I'm totally new to the whole marketing system. Can someone please explain to me how 'flipping' works. If I buy a very expensive recipe, craft it, and put it up on the market again should I come out with a handful of inf?

Always check the price of the crafted IO before you craft and list. Most of the time you would make inf. However, sometimes you'd lose as some IOs trade cheaper than their own recipes due to competition in the crafting market.

If you're brand new to marketeering, I'd recommend you start in the guides
section.

I'll also throw out a shameless plug for the guide in my signature as it is a
time proven, safe and easy starting point for beginners (but not the only
one of course).

As for your actual question, "flipping" is the purchase of an item at one price,
followed by the immediate re-listing of it at a higher price.

Crafting is the process of gathering a recipe, it's required salvage and then
crafting it into a completed IO for use or sale. Whether it sells well or not,
depends on what it is - some are pure gold, and some are mangy mutts.

All of those approaches can be quite profitable. The time and effort required
varies between them, as does the relative risk.

Flipping is buying, say, Steel for 12,000 and selling them for 500,000 or higher. Mostly it works when supply is low. You can flip almost anything though.

Crafting is buying, say, 5 or 10 Mako's Bite dam/rech for 500 influence each, buying 5-10 of each salvage on bids that fill overnight so you get it all pretty low, then selling the crafted IOs for 5-10 million a piece, whatever they happen to be going for. Just so long as your purchase price + salvage + crafting costs + market fees are much less than your sale price, which they frequently are by a wide margin. People like to spend high to avoid crafting themselves.

Crafting can also be rolling tickets or merits/amerits for recipes which you craft and sell. This takes more time but you essentially get your recipes for free -- you buy them with the time investment needed to generate the tickets or merits. Takes longer to get salvage for multiple different recipes too, but you can score big when the Random Number Generator is kind to you.

And I craft whatever good stuff I get in drops, too.
