I'm finally nearing the completion of my Kat/SR and felt it was time to start working on a good AOE toon.

I based the majority of this build off of Fury Flachette's thread on Elec and FM/SD builds for any budget. This is based off of the moderate build.

I definitely feel this build could be improved upon. After reading through the forums a bit, it seems that the general consensus on Melt Armor is that it's worthless. I kept it in the build just so I could get the Melee and AOE bonus from the Shield Breaker set.

I didn't really want Hover...I just had an extra power to choose. Also, I didn't know what to do with One With The Shield so I just threw that Perf Shifter Proc in there because. It seems most /SD's that I've seen skip OWTS anyways.

Any suggestions????

This isn't a good build to finish on, as the recovery isn't too great, but it's a decent model with the given attack chain and budget in mind. Cardiac would be a potentially good choice for helping fix the end issue; otherwise, moar recharge!
It also carries a set of glad nets, which aren't *too* expensive... but they're not really cheap. It has enough recharge to rock incinerate->scorch->cremate->scorch while hasten is up. While it's down, you'll have to throw a fire blast in as well.
Just under 90% DDR, to help prevent that cascade failure we all see with swords and guns. You'll be pretty much mez proof, especially with OwtS to throw out in tougher situations (Which is also probably the best place to slot your steadfast, so you don't have to waste a slot anywhere else).
I noticed you use SS instead of SJ in your build. As far as slotting, it doesn't matter. Either one could replace the other with some minor power rearrangements. I'd definitely keep that Winter's Gift in there, though. 20% rech resistance goes a long way (getting you up to 50%).
It looks like, with that chain, BU would be up for every 6th repeat of the chain, and it should last through two full cycles at well.

I noticed that you both switched Fire Sword to Scorch. Is this just for attack chain purposes?

I would think so, didn't look at the builds to close. With Scorch you can run Incinerate>Scorch>Cremate>Scorch. It is a good attack chain and with a fire/shield it can get up to 230 DPS. It might not be as good as Incinerate>Cremate>Fire Sword but it should take less recharge.

The more I read up on FM/SD the more that it sounds like it's great for ST damage even though everyone lists it as one of the better all-around AOE Scrappers.

Of course, the idea of saturated AAO combined with FSC sounds really fun.

Is the combo or FSC and SC really worth the investment for AOE damage compared to say an Elec/SD for an all-around AOE Scrapper?

Yes.

FM/SD will never wipe spawns as fast as Elm/SD, but FM/SD will take down hard targets in a way that Elm/SD can not.

Elm/SD is the AoE heavy build, FM/SD is the better all around build.

FM/SD is capable of top end ST DPS, and impressive AoE capabilities.

Add in Ball Lightning or Fireball and the AoE is pretty good while having great ST damage.

When you're not able to reach the cap for DDR, what is considered "acceptable?"

The last build that I posted is sitting at 52.9% right now.

...so I need to either get more recharge to double stack or make more money so I can afford better stuff...got it.

Would it be a huge mistake to pull a couple of those Miracles out of Health so I can add the slots to Hasten?

Of course if I do that, end sustainablitity is going to get even more rough...

In a way, there's nothing really special about Fire/Shield for AoE that wouldn't also be true of, say, Broad Sword/Shield. Basically, you combine a PBAoE from your primary with Shield Charge and then take the Fire (or Mu, right?) epic for Fire Ball or whatever the Mu one is. Buff it all with saturated Against All Odds, and poof, a primary with mediocre AoE becomes an AoE powerhouse. But yeah, put it all together, and it sure works.

You're not kidding!

I did a quick test respec last night and at least got the powers I wanted just to see them in action. I didn't know what I was doing at all when I originally leveled him and he is full of Level 50 SO's.

I was really impressed! Of course, my end recovery sucks right now but this was just a test. I've been a /WP and /SR addict for so long...now /SD is creeping into everything I wanna build!

...next: Damage Auras!

On a more serious note, unfortunately the amount of def debuffs you will face when you actually need DDR to survive (i.e. massed blade weapons, gunfire, etc.) is often so overwhelming that 50% DDR simply will not be enough to keep you alive.

In that case, would it be wise to remove two of my Miracle's from Health so I can add two more slots to Hasten...that way I can have AD up more often? As I stated earlier, my main concern with that is added end drain from attacking more often.

I could just take one of those and maybe the multi-strike out of FSC...?

This build is making me crazy...but it's fun!

How's this for no HO's, PVP's or Purples?

This toon will be used for regular team play, some TF's here and there and farming. No AV's, Pylon or anything.

The only thing that really worries me so far is the end recovery/end drain. I thought about dropping Blaze Mastery for Body Mastery but I'd really like to have a Scrapper w/out Body Mastery for a change and I'm loving Fireball so far.

With your slotting of True Grit you are losing 47 HP, and you gain is 0.05 endurance per second (from the miracles, not including the proc which would get moved to health) - that's a bad trade off imo.

Go with 3 Numi Pieces (Heal, Heal/End, Heal/Rech) and just slot the 3 procs (Numi, Miracle, Regen Tissue) into Health.

Loss:
  • 0.5 HP/s
  • 0.05 E/s
Gain:
  • 47 HP
(*double check my numbers just in case, pretty sure that's accurate)

Outside of going Cardiac or swapping to Body APP, there's not much you can do about it due to running maneuvers.

Since you're not doing things like pylons/AVs etc, just carry a column of blues as well as a crafted recovery serum on your hotbar.

This is what I just came up with....sure it could stand a tweak here and there, but it's softcapped and over 2k HP, with decent +Rech, and no Maneuvers. I would go for the Spiritual Radial Boost with this to fill the cap in +Reg in Health and for the +Rech to keep Hasten/AD up well over 100% ED.

Feedback is welcome! I may respec my budget Fire/SD at some point.
