with.

i know panaceas are a lot, but the 7.5% recharge is so nice. if i cant use it, then ill probably go with 2 regen tissue (run speed bonus) and 3 whatever is cheap (triage maybe)

ok. try number 99. lol. tried for some more run speed bonuses. recharge is down a bit. took out the panacea since it'll be a month before i have the a-merits anyway. softcapped to s/l. overall looks pretty durable.

Gladiator's is also a PvP set. That 3% defense will cost you at least 2 billion, unless you farm 20 Hero merits. Granite is underslotted for resistance bonus in that build. Tough and Stone Skin need their enhancements swapped. Tough gives more resistance and should be enhanced more if you have to choose.

If you are soloing, you will want to be soft capped against S/L and Energy. Those are the most common damage types in the game. If you are teaming, you will almost always be in Granite. I strongly discourage you from trying to make a build that functions both in and out of Granite. Slots are wasted on the powers that aren't active. Make a build for tanking without Granite, and another for tanking with it. You can have three builds now and I don't see any reason to have more than one PvP build if that is what you do. The trainer allows you to switch builds every 15 minutes, which is shorter than most TF missions. As long as you know which one you need beforehand, you can perform well with two separate builds.

See my build posted above for an example of a Granite-only build. Making a build for leveling and tanking without Granite is simple enough. Take all of your armor skills except Granite. Take Tough and Weave. Take Maneuvers if you need the extra defense and don't want to get that defense from sets instead.

The inactive armors are good places to put things like five pieces of Red Fortune (5% recharge), a Luck of the Gambler 7.5%, or a Gift of the Ancients +runspeed. Stick a LotG, a GotA, and two Cytoskeleton Hami-Os in a defense power, and you've got a strong slotting in only four slots.

my build there would be running granite full time. i went for a fair bit of run speed in the inactives and also lotgs. swapping tough and stoneskin is a nice catch though.
