Merits and Hero Merits

Are Hero merits the same thing as just Merits? I did the tips missions till I got all 10 point under Hero, then I did the Hero morality mission. I didn't get a hero merit, I just got a merit. Are these the same thing?

No.

There are Vanguard Merits from Rikti stuff once you join the Vanguard at level 35.

There are Reward Merits (old merits) which are spent at Merit Vendors.

Now we have the new Hero and Villain Merits known as Alignment merits by most players. They can only be spent in The Crucible (villains) and Fort Trident (heroes).

You can buy an alignment merit for 20 million inf and 50 reward merits at The Crucible or Fort Trident.

The first time you reinforce a hero or villain morality you get 50 Reward Merits. After that it awards 1 hero or 1 villain merit.

The first time you reinforce your alignment as Hero or Villain you get 50 merits. After that you get 1 A-Merit. A-Merits are separate to regular Reward Merits, are redeemed in a totally different place (the lame looking Fort Trident, linked to from a crappy Caves doorway by a pond in Atlas Park) and offer things far more cheaply (most Uniques are 2 A-Merits but over 100 Reward Merits for example). Turning an A-Merit in can also give you 5 Random Rolls whereas with regular Reward Merits you get 1 random roll for 20 merits.

Can you get purples with a-merits? And will you be able to get incarnate salvage/components with a-merits?

Purples yes, incarnate stuff no.

EDIT: the price of purples is *extremely* high. I think what most people are doing is not buying purples directly. Instead they're getting pricey IO's like the Luck of the Gambler global recharge and selling a few of those to fund buying a purple.

Yeah, once you have saved the 20-25 for a purple you may as well save for the 35 for the currently 2 billion+ PvP recipe.

What are people's feelings on how to spend the Alignment Merits? I have a couple H-merits and I am tempted to pick up a LotG 7.5% recipe directly, but might it be more economical to get the random recipe rolls? What do you lot usually do?

If you can stomach a bad roll or many bad rolls in the long haul you will do better with the random rolls. However you will need to accept you may get a lot of worthless junk before you strike it rich.

I do the random rolls.

I've done 15 a-merit rolls this month (actually I've done more than that, but I'm documenting a roll a day on a specific character). I've made a little over 1 billion influence so far. It's a lot more work to craft and sell all the random recipes, and it helps that I'm an experienced marketeer, but I estimate (based on my experience so far) that I will make about 1.2 billion influence on 15 a-merits. 7 LotG +7.5% would have netted me a bit less... maybe 950 million to 1 billion, if they sold close to 150 million a piece. So the difference isn't necessarily huge, and it's less work to do the LotG's, and it's less random of course.

As long as the one PvP IO sells for 30 merits and goes for more than 2 billion, that seems like the best money maker.

Note - random rolls always give you a recipe at your level, or the set's max level, whichever is lower. The slider merely sets the possible drops.

LotG: Global Recharge is a "Global" IO - as such it functions as a set bonus - and ceases to function at it's level -4 and below (important if you ever exemplar).

Choosing/not random rolling lets you set the slider to the desired level and have the recipe BE that level.

I use the merits in whatever way seems most efficient. Broadly, I find that to be along the following lines.

  • If I want a rare (but not purple or PvP) item that costs more than 100M on the market, I often buy it with either A-Merits or R-Merits
    • If the item costs 1 A-Merit but under 100 R-Merits, it's probably better to spend R-Merits on it, otherwise spend the A-Merit
    • If the item costs 2 A-Merits but under 200 R-Merits, it's also probably better to spend R-Merits on it, otherwise spend the A-Merits
  • If the item in question is significantly less than 100M on the market, I just buy it off the market with Inf, assuming one is available in a reasonable period of time. (If you want something at a low or odd-ball level, supply rates can be very low.)
  • If the item is a purple, the only two choices are A-Merits or the market. A-Merit prices are currently too high compared to market prices. Through playing 50s and selling drops I can earn the money to buy a purple with Inf outright faster than I can earn the A-Merits to create it. That's not including the fact that I can use merits to create things per my first bullet above and sell them on the market for more Inf if I need it.
  • The only PvPOs I would try to buy with A-Merits are the ones that sell for 2B on-market or more off-market. Those are worth 4-6x as much Inf as I can usually manage to pay for even the priciest of purples, and cost 1.4x as many A-Merits to create.
Hope that helps.
