Looking for help with a Dark/Dark build

I just resubed after not playing for over a year. With all the changes to the game, I'm clueless on a build for my lvl 50 Dark/Dark Defender. I used to play mainly as a debuffer and slowing/holding mobs down, and a back up healer. For instance I remember using the heal, tentacles, the fear, and tar patch none stop. I don't plan on PvPing, and I generally play casually. Any suggestions on an optimized build on the cheap, or suggestions how to maximize the sets?

Thanks ahead of time.

Influence should not be your biggest concern when planning a build. If you have Going Rogue, you can earn Hero Merits for reaffirming your alignment as a hero. You can then spend those to buy any invention in the game. Browse the market and figure out what would be the best way to earn INF per Hero Merit spent. Luck of the Gambler: Global Recharges are usually a safe investment, but I have read about someone making more per merit by doing the random rolls over 30 days.

Generally speaking, you want to go for either positional defense (melee, ranged, area) or recharge bonuses. For example, for your blasts you either want to use six thunderstrike enhancements or five decimations, with the sixth slot possibly being the damage proc from cloud senses. If a power doesn't have any options for good set bonuses (like tar patch) then frankenslotting for enhancement values is best. For example: tempered readiness end/rech/slow, pacing of the turtle end/rech/slow, and a common recharge IO will give tar patch solid endurance and slow slotting while getting recharge pretty close to the maximum.

If you can say what pools you're interested in taking, or what powers you're currently using, I can put a build together for you.

Any suggestions for this?

Regarding the above build:
(1) Gladiator's Armor +3% Def is insanely expensive. If you really have this, auction it on the Market forum for over 2 billion.
(2) See Darkity's guide:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=127276
(3) Global recharge is important. At a minimum, pick up Hasten.
(4) Since you've been away for a year, you might not be aware that Blessing of the Zephyr was nerfed. So consider whether you still want it given its current stats.
(5) If you mostly play in teams, do you really find much use for Moonbeam (the snipe)?
(6) You mentioned your recollection that you used Tar Patch frequently. You might want to slot it for recharge.
(7) My impression from the forums is that most people don't bother to slot up Health except to hold procs.

Obtaining 45% defense will grant you a lot more mitigation than trying to stack resistance on a Defender. The resistance cap is 75% for Defenders. Also, it only mitigates the damage type that it says. So, if an attack does smashing and cold damage, all of the cold damage will get through while you take 25% of the smashing damage. If you could get 45% defense in S/L and ranged, you would be much better off. Almost all melee attacks have a S/L damage component to them which means you will mitigate the non-S/L damage too. Basically, only a few AoE and auto-hit powers will get through your defense while you take only 10% damage from everything else, compared to the 25% with resistance.

If you have four slots in a hold, put Basilisk's Gaze in it for the recharge bonus. Four slots in a pet power will hold either of the pet recharge sets for more recharge bonus.

Hover is a nice defensive power. Don't be afraid to slot it and use it as such when stacking defense.

It would be better to slot Shadow Fall for defense. Kismet is not a good set to use when slotting for defense.

Soft-capped S/L defense is good.

The one pet that needs to be slotted better is Dark Servant. Dark miasma is heavy on -tohit, and fluffy is the heaviest. Personally, I go six slotted dampened spirits or dark watcher's despair.

Don't slot more than the default slot in hover (or fly). With a fly speed enhancement in swift, and fly in hover and fly you are pretty much at the fly speed cap now. Hover's base defense is 2.5% which I don't consider much. Maneuver's base defense is 3.5%.

Having some defense in shadow fall is good. The power needs some endurance reduction slotting. Since there are few powers with resistance to psionic damage, I like to slot for resistance in shadow fall before defense. Also, I am banking on my tohit debuff to reduce my need for defense. Working the kismet +accuracy into the build is nice.

Speaking of tohit debuff, fearsome stare can really use tohit debuff sets before going the fear route. Late in the build after the other powers get slotted up for -tohit, switching to a Glimpse of the Abyss set is nice, too.

Howling Twilight and Tar Patch could both use some recharge reduction love. Getting extra defense is good, but with needs for accuracy and recharge, I would go leadership for maneuvers and tactics and add in hasten for the longer recharging dark miasma goodness.

Triumphant Defenders Forever
Psylenz FF/Psi, ArticQuark Storm/Rad, Symon BarSisyphus Bots/psn, Max VanSydow Thugs/Dk, Cyclone Symon Bots/stm, Blue Loki Ice/Cd, Widow 46526
HelinCarnate:OMG it is so terrible. I have the option to take 3 more powers but no additional slots. Boo F'ing hoo.

Personally, I disagree with this, Dark Servant needs the accuracy iirc and Siphon Insight 5 set is a very heavy chunk of S/L defense, and decent melee. Also AoE defense if one desired a 6th slot.

Below is my current build. I wanted to soft cap ranged def with reasonable numbers for the others because she does jump in melee for the soul mastery.

Ranged def 45%, recharge 140% with hasten. So far I'm very happy with her and was able to solo an Arachnos mission at x8. She seems very solid.

It would be easy to make her a bit less expensive by losing some othe LotG combo's and using def IOs instead. I did it for the bonuses. The HO could go too; I had it in the base so I used it.

I hope it gives you a few ideas.

Here's my data chunk.

Just recently rebuilt this guy, nothing too terribly expensive on teh build except the 5 lotg's. A few of the cheaper purple sets in, and 3 slighty expensive items with the apocs in dark blast.

You'll notice the defense and resistance numbers are not all that impressive when looked at by themself, but part of the beuty of dar/dark is all the -tohit, which is equivalent to adding to your effective defense. Combined, I simply cannot be touched even in a ful 8 man spawn. The combination of anchoring darkest night in the middle, then tarpatch, and spamming tents, blast and gloom means their to-hit is floored.

The other *trick* to my build is the combo of a single slotted oppressive gloom and spamming of howling twilight. Start off with laying down a darkest night anchor in the middle of the mob, quickly drop tar patch under them, run in let oppressive gloom start to work, then bam with howling twilight, let fluffy start doing his thing, then back up a tad to set up your tent cone, and watch them all fall down.

The other thing is the -def, so you dont have to elevate your acc or tohit numbers to astronomical levels to hit even +4 mobs, so I was able to devote a lil more space to damage, which dark can sometimes be sorely lacking in.

So, not having to concentrate too heavily on maxing my def, because of all the -tohit me fluffy and I be throwin around, nor on too much accuracy to be able to take on higher level mobs cuz of all the -def, I was able to concentrate on throwing in a lil bit of dmg, some recharge, maximize recovery and a lil regen, and threw in a lil bit of resistance.

The one thing I would go back and look at how to improve would be to somehow stop getting mezzed. The only thing that does it are the typical things like high level malta or knives, or illusionist, but when you get stunned held or whatever and darkest night and oppressive gloom drop, it usually spells disaster. I just carry a few breakfrees with me at all times and that works fine, but if I werent so lazy or cheap, I'd probably look for a way to improve that.

The one power I rarely use but is in the build is life drain. I tried slotting for damage, procs, heals, all sorts of things and could never find an ideal slotting for making the power useful compared to everything else in the build, so again, if I went back and revisited a respec, I might drop that, or move the slots at the very least, though I really dont know which power I would take in its stead, or where I would put the slots.

Hope this helps! And I certainly dont mind anyone's thoughts on this build if they care to offer them. Nor would I mind showing in person what it can do. It *farms* quite nicely on both blue and red, set on insane difficultiues.

I threw this together for another example. it is based off the same plan I use for my 3d corr (same powers different mods) The highlights of this build include capped range, and 30ish to everything, with darkest night running nothing has a very good shot at you.

Above all else though, this build is dirt cheap compared to some others while still maintaining excellent performance. (some of the higher priced enh can be substituted for commons, such as the def/res sets).
