Old nrg/nrg

Obscure Blade

Posted

Hey folks,

I'm a player from a long ways back returning. My first 50 was an nrg/nrg blaster and he was loads of fun, so I feel a bit obligated to do my first incarnate run with him. Anybody got a good idea on a solid build seeing as Fitness is now inherent? I never really did much with IOs. Might be willing to integrate those once I get a little influence. Much appreciated.

I am just bringing up a baby Energy/Energy Blaster myself. I'm not a Blaster expert, so I have lots of questions myself, and not much in the way of answers for you.

My current hope is to scrounge enough slots to be able to generalize -- I like hover-blasting from on high AND I like blapping in melee AND I'd like to have some single-target and some area damage for teaming. What I'm not especially trying for is a perma-Hasten build or a defense build.

I really don't know if I'll be able to do it all, but I'd like to have Boost Range and several long-range single-target attacks (including the snipe), three AoEs (Energy Torrent, Explosive Blast and Repulsion Bomb) and limited Blapping ability (at least Power Thrust, Bone Smasher and Total Focus, and maybe also Stun). Oh, and the nuke.

That's a lot of crud to six-slot, especially if Boost Range, Hasten, and maybe Temp Invulnerability are also using 3-4 slots each. I haven't worked it up in Mid's yet. I may have to give up one of the three roles (high-altitude hover blasting, AoE saturation for teams, and blapping) but I am still hoping to be able to squeeze it all in. We'll see.

Question for the general readership: how useful is Power Boost to Energy/Energy? I feel like (especially since I am foregoing defense) it doesn't add much, just to the Medicine Pool heal and to my stuns, really (knockback too, but distance isn't much of an addition). Can I skip it, or is it the bees' knees for some reason?

It's not a cheap build but it's not horribly expensive (no LotGs or recovery uniques, for instance) and will give you a nice amount of ranged defense which makes a big difference for Blasters, as well as decent recharge. The Obliteration set in Nova is the only really expensive one, and that can easily be replaced by SOs or cheap sets. I included Power Boost for bosses... it only enhances Aid Self and the stuns (it doesn't work on KB any more) but it makes Total Focus stun longer so you can stack Stun with it to stop a boss for a while. You can replace it with Conserve Power if needed, though I don't find Blasters to usually need more than Stamina for endurance management unless they're high-recharge AoE builds or running extra toggles.

As far as Incarnate abilities go, the Spiritual tree would really help since the AoEs aren't near the ED cap on recharge. They'll be up once a fight or more, but more is better and it will also help the blasts.

Looks like you built mainly for +damage, +HP and regen, and +recovery. I'm not a big fan of going for +damage personally simply because it only boosts your base damage value... 17% +damage is only going to actually increase your DPS by 9% or so. That's not bad in and of itself, but being held or dead because you lack much defense is going to cut into your DPS a lot more than those +damage bonuses gave. Likewise regen isn't too useful in combat at the levels a Blaster gets (unless /Mental) and using Aid Self after a fight negates the need for regen then.

It's just my opinion, but in general I consider defense and recharge the keys to a Blaster build (or just lots of recharge and some recovery for a team build). +HP is nice, but regen is only really useful if you are skipping Aid Self and +damage is generally not going to boost your DPS as much as more recharge would. You have several sets that would give you more recharge if you added another piece, and some sets like Devastation that could probably be replaced with a set that gives defense or recharge. Finally, Hoarfrost is largely a waste since the Blaster HP cap is only around 33% above their base... you can be capped on HP with just 13% from set bonuses if you have all the +HP accolades.

Looking at your extremely high accuracy I have to wonder, was this build made for +4s (like the Apex TF)? If that's the case then the extra HP and damage may well be better than defense since you need a lot of it to really protect you from +4s. If it's a general build I'd suggest losing a bit of global regen, accuracy and damage and grabbing more recharge and ranged defense. That's just how I'd do it though.

Cascade, level 50 Blaster (NRG/NRG since before it was cool)
Mechmeister, level 50 Bots / Traps MM
FAR too many non-50 alts to name

Actually no, they removed the ability for Power Boost to affect Knockback quite some time ago. Yet another PvP related nerf as I recall; it was the same Issue they nerfed Acrobatics.
