(New?) Update Idea - MUSIC Overhaul!

As I was playing a new Psi assault dominator, I could not help but be distracted by what was marring an otherwise great power, Telekinetic Thrust... and that happened to be the poor quality sound effect it uses, practically to the point of distortion.

And so, I thought of this post and a much-needed bump. As it stands, I would be surprised if sound and music comprise 1% of any new content's development time.

I actually played this when we started. Surprisingly (last night) we beat him in time for the song to end.

Good music can get your heart pounding, your adrenaline flowing and your mind racing. Playing this while tanking Recluse really amped up how "in to it" I was. While my allies were taking down the towers, here I was clashing face-to-face with the king of Villains, the Lord of Arachnos, fist meeting steel, spider claw meeting my indestructible forearm, electricity meeting Well energy, Bane Spiders surrounding me and fueling my Invincibility, all while I pop Unstoppable and throw everything I have at Recluse until the whole team surrounded him and smashed him to the ground!

.... case in point.

Exactly. I always try and be in range of the final fortress in the ITF, because the cutscene is simply a hundred times better when actually set to the music. Why the music is tied to location at all and not the cutscene trigger is a mystery to me in the first place.

There's been two instances recently, one on the ITF and one on the LGTF, where I've taken to bootin up Ride of the Valkyries and listening to that, simply because the team is a literal embodiment of the Apocalypse

Please, Devs, re-hire the guys who did the GR music and add it to more of the game!

Edit: Should try playing something like this next LRSF in the final battle. Something to symbolise the crushing of hope and freedom beneath our armoured boots
Much like Lucas crushes all those with common sense and who loved the original trilogy...money-monger >_>

Good idea, I turned the music off 2 years ago or something. The GR char creator song was kinda neat though.

Music is a VERY powerful tool in creating atmosphere, emotion and actually making your players CARE about what is taking place before them. And I'm not talking about just action music that gets your heart racing, I mean mood music of all kinds, from sad tunes to punctuate a tragedy or a terrible situation, to soothing melodic tunes to describe the beauty of a scenic location, to mysterious, strange music that brings home just how alien and incomprehensible a location is.

I know artists, painters, sculptors and other people of the visual arts will often play mood music as they work to help them get into the right state of mind and retain it as they work, and I know that I will often find inspiration for an entire story just from the basic emotion a piece of music brings. If you can harness that into your game and actually direct it to match and emphasise events, you can create a much stronger experience than your typical MMO gameplay video you'll find on YouTube where a character repeatedly swings a sword at the same five enemies for a while to the sound of clicking keys and cooling fans. There are few better ways to make a game look and feel boring.

I have always thought that this game's music is one of the weakest things about it. When they got Jason Graves to do the music for Going Rogue I was very happy with the decision. I want more epic music like that.

Hell, we have talent in our community with people like OminousVoice. Listen to how incredibly well this song would fit in the game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=naEXR8wLdWs

After hearing it I immediately used CoHSplasher to make that song play on the Villain login/character select screen. Even the Hero version too. It just makes my experience That. Much. Better.

I wish each zone had it's own persistent music, instead of small areas that have a one-off track. It would really give each of them more character - especially the Hero side zones which are severely lacking it.

I strongly believe that the game could improve with its music and how it chooses to present it.

I still play with the music on, even after going on four years. Some zones, I just really enjoy the music (especially the Praetoria stuff, but still some original zones). What really surprised me, though, was the cutscene music from Adair's arc. When I first heard it, I was amazed - it gave it a whole new level of awesome.

Then you've got the 'GET THE HELL OUT OF THE BUILDING' music from the end of Leonard's arc, which also totally rocks...

Add another vote to getting OminousVoice to do music for the game...

... failing that, I'd love to hear what Chance Thomas can do with COH.

Having persistent music play throughout an entire zone would be a very good thing. It could give the zones a LOT more flavour. The one you linked to, for instance, sounds like something that would be really appropriate for Grandville (obviously) or Boomtown, or, hell, even something like Sharkhead Island.

Right now, a zone's "theme" is so poorly delivered and so hard to feel that it's like someone sitting down to explain the plot synopsis of a great movie. You just can't get the same experience. Adding music would transform this from an explanation to an actual first-hand experience.

To be honest, City of Heroes may have a lot of good things going for it, but presentation has never been one of them.

I've had the in-game must off for over 6 years. I turned it on the other day just to see what I was missing and turned it off again after 30 minutes or so. For me it's actually immersion breaking.

I would like an option where we can turn on just the music for Pocket D and the Praetorian dance area and the Getto Blaster, and keep the primary in-game "zone" music off.

I've been playing THAT other MMO with a friend recently, and they always do great soundtracks for their expansions. In fact, the theme of "Wrath of the Lich King" was cued up on my mp3 player, and used as part of the soundtrack to my first ride into Manhattan this past fall, no word of a lie.

In City of Heroes, I only bother with the game music in Preatoria, because it's actually pretty good. Otherwise, I turn the sound off and don't bother. Most of the in-game music is stale and boring, IMHO.

I don't bother with the game music anywhere in this game because there's no option to leave it on JUST in Praetoria. There's one setting for music volume, and to listen to some but not all music, I have to fiddle with options, which isn't going to happen. Not on a regular basis.

In order for me to turn music back on, it has to not suck anywhere in the game, so I have no places where I feel I have to turn it off.
