DM/FA Build Critique please!

Hi all,

I've been reading guides, playing in Mids, and I don't know if there's anything else I can do with this toon to tweak it. This build is lvl 35 on live, and it's going really well. I'm interested in seeing if I've made any glaring errors so far in this final build - is there something I should/shouldn't take, slots out of place, etc. Any advice at all is welcome! Since it's a /FA, I set it up for +Rchg and +Regen and tried to get as much defense as I could without gimping the build.

EDIT: Updated build in post #9, based on suggestions to that point. Comments on that build, or (even better) pros/cons with respect to this first build appreciated!!

Thanks in advance.

A few quick hits: I would slot Obliterations in Dark Consumption and Consume as well as Blazing Aura. And Soul Drain. If you can find the slots, 6 in each gets you huge +Def. Also, with Burn, makes you a PBAOE nightmare.
Where to get slots? Some candidates: Hasten, Stamina, RotP, Soul tentacles, One of the 3(?) KB Prot IOs, Weave. I opted out of Shadow Maul, and I took Air Sup instead (some mitigation) and stayed out of DN.

Sorry Salty. The "Click this link" link was working at home when I posted it this morning. I've edited the original post and put the data chunk at the end.

@galadiman: looking over your suggestions now, thanks!

Interesting! That keeps the +Rchg the same and ups the S/L Def by 5.4% to 21.8%, and also raises the Melee Def by 11.1% to 29.3%. The Recovery drops off a bit, as does the Regen, but with 2 +End powers the Recovery shouldn't be an issue. The Regen difference is only 1 HP/sec, which means it takes 14 extra sec to go from 0 - 100% health.

Thanks galadiman, there's something to consider here.

Thanks Nalrok. Believe it or not, I did just that after looking at it some more. It's my best +End power, so I thought it should be used that way. And I dropped it down to 5 slots since I didn't need the 6th and moved it over to Hover to get the 10% Regen bonus from the LotG set.

Do you see any other "issues" with the primary, since you've got such good familiarity with DM/ ?

Looking pretty good. The only thing I can see is that Soul Drain has absolutely no accuracy slotted in it. Are you getting a good chunk of Accuracy bonuses from your sets? I'm unable to access Mid's right now, but if I were to change anything I'd try to put an extra slot into Soul Drain and dump in an Acc IO.

Specifically, you can probably take the extra slot out of Hover and put it in Soul Drain for that very purpose. 4 points of -KB are enough to stop almost everything in the game with the exception of some edge cases, so you can keep the LOTG and drop the Karma.

Funny enough (and lucky for you) I have a 50 Fire/Fire Brute as well, so I'm pretty familiar with Fiery Aura as well as your primary. It all looks pretty good, I must say. Might I suggest removing the Stun IO's from RotP and frankenslotting two Damage/Recharge IO's from PBAoE sets? Why stun when you can kill?

With the build in the initial post, the Global bonuses to Acc bring the Acc up to 155.7 from 90, but that's changed a bit taking Galadiman's suggestions into account.

This is the other build that I came up with that focuses a bit more on Def without sacrificing much, based on Galadiman's suggestions above. I've also incorporated the changes to RotP you suggested in your latest post.

This is the build I'm most happy with "on paper", but I don't know how it will play, so I'd like some input on this as well. If this build is flawed compared to the first one I'd like to know why:

@galadiman: looking over your suggestions now, thanks!
No problem! I just wanted to give you some feedback but I couldn't view the build bonuses and such. Overall the build looks pretty good.

Comments as follow:

  • I concur with the comment about Soul Drain lacking accuracy. (You posted a new build as I was typing)
  • I would slot the -KB and +def IOs earlier in your career (I see you have one in hover).
  • I also noticed you didn't take Gloom. I would look at that power again. Its that good.
  • I figured you took Hover as a prerequisite for Fly, but IMO Combat Jumping is better than Hover especially since Burn (which comes at 28) is the only Immobilization protection you have.
Here is a build (on the expensive side) that I have been fiddling with ever since I rerolled this combo from a Scrapper as Brute. I'm not sure its the final version I'll go with, but it may give you some ideas.

Thanks Salty!

I went back and forth between Gloom and Soul Tentacles, and ultimately settled on ST based on the fact that 1) it's an AoE power, and 2) I get better set bonuses with it than I do from Gloom (ST has +Acc and +Rchg).

However, now that I'm looking at it again, with the increases to +Acc from galadiman's suggestions, I could drop ST and pick up Gloom, still maintain the same level of +Rchg, and only lose a bit of +Acc, but still have more than the original build.

I'll give it a look, thanks! And I'll look over your build and see if there's anything different that I can do. Expensive isn't going to work for me though, since playtime and Inf are limited.

I am no expert, but since I've been working on my own DM/FA build I will make some comments for whatever they may be worth.

Did you consider 4-slotting Kinetic Combats into your attacks for the 3.75% S/L bonuses?

Instead of Soul Tentacles, did you consider taking Gloom and 5-slotting it with Siphon Insight for the 3.75% S/L bonus?

I don't know if this would be within your budget, but Absolute Amazement is a relatively cheap purple set, and 5 slotting it into Rise of the Phoenix would give you a 10% recharge bonus.

I would like to hear from players with experience playing level 50 DM/FA, but in the abstract it seems to me that it may be overkill to heavily slot Dark Consumption and Consume, and that those slots could be better used elsewhere.

In my build I included a couple of Touch of the Nictus to increase the healing of Siphon Life. I could be wrong, but I think that the Regenerative Tissue proc would be better slotted in Health so that it continually operates.

@Nalrok: Yeah I've gone ahead and swapped Gloom for ST

@ Void: Thanks for the suggestions! I had forgotten about KC giving Defense bonuses, and I'll take a look into whether they'll fit in without killing my +Rchg (I've built this toon for +Rchg as much as possible).

If I can afford Abs. Amazement I'll definitely pick it up. I spent a good portion of my time over the last 4 days of tweaking this build thinking "man, if I could only afford a purple set" How do you define "cheap"? I have one toon that has 150 mil. Most of my other toons with any significant levels (yay alt-itis!!!) are only in the 10-20 mil range.

I already have a Numina's and a Miracle in Health, and since I use Siphon Life every chance it's up I figured it would do just as well there, but it can be moved

How exactly does the regen tissue proc work? I thought it was a "proc 120" meaning that once you activate the power it checks every 10 sec for an activation for the next 2 minutes. If that's how it works, then there's really no need to move it (although it couldn't hurt anything if I did).

I set up Consume the way I did to get the Acc/Rchg/Def set bonuses, on a suggestion from galadiman. DC is, as of now, 5-slotted with Efficacy Adapters, but I could drop one from there for RotP if I needed to do so for Abs. Amazement (and I'd have to scavenge for 2 other slots, but it would be worth it!).

Well if it's in an auto power, it'll be on constantly. If you use it in a "use" power, every time that power is successfully executed it'll activate for 2 minutes. If you use it before 2 minutes is up, it refreshes. Honestly I'd put that thing in another Auto power if you can, and put a Heal IO in Siphon Life. You'll get more out of it

I got DAMN lucky with drops one day (5 pieces of AA in less than six hours, holy balls) and respecced to my current build right then and there. 55% recharge is AMAZING for anyone using a "Dark X" powerset.

As of now, I have Siphon Life 4-slotted with Crushing Impacts and the 1 Regen proc. Are you saying move the slot with the Regen proc to Health (for instance) and make SL a 3-slot CI and 1-slot Heal IO? Or find another slot entirely to keep SL at 5 slots total and have Health increase from 2 to 3 slots?

I have never seen a purple IO as a drop. They're only available to level 50 toons, correct?

If you can find a new slot somehow, yes. If not, no worries, your build looks great as it is! Don't forget that some generic IO's can be dropped out of powers once you get the Alpha. Example: You could put a ToHit set back in Soul Drain if you slotted a Nerve Alpha.

Yeah, I was on a kill-all LGTF (with a really nasty head cold) and got 4 pieces of it on my main Nalrok Ath'Zim. I did a mission later that night to affirm my Villain alignment and a fifth piece dropped off of my Far Future Self. Thanks, Far Future Nalrok!

Thanks Nalrok. The only place I can conceivably think of taking that extra slot from would be Hasten, so I'll look into that. Good call about the Alpha Incarnate slotting!

@Salty: I took Fly due to thematic reasons, but I agree that CJ would work better in there.

Ok, so this is what I have as of now. I'm probably going to leave it as it is as far as slots go. I still need to look into slotting KCs for +Def and see what affect it has on the overall build.

Thanks to everyone who gave their input, it was a HUGE help! If anyone has anything else to add I'm all ears!

VelRahn, remember in Mids to always check the Sets & Bonuses Window for your build. In this case, it shows that you violated the Rule of 5 (i.e. won't get credit for): (i) one 5% recharge and (ii) two 1.125% HP bonuses.

Thanks Void. I knew about the violations, I need to tweak it further or just live with it. I haven't looked into slotting KCs for the +Def yet, so that may help the issue.

I'm still gonna have to disagree with slotting EA in Dark Consumption. With this level of recharge (and with the Alpha Rech/Heal uncommon slotted, woot! DOOO EET!), I Never, EVER have to worry about end. Even with one opponent, you get significant end recovery from DC, and Stamina keeps things rolling along. It's not an Awesome attack, but with fury, it's not insignificant.

If you were a tank, I'd say, sure, omit an attack in favor of a more 'defensive' choice, so to speak.

As a brute, however, I have to insist that you slot it as an attack. Or I will take away your Brute license. Srsly.

Ok, j/k.

Not really. I'm coming over right now to get your Brute card.

I'm a utility person, and that's why I suggested it. Currently, my DC can restore 75% of my endurance with just one enemy in range.

Well I do have 14 levels to go before this happens I could always do both on Test and run them for a month, then sell the set that I don't want.

And you can't have my Brute license. I just laminated it and everything to keep it from getting all bloody while I'm beating up the meatheads.

If your brute card isn't already bloody, you're not doing it right.
