Soloing, Mezzing, and Dying
Who are you fighting? Are you taking down or neutralizing mezzers first? Are you staying at range where melee mezzers have a harder time getting to you? Do you have Combat Jumping to keep from being Immobilized?
I play "squishes" solo, and good tactics are the best way to avoid mezzing. And of course, a healthy amount of Break Frees and Lucks.

I have CJ and Acro. Anything that drops the Rad Infection is the killer. Solo isn't the problem. The problem is that there seems to be no happy zone for spawn sizes between boring easy and constant mez death. Maybe it's mostly a Rad/Rad thing, with all the AOE debuffs and attacks. Having an entire spawn go from 5% to 50% is painful (though normally the pain is brief).
A lot of it depends on the enemy group you're fighting. Some enemy groups have no mezzes, some have a few mez type people and if you identify them and take them out first there's no problem, while others have every single enemy trying to mez you and there's nothing reliable you can do about it.
Malta and knives of artemis fit into that last category. Try to avoid them when you're soloing.
If you are soloing, pick your mobs. Even my scrapper did this as I just preferred not having to deal with certain mobs.
Echoing the others that it really depends on the enemy. Some are just going to be more rough than others. Also, are you settings too high?
I currently have 4 defs at 50 (emp, dark, cold, kin) and they were vastly different to me when soloing. I agree that other toons can solo better, but when was the last time you heard a team say they needed more scrappers or stalkers or tanks?
A Rad/Rad shouldn't have a lot of issues once your build settles. Cosmic Burst to stun and attack, AM to resist the mezzes and end drains, debuffs to use against the bosses/EB's/AV's.
Sure you won't be soloing large spawns like a scrapper, but for running tips you should be fine.

As said above, Rad does come with some good tools already ...
For my Kin/Psy, it was excruciating fighting some groups until the EPP, where I could grab Mass Hypnosis and Dominate. A group sleep and two mezzes (Dominate and Scramble Thoughts) finally tipped the balance, especially given that Dominate works on pretty much anything.
TLDR version: choose a helpful EPP.
Why Blasters? Empathy Sucks.
So, you want to be Mental?
What the hell? Let's buff defenders.
Tactics are for those who do not have a big enough hammer. Wisdom is knowing how big your hammer is.
Rad and Dark Miasma both have that "house of cards" feel, with your To Hit debuff toggle as the keystone.
One mezz turns that off, which can lead to chain mez or death as everyone can now hit you.
Carry break frees. Maybe use one pre-emptivcely when you say tackle a Rikti Mesmersist boss, so he cant mezz you until you get him stunned.
Mez the mezzers first.
Maybe invest in some stealth (even a Stealth IO in one of the prestige sprints) so you start a fight on your terms.
Build up some ranged Defence to go with your -To Hit bonuses. This affects enemies outside the radiation infection core and soen't drop if you get mezzed or your toggles drop.
These will all reduce the chance of you getting taken down, but it can still happen.
Do these 3 have to go together? I know, not all AT's are created equal, and we rock in teams. But my Rad/Rad at level 40 has gotten really frustrated with trying to solo. I picked up Choking Cloud, but it really hasn't helped. One mez gets through and it's game over. Even difficulty levels that are boring find me dying from mezzes. Anyone found a happy place between bored and frequent mez deaths? Or should I just get to 50 as quickly as possible during 2xp weekend?
