A Possible Shout Out

I was looking through CoH Tvtropes.org and the paragon wiki in-game references pages today and noticed that something wasn't mentioned that I thought was in there.

In the level 41-50 range, there are three particularly apparent enemy groups that seem to form a shout out:

Rikti: a race of psychic aliens who enjoy a telepathic network and use pylons to power their nearby equipment

Devouring Earth: a group of creatures that are created by the mutagenic properties of a sentient microorganism and which alters the very terrain of the world around it as it spreads.

Malta: a group of highly skilled humans with high technology gizmos and giant robots.

Soooo....

Protoss, Zerg and Terran?

Interesting thought. I never thought of it before but I could see it sort of fits. Though to be honest I think it's a little bit of a stretch.

The fact is, these are archetypes that are fairly common.

The technologically advanced race with technology far beyond our own.

The biologically advanced race that's not as much about technology but can breed like crazy and are very predatory, dangerous, attacks in swarms.

And then humans, one form or another in different stages of development.

Protoss, Zerg and Terrans could just as easily be Predators, Aliens and Humans in AvP.

Or Borg, Dominion and Humans in Star Trek.

It's not completely uncommon and my guess is that it's sheer coincidence. Things like Rikti, DE and Malta exist in comic books, which this came is inspired by, and it's likely the Devs just wanted to fill the niche that those groups fill.

Also, when looking at it more closely, the Rikti and DE don't match up very closely to Protoss and Zerg. Malta matches up to terrans only because it's humans and based off us.

Yeah I'd agree that the Rikti/DE/Malta relationship to the Protoss/Zerg/Terran groups is probably more of a "common sci-fi/comic book archetypes" coincidence than a direct shout out from this game to Starcraft. Still it's cool that we have connections to other great references like that.

If you're looking for more direct "shout outs" to other sources there are plenty to find.
For example the Seers in Praetoria are fairly obviously based (to me at least) on Agatha from Minority Report:

Loth 50 Fire/Rad Controller [1392 Badges] [300 non-AE Souvenirs]
Ryver 50 Ele Blaster [1392 Badges]
Silandra 50 Peacebringer [1138 Badges] [No Redside Badges]

More like Eldar, Tyranids and Imperium. Yes. I'm bringing up the fact that Blizzard ripped off Games Workshop

As I implied earlier the trope of these kinds of "three faction" relationships in stories is hardly new. Heck you could probably shoehorn the Elves/Orcs/Humans from LotR into that dynamic if you really wanted to.

I'd always thought of Zerg as shout outs to Aliens...

humans are, of course, humans

and then you have the Protoss and Predator...which I'm not sure of...though they did have the hand-blades of death thing going on

anyway, considering it is pretty much out right said that elves can talk to each other telepathically in the end of the LotR books, and the way that orcs and other Sauron/Morgoth followers corrupt the landscape, that seems correct.

actually, in one scene, if I remember right (the book isn't in front of me), Frodo, Gandalf, Elrond and Galadriel spend a long period of time in telepathic conversation when they encounter each other on the way north, towards the Shire and before breaking up to their individual paths...
