Build Advice

Caulderone

So I took a long break from the game but after a lot of the changes over the years CoH seems to have made a lot of great changes and I came back.

I wanted to build a single character I could really focus on and had 3 goals in mind.

1) The character must be useful on a team
2) The character must be able to solo regular content reasonably well
3) The overall character design must take a lot of time and effort to achieve

After testing some AT's and browsing the boards I found a WP/FM tanker post that really spurred my interest, gave me good idea where to start with a build and have loved playing the AT so far.

I'd love some feedback on the build. I realize it's an expensive build but I'd rather a single character having a long term goal than many alts.

Well apparently just the act of posting on a public board gets the juices flowing. I had noticed an oversite with the tohit buffing and modified the build a little bit.

If anyone noticed anything else I may have missed in the build please let me know!

You can softcap this character pretty easily to Smashing/Lethal/Energy/Negative, but the way you are slotted isn't going to do it I don't think (I'm at work so I can't access Mids at the moment)

Fire and Cold damage are less common than Energy and Negative, and the vast majority of Cold attacks have a Smashing or Lethal component (meaning your S/L defense will defend against them as well)

I recommend slotting your PBAoE powers with 4xEradication and 2xScirocco's Dervish. Doing that nets you: 1.8% more endurance, 3.75% E/N defense, 2.25% max HP (really important for a WP tank), and another 10% regen from Scirocco's.

You have the right idea with the Kinetic Combats in your single target attacks, but I would replace the Aegis you have in some of your powers with Reactive Armor (and drop the 5th one from Tough and put your Steadfast Res/Def there instead). Alternately you could replace Resurgance with Strength of Will and put the Steadfast Res/Def there instead. (that's actually the route I'd go)

You also have the right idea with slotting Numina's where you can. I would do the same with High Pain Tolerance (you can slot 3 Numina's for the Regen/max HP bonus, and 3 Aegis for the F/C defense)

Slot Taunt with 4xMocking Beratement. Willpower has a Weak Taunt aura so you'll want to add some duration to your Taunt, and Mocking Beratement gives you 2.5% to S/L defense.

Pull the Performance Shifter ENdMod/Acc/Rech and Acc/Rech out of Quick Recovery and put in a Performance Shifter Chance for +End. Put a Chance for +end in Physical Perfection as well. (they are not uniques, so you can put in as many as you have powers that will take them, I'd put one in Stamina too when it becomes inherent) They check to give you a flat 10 endurance back every 10 seconds when put in a passive power, which is unaffected by recovery debuffs.

Replace the LotG Def/EndRed in Combat Jumping with a Kismet +6% Accuracy (it's name is misleading, it is actually a to-hit buff, which is much better than accuracy)

Replace the GSFC in Build Up with a 2xRectified Reticle and a generic recharge IO, gives you another 1.88% S/L defense.

That's about all that jumps out at me, hope it helps.

I'm over cap for smashing/lethal and (at work as well now) in the 40's for the others. Your right though, if spending this much time on a character I'd like to hit/exceed the caps if it's possible.

That's great to know. I had heard fire/cold were rare but didn't realize that energy and negative should be a concern.

I'll check it out. I know my HP bonuses are harder to get due to the rule of 5 but the regen/defense/end would be fantastic! And if I haven't hit 5 10% bonuses that's just icing on the cake.

Confused by this one (still learning some of the powers) but I'm sure once I have mids in front of me it will make more sense. Resurgence was a filler for the most part so replacing it wouldn't hurt the build in anyway.

Already hitting the rule of 5 for Numina's max HP bonus =( Not too concerned with fire/cold defense capping. I'll check it out though and see what slots I can commit to it.

I'll need to see if there are slots free for this but it's a solid idea.

I never even realized that the +END would work in an auto power! This is great news!

Think about the sheer number of Electric attacks you encounter in the game. Clockwork, Freakshow, Arachnos Mu. Electric attacks are pure energy damage, and they are everywhere. Energy is the third most common damage type (behind Smashing and Lethal), and there are a LOT of attacks that don't have another component to defend against.

I absolutely LOVE that combination for builds that are chasing typed defense.

Strength of Will is your Willpower tier 9. It is completely unaffected by any recharge bonuses of any kind. You could have 5000% recharge and it won't come back one second faster. It also boosts your resistance by a large amount. Since it is unaffected by recharge, it does not crash your entire end bar when it wears off like most tier 9s in resistance/defense sets. If Resurgance was just a placeholder I definitely recommend picking up Strength of Will instead. It's a great place to put things like the Steadfast Res/Def because it doesn't really need any extra slots at all. Also, it is always better to take a power that will help keep you alive than take a power that anticipates death.

Already hitting the rule of 5 for Numina's max HP bonus =( Not too concerned with fire/cold defense capping. I'll check it out though and see what slots I can commit to it.
In that case, slot 2 Numina's, a generic Heal IO, and 3 Reactive Armor (gives you more E/N defense)

Quote:
I'll need to see if there are slots free for this but it's a solid idea.
If you follow all of my advice you should have 3 slots free.

Quote:
I never even realized that the +END would work in an auto power! This is great news!
Yep, a Willpower brute can actually slot FOUR of them.

Quote:
Good call!
If you're already over the cap for S/L defense, the Rectified Reticle and Mocking Beratement slotting will make up for the S/L defense you're losing by swapping out the Obliteration for Eradication. Also, if I remember the set bonuses correctly, you are getting 2 1.88% max HP bonuses from Obliteration as well, swapping them out will free up room to slot Numina's in High Pain Tolerance.

Quote:
Absolutely amazing advice. I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out.
No problem at all. Ironically, I don't actually have a high level Willpower character myself, I just know the set bonuses that work well with it. (My highest is a level 35 Elec/WP brute)

Maybe I should actually build one sometime.

PS, if I get a chance I'll post a build that illustrates what I'm talking about better. I should be able to adjust the one you have here without even having to swap any powers around.

I don't really have much to add to the good advice so far, but I will say this.

Mocking Beratement actually rocks all the way out to 6 slots. The 5th slot is a huge F/C defense bonus and the 6th is a ever juicy 7.5% recharge.

MB is just awesome.

Also, I would suggest SoW just as noted, but I'd put the Gladiator's +3 Def in it. Since it has no enhancement value, and SoW doesn't need any enhancing, it's a perfect fit.

Heh, I was scanning the thread to see of anyone had added this. That recharge bonus doesn't even conflict with the LOTG 7.5% bonus so you can have 5 of each. If you can scrounge the slots, MB is very worth slotting out.

Well, got home and polished the build a bit. Took your advice in the places I could. Only used 1 set of 2xScirocco's Dervish in the AOE's due to the 5 rule making the second useless.

Placed some Armageddon in the other for the proc and pumped up IO. I think this should work ok.

S/L and E/N now are both over 50% =D

Going to browse over everything and make sure that nothing got overlooked

My main concern with this build is that you're using a lot of slots in Focused Accuracy that could be better used elsewhere. For one thing, FA is a huge endurance hog, and not even that useful anymore since you can get most of the bonuses with a couple of IOs. And with inherent Stamina, I really don't think you'll need Physical Perfection for additional regen/recovery. I would take Fast Healing much earlier though, since regen is a core component of WP's damage mitigation.

IMO, in most casees a full Gaussian's set isn't worth the slots in a typed defense build, and especially in your case where those slots could be better used elsewhere. For instance, HPT is currently underslotted for Heal, and as others have mentioned, six-slotting Taunt with MB would be a good choice. I'd drop the Energy pool altogether and pick up a couple of powers from the Pyre Mastery or another epic pool. You won't have a ton of slots to use, but you could pull one from Hasten if necessary.

I'd also recommend replacing the Armageddon Acc/Rchg in FSC with a Damage/Rchg so you'll be fully slotted for damage even when the proc doesn't hit.

Your slotting of MoB and Tough is rather odd, too, since MoB (which has a larger base resistance value) is underslotted and Tough is slotted with an unnecessary End/Rchg. I'd move the Steadfast +Def to MoB and swap out the RA End/Rchg for a RA resistance, which will improve your S/L resistance a few percentage points. A small change, but one that costs no additional slots.

Here's the changes I suggested for your build; even without the Gaussian's bonus, your S/L/E/NE is still above 50%, and the change to the Pyre Mastery pool would allow you to soft-cap F/C def as well.

Thanks for taking the time to look at the build Finduillas. I took a look at your build and it looks solid. I didn't take all of your advice, but I think what I did take really helped to improve my build.

I do agree about my tough and MoB slotting. This completely slipped my attention. Thanks a ton for pointing that out. Fixed!

The Fire Sword circle slotting I've pretty uncertain about. I've updated it to take you feedback into account. Thanks a ton, I think it turned out much better.

On a side note, removed a slot from quick recovery and added it to HPT to address the under slotting for heal you pointed out. I think this build has enough END to sacrifice the small set bonus for the extra HP and regen that provides.

As for when fast healing is taken, I agree it should be sooner but I'm more concerned with level 50 performance than anything else at this point. I have lots of respecs so, if needed, I can swap when the powers are taken down the line.

Sorry I didn't get a chance to post a build. The explanation can be found in my sig

Looks like you have everything well in hand though. I don't see anything I would be especially concerned about changing in your last build.

Congratulations Claws! I have a couple little ones myself and know just how busy they can keep you at that age

Was reviewing my build and had a question for the pro's out there. Is it possible to get perma-hasten if I only 2 slot it? Just trying to think of ways to tighten the build and free up and extra slot.

I felt that you have too many unimportant slots in combat jump so whilst I can't see the build I would suggest pulling a slot from there, if you need to pull a slot from somewhere. The importance of perma hasten is what anyway?

Combat jump just has those slots for the set bonus' really. I'd like an extra slot for i19 and slotting health.

I'd hate to lose defense and health from removing a slot from combat jumping if I can remove a slot from hasten with no repercussions.

The level of extra defense in overall build terms gets lower for each of those extra slots in combat jump because its base value is low. I basically never second def slot it and consider an end slot there a waste. Haste has slightly higher value than combat jump normally in terms of survivability I find because it can affect both damage sustainability and damage distribution but for you it's pretty much helping to save on rechg slotting of your attacks. Attacks can be important under -rechg circumstances when fighting something you really want to see dead before you pop your clogs. I'd even winters gift combat jump before an extra def slot usually.

I agree completely. I would not want to sacrifice my haste up time to free up a slot.

However, if haste would have 100% up time with only 2 slots there does not seem to be a benefit to the third slot in it for recharge. I'm simply not certain if it would still have 100% up time if the third slot was removed so I figured I would ask if anyone knows.

It's possible to get perma-Hasten with only two slots in the power. For a Tanker it's not anywhere near easy, though. You're losing ~16% recharge enhancement from Hasten by ditching the third slot (assuming level 50 generic Recharge IOs). In order to make that up through global recharge bonuses, you'd need a purple set and a 6.25% bonus from somewhere (usually from ranged/control powers).

It ain't exactly easy to get perma-Hasten with three slots, frankly. You need another ~101% in global recharge after you account for Hasten itself and the ~99% you'll get from three generic IOs (@ level 50). That's a lot, particularly for a melee character, because melee characters generally don't have easy access to 6.25% bonuses, and because melee characters generally try to enhance DEF.

So the short answer is yes, it's possible. The longer answer is that there's almost no plausible scenario where saving that one slot on Hasten will be the most efficient option, unless you don't care about Hasten's uptime. Obviously, you do care.

Thanks a ton! I will avoid removing that slot then =)
