Anti-virus help

So i got a new computer yesterday, and of course it comes loaded with norton, which i know is a total cluster of a system hog.

I had been using AVG for years but it seems like every new version gets closer and closer to being the hog norton and macafee have been. So just wondering is there a good reliable free antivirus out there that all the cool kids are using?

Not sure if it will help ya but I'm using the free version of Avast

I have the free Avast on several machines, and the free Avira on the others. Both seem to do the job and both have a pretty small footprint. Of the two I slightly prefer Avira... but either works and I don't prefer it enough to change the machines that already have Avast.

I'd also suggest Spybot and Malwarebytes for additional security; I don't have them set up to run all the time, I just run a weekly check with them. So far I haven't had anything get past either Avira or Avast so Spybot and Malwarebytes have yet to find anything. Still, I sometimes get paranoid and it's not a bad thing to have other tools to double check.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials and it works a treat.

Avast and Avira are currently good choices, and I wouldn't fault anybody for using them.

For me, I prefer the Immunet spin on SourceFire's ClamAV: http://www.clamav.net/lang/en/about/win32/

Thing is though, an Anti-Virus can only protect you against known threats, and even then, it won't protect you against all threats. Tools like the aforementioned Spybot Search and Destroy will help close up other entry points that malware uses to enter the computer.

Then there is also the software you use to connect to the Internet. Microsoft's gained a lot of press on the upcoming IE9 since it (finally) is adhering to W3C specifications. I still wouldn't use it.

To connect to the internet, use Mozilla FireFox, Opera, Google Chrome, Apple Safari, KDE Konqueror... anything but IE... and your realistic exposure to malicious software is cut down.

That being said, there isn't much you can do about another vector point being leveraged these days, Adobe Flash. While there are Flash replacements such as GNU Gnash and Lightspark, Windows development isn't exactly a priority with code contributers.

Both avira and avast on the webpage only talk about OS up to windows vista, does anyone know if they are ok for w7?

I just run ComboFix on my machine every morning

Seriously though - Malwarebytes, by ginormous leaps and bounds, catches more stuff than the others do - just make sure to update it before you run it. You can get a full version that does more stuff for about $20 but the free version gives you everything you need.

Hitman Pro 3.5 is working out pretty nicely too - but the free license only lasts a month.

Any one AV program is just about as useless as another in protecting you from getting infected in the first place (the programs I mentioned above are just really good at cleaning things up AFTER you get infected) - the best thing you can do to protect yourself is keep java, adobe, and windows up to date...and remember that just because a little window that says 'do you want to run this file' comes up does not mean you have to always click 'yes'.

I don't know about Avast but I can tell you for sure that Avira works on Windows 7. I'd have to assume both do though.

There are 3 kinds of people in this world
The kind that makes things happen

The kind that watch things happen

And then there are those of us who keep asking "WTH just happened!"

I'm running avast in Windows 7 64bit and works as well as it did in windows vista.

Same here. At least the first part of the sentence. I never used Vista.
