Mind/Psi or Mind/Energy?

So I'm back after a long hiatus, and glad to see Dominators finally got some much needed love!

I'm new to them, but I'm looking at Mind Control. Originally I thought of going with Psi Assault to stick with the theme, but after looking at the goodies in Energy Assault (Power Boost) I'm torn.

What kind of experiences have people had? Is Power Boost necessary for an optimized Mind Control Dom? Will I miss having any good AOE's, even if my ST damage is great? (Whirling Hands doesn't count whatsoever, sorry)

Is the added AoE of Psi Assault worth it? How is the ST damage? Will Psi resist enemies be the bane of my existence? I have no experience with Drain Psyche... is it all that AND a bag of chips? Does it make up for not having Power Boost?

Finally, I'm not looking at investing a crapload of INF into the character at the moment. Maybe later, but right now my monies are being showered on my main. However, if I enjoy the character enough it's certainly something to think about in the future.

Opinions welcome! Thanks in advance for the help.

I just came back a couple weeks ago and revamped my mind/psi. He's got 190% recharge with hasten and I typically use him to sleep AVs in various TF/SFs. /Psi isn't as epic as it used to be. I've found myself not really using Psi Shockwave as much. AOE for me is Terrorize, Psi Scream, and Psi Tornado. Psi resistant enemies are a pain but you can take Lift and TK Thrust to offset this with some smashing damage.

Drain Psyche is all that and a bag of chips, imo. slot it for acc/heal/rech and you'll get crazy high regen and capped recovery off of 7-10 foes. All in all, I'd say that what mind/psi lacks in damage it makes up with the debuff in Drain Psyche and it's various control options on teams.

SG: Guadians of Paragon - VG: Paragon's Darkness
The Usual Suspects: Fimboolvetr (Icer Tank), Tsukiyomi (Mind/Psi/Ice Dom), Smiting Dragon (Dm/Sr Scrap), Widow Mortis (NW)
Up and Comers: Ameterasu (Km/Reg Scrap), Arrhymian (Elec/Nin Stalk), TDMKII (Bot/Traps MM)

Both combos are good. Energy does have solo synergy; you can Sleep entire spawns easily early on with Mass Hypnosis, and kill them one by one.

On the other hand...yes, Drain Psyche IS that good.

Hmmm, ok. Thanks for the tips!

Now my question is... which is more valuable when dealing with AV's?
The massive -regen and -recovery debuff from Drain Psyche...?
Or the control buff from Power Boost?

power boost would be more helpful if you aren't planning on going perma-dom (like a +def build or something that doesn't revolve around +rech bonuses). if you are going for the higher recharge rates like i did, drain psyche all the way. my mesmerize, dominate, and confuse all recharge in around 2.5 seconds so i'd rather have the regen debuff to help my damage against AVs. I haven't gotten around to attempting to solo any yet, but i know i can keep them perma confused

Especially since slotting healing enhancers increases the -regen aspect of the power. Which can be pretty useful in the absence of access to strong -res while solo.

Dr. Todt's theme.

Mind/Psi is a jack of all trades with high control and incredible longevity. Since Drain psyche puts you abouve a /regen scrapper when target capped, in worst of situations it starts to really shine. While many don't like the fact that psy shockwave is no longer the power that makes the set. it's often neglected that psy scream got a major buff. /Psi has some very reasonable AoE.

For AV's my Mind/Psi doesn't need powerboost to help, though I can see where it would be handy. Toggling on Telekenisis gives a steady 2-3 mag hold, then dominate is up every few seconds for even more. Holding AV's/heroes that don't have unstoppable is pretty simple. In this case, the -regen is where it shines, shortening the fight pretty significantly...-857% permanently throughout the fight, provided there's not a miss.

The downside is that your single taget damage is nominal, and there's not the powerboost cushion for when you let things slide and the AV gets loose.

Mind/energy is a lot more single target, with more soft controls. Powerboost gives you extra duration so you can be less vigilant with your mez. /Energy is also a different damage type, so things with defense/resistance to psy won't be a headache.

For me? Both are powerful solo. If you're on your game, the Mind/Psi get better with a lot of investment. Mind/Energy on the other handy is better on SO's, and makes straight up control more player-friendly.
