Demon top DPS pet?
For the survivability, the way he gathers attention, and man when he gets out that friggin ice sword (LOOK OUT THAT DEMON HAS A SWORD!), I vote for the Demon Prince. I definitely make sure he has forge on when he doesn't have the living hellfire. Demon Prince holds bosses, slows spawns and kicks butts.

I've actually been wondering the same thing myself. I had naively assumed that the prince would be the best place for Hell on Earth since he's the highest level, etc. But looking at the numbers for the pet attacks, I just don't see it. Hellfire demon has more true attacks many of which have higher damage per cast cycle numbers than the Prince attacks. The Demon Prince does have a couple of heavy hitters, but as you said he seems to be more control focused than damage.

Hopefully someone who's run the numbers or even just empirical data based on experience will speak up.
I was in a duo. We are a level-paired set of demon summoners. My mastermind uses poison. My partner uses dark miasma. The mission was a tip mission. We had the difficulty at +2. He runs up the stairs in the classic warehouse dock map where the bosses usually hide. I flew straight up with hover to the top of the stairs.
My partner chews on a group in the corner while I unwillingly grabbed the aggro of the TWO bosses, one was a carnie master illusionist and the other some named dufus. I got the noxious gas on the demon prince, but within seconds all pets were down except the demon prince with noxious gas and hell on earth. My mastermind had basically thrown everything and was terribly low on endurance, but I kept tossing alkaloid on the demon prince while he solo'd the two bosses.
While I know there is a lot of juice in noxious gas, from that experience I know in the hairy fights you want hell on earth on the pet that does the damage and the pet that will last the longest. There is a buff from hell on earth for damage, but the extra to-hit isn't shabby. The tiny hellfires do help take some aggro off the pet you cast it on, too. On my thermal demon summoner, if I have my Demon Prince buffed with Forge, I have no trouble casting Hell on Earth on my Hellfire Gargoyle.
I don't know the exact numbers either, but when the Demon Prince gets out his Greater Ice Sword attack, LOOK OUT! It's demon butt kicking time!

My experience on my DS/Pain is that the Hellfire Gargoyle wins for top DPS. It has a completely fluid chain of attacks-- well, as fluid as a pet can be-- and many of the Gargoyle's attacks have superior DPA relative to the Demon Prince.
AoE damage isn't even close. Hellfire Burst does less damage than Frozen Aura, but it has a 5' larger radius and almost always hits more foes. The Hellfire Gargoyle also has access to a damage aura and Breath of Hellfire for additional AoE damage.
I place perma-Pain Bringer on my Gargoyle, while the Demon Prince gets a periodic burst from Hell on Earth.
I've been playing my DS/Therm recently and I am a little unsure which is my top DPS pet. The intuitive answer is the demon prince, but he seems to have an extremely control heavy set. That combined with the fact that the hellfire gargoyle has a damage aura makes me wonder which is tops.
I am just trying to prioritize for Forge when I'm running in a duo and for which should get Hell on Earth stacked on top of forge.
