Request for Advice

This isn't something I normally do, however, I'm in uncharted territory here in two ways. I've not played tanks before (and am probably not playing it right) and I've done basically nothing with IO's (especially sets).

I know Justice has some very knowledgeable players (especially with regard to Tanks and IO's) so I'm asking my fellow Justice players for build advice. I'm currently at 36 and don't (as a rule) team. However, I'm considering changing that a bit which is why I'm looking to maximize the effectiveness of my Tank.

I'm not looking for the most expensive build, just an effective one. So far, the only set IO's I've slotted are some that dropped as I was playing. There are a few common IO's slotted as well, and that's also from slotting what had dropped.

Anyhow, here's the current planned build with slots and IO's as placed currently at Lvl 36.

Hi, Texas Justice. I wish I could help you with tanker builds, but I'm not that knowledgeable yet. I would recommend though also looking or posting to the Tanker AT forum. I believe there are several people who are brilliant in such matters across all forums. Just a thought. Enjoy the bash!

Looks pretty much fine for SOs/Commons. Might be a bit painful pre-Rage as far as accuracy goes. I'm not sure what to say without delving into lots of sets and it looks like you're avoiding that?

If you do get any more involved than that, you'll want to make sure you have a datalink or export chunk included in the build/post, so that others can continue/modify/read it easier.

Tired of fighting the forums to get the Datalink to work so we'll try this a different way:

I'm not a tanker build expert by any means but I would replace either the EndRed or the Recharge in the attacks with 1 accuracy.

If you haven't looked at the two guides by Call Me Awesome concerning Invulnerable tanks I suggest you do so. They are Invulnerability, the first 20 levels and Invulnerability and the Defensive Soft cap.

As far as your attacks. Personally I would slot haymaker and foot stomp with 1 Acc, 2 dmg, 2 end redux and one recharge. You're getting quite a bit of recharge with hasten as it is. Secondly I'd slot 1 acc in all your other attacks(replacing one dmg), especially for times when you're fighting foes with -acc/-to hit debuffs.

On my Inv tank I never picked up Resist Energy or Resist Elements and haven't missed them. I may pick them back up with the i19 respec but I'll only single slot them. I'm also not a fan of having two travel powers in a set, especially when you can purchase the jet pack in the Shadow Shard, or temp travel powers from WW. Ninja run+sprint makes a "pseudo" Super Speed. I'd drop either SS or SJ and find something else for it.

As for what I'd replace Res En, Res Nrg and One of the travel powers with? Yeah, I'd go fighting and pick up boxing, tough and weave. Tough would get your s/l resists to over 90% and Weave would get a lot of your defenses up to 27% or more with one in range of Invince.

I'd also grab a couple of IOs to bolster things slightly. The Steadfast Unique and a Performance shifter +end proc. The steadfast would go into RPD and the Proc into Phys. Perfection.

Again, these are things that I would do, not necessary things that you'll want to do. Take a look and see if this works for you. I didn't rebuild your Mids from scratch but just moved things around a bit. If you want to take it further into an IO set build this can be made quite a bit tougher.

And the Changed Build.

Hi TJ,

I agree with Rangle, read Call_Me_Awesome's guides they're very enlightening. And, I agree with Rangle for the most part on the build, we differ on atack slotting and Resist En/Resist Ele. For attacks I slot, 1 Acc, 1 End Rdx, 3 Damage. I tend pick up Resist Energies (3 slotted) and if possible Resist Elements (okay if this stays at 1 slot). As Rangle mentions they are not needed, but I do find they help.

I'd have to check my builds, but I don't think I'm running Hasten on my SS builds (no reason you can't, I just usally don't). But, I am using IOs to get Rage perma.

I usually take either Laser Beam Eyes or Hurl, not usually both, and lately I've been favoring/enjoying knocking down fliers with Hurl.

I haven't been taking Unstoppable, but with softcapping it's not really needed. With i19 I'll probably work it back into the builds as a one slot power.

Fighting Pool, definately get it, Boxing, Tough and Weave. Tough allows you to Softcap S/L Resist and Weave let's you soft cap S/L Defense (helps with the other Defenses as well).

From the build you've posted I'd remove Punch, Super Speed, and Laser Beam Eyes to get the Fighting Pool (Boxing, Tough and Weave). I think you could also lose Hasten and still have enough attacks for a decent attack chain and really not notice a drop in damage output. You can decide if you want Resist Energies and Resist Elements, if not you can work some of the removed powers back in according to your tastes and play style.

Don't forget Tanker Tuesday is here on Justice next week (and every second Tuesday of the month), Dec 14th, and is always a good place to try your Tank out, see different builds and play styles, and ask advice. Also there are two Tanker Channels, TankHQ (which seems to be the more active of the two lately) and Tankers. Both are public channels and another good resource for Tanking questions.

Tanker Tuesdays: Meet in King's Row by IP Gate 6pm PT9pm ET.

3rd Tuesdays (Odd months) Freedom, (Even months) Virtue, 4th Tuesday, Tour, Server TBA

End game I would aim for something like this.
It is fairly cheap and has good defense numbers, at the cost of recharge.

It should be a build you can go from 36-50 on, and start slotting IO's for at 36/37, though you might be a bit pressed for end early on if you run everything and solo at increased difficulty. You can always shut one or both of tough/weave off when you are not teamed.

Slotted at 50, it should be able anything in the game and not have too tough of a time of it with moderate support because of high resists and almost softcap defense to most things with 1 in invince, though it wont be an offensive powerhouse.

I may be falsely assuming you are going to team with it, if you arent going to at all, I'd change some things.

The miracle/numina will probably cost as much as (more than) everything else put together, but they may not be needed if you get cardiac as an alpha.

Yell at me if you have any questions or I made bad assumptions and Ill poke at it some more.

Interesting build Q. I think I like it best of the presented ideas, especially since it lets me see effective IO and Set slotting. As you know, that's one of my weak areas since I just haven't gotten into IO's or Sets since they were introduced.

CMA's guide is informative, but it seems to focus strictly on the primary and staying with one or two sets repeated throughout the build. The build Q presented gives some alternatives to those sets and the Frankenslotting appears to keep the numbers up. The fact that it also gives me useful ideas on the secondary is a major plus.

I'll have to start pricing and buying to work on getting the IO's needed so that I'm not trying to crunch them all in at 50. I'll have to look at the various Incarnate boosts as well, although I think Cardiac may work best.

Teaming is something I'd like to get into a bit, so I'm trying to go for a build that works both solo and teamed.

Q seemed to have the best grasp on the concept of the character using SuperSpeed and not SJ. The inclusion of CJ and SJ along with Hurl were from doing a respec to take advantage of Inherent Fitness. One question I do have would be whether Hurl would take the same IO sets that LBE does, as that may fit more with the concept. I'll play with those in Mid's later now that I have a base to work off of and see how it compares.

To touch on something Rangle and Nuc brought up, since this was a Level 36 Tank, I wasn't slotting for Accuracy due to the TH Buffs in Invinc and Rage. I've not had many Acc issues since getting those slotted. As mentioned earlier, SuperSpeed is one of the concept powers for the character and I guess I should have mentioned that in the previous posts. Q's build drops SJ instead of SS which suits the character better in my mind. I do appreciate the info and will keep it in mind as I'm finishing the character.

I guess they are going to need to make the Fighting pool inherent next since it seems to be required in almost every Tank, Scrapper and Brute build I see on the forums.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

I figured one of the travel powers was part of the concept, but wasn't sure which one so I left it ambiguous as to which travel to drop except in the build.

I wasn't sure how far you wanted to take the IO sets/Set bonuses to so I didn't go all out. Quatermain's build is nice, but I'm not a big fan of Maneuvers on a tank so I'd find a different way to get you that close to the soft cap. I'm not saying don't use it, I'm just saying I probably wouldn't.

Have fun tanking and maybe we'll see you out at one of the Tanker Tuesday events.

Just looked at the build real quick and the only question/thought I have is regarding Maneuvers. It can be a real End hog when you least want it be. I've tried it on various Tanks and it hasn't been a good match. Overall it's really up to you. But, I thought I'd through my 2 inf's in anyways.

On manuvers: with phys perf, conserve power and probably cardiac, with not a lot of recharge, it should be quite managable. However, it is in the 49 slot for a reason. It is taken because there isnt really a way to get that much defense to everything in that few slots, and have it be affordable inf-wise. I would not have taken it before the fitness changes, but now I think it is quite viable to take if you are interested in defense primarily.

It could be swapped for another power of interest or dropped, and the defense numbers will still be decent for the price of the build.

re: Tex,
Everything I remember putting in LBE should fit in hurl fine. I usually take LBE just because of the extra range.

Prices for most of the stuff should be pretty low, I used the second teir stuff, which is still very servicable, but I did have not looked at prices recently, so checking would probably be a good idea.

I wouldn't say no to fighting by default, but its not really needed, just a cheap way to make an easy game easier. Fitness wasn't fully required either, but to keep pace with even an average pug group it is probably something everyone wanted, and newer players might miss out on for a while.

On your last build Rangle, some of the GotA's were somewhat expensive a while back, at least past a line I drew in my head about cost/benefit provided. Also, there is some evidence that the winters proc is only protecting movement speed, and not having an effect on recharge.

Posted

The GoTA's might be fairly expensive but I don't recall them as being as expensive as say the Kin Combat recipes. I'd have to double check.

The Winter's gift was for movement speed, not for recharge protection. With the Winter event coming up it should be relatively easy to get I would think.

Just checked on GotA recipes. Only one of the lvl 40 recipes was going for 10 mil. The rest were either 7 or 5 million. So it would be possible to get a full set for under 30 mil. The lvl 35's were less. Unfortunately there's not a lot of GotA recipes to be had atm.

After respecing my tank for I19... INVUL/EM.... i took the fighting pool, and still poicked up unstop...

My tnak is built to herd, to to solo by any moeans. and he is perfect. with the fighting pool, he damn near is unhittable, so he doesnt even have to be a meatshield anymore. and he's not even slotted with any enahnces yet.

Rangle, got access to mids and looked at the build, I should have used eradication in stomp not sure what was going on there.

You have about .1eps (6 end per minute) flat more and lose about 500hpm regen going with the GotAs. With pshifts included, the one I posted has 6 end per minute more. The price differential between serendipity and gota (even non-level 40 ones) should allow the purchase of two pshifts if shopped for with patience.

I am curious why you went with 50 s/l defense but dropped the f/c? It (50 s/l) would provide some insulation to defense debuffs, but having more foes in melee will also do that because of invince. For just running around, my personal pref. is to have balanced defense vs all types for running around against things which throw out a lot of different damage, such as the ship raid, just so I don't have multiple holes I need to plug up, though that is just my preference.

I don't find myself using unstoppable much since the advent of IOs, but coupled with high defense it is very nice in a few situations, suchas the STF (recluse can't kill you if you think a little, GW's hold can't kill you if it hits, something it can even do to granite and go), 5tf, ship raids, etc. Not every day cases to many people, but still very useful from time to time.

Anyway, Tex, I think you'd be well off with pretty much any of the builds in the thread as long as you shop smart, which is don't buy things at the maximum level (I can help you pick levels if you arent sure where the enhancer drop off is "too much") and don't pay the buy-it-now price.

A couple updates to the build, one of them based on the erads rangle used and I forgot to use and some minor moving of IO's for better slotting I missed due to being in a hurry and changing a couple things I shouldn't have done in the first place.

It really comes down to personal preference. I'll use the Serendipity for different builds, but for my Inv. I found that I liked using the GotA better. Yes, I don't have as much hp bonuses as you do, but the build I crafted has Dull Pain up more often which in my mind covers that difference. Neither is wrong. Again, just personal preference.

As for the lower f/c numbers, since typically most fire/cold attacks are also s/l I wasn't as concerned about f/c defense. You're build is very well laid out and wouldn't be a wrong direction for Texas. I just wanted to present a different view.
