My New City of Heroes Rig

Newegg Linky (Edited to fix the link: Thanks, Master-Blade!)

Any glaring holes? I know the video card isn't the best of the best, but it should run CoH pretty well. And sound, well... I can handle plain on-board for now.

First hole is it's asking me to log in to view your Wish List. I think there should be a way to provide a link to the Public Wish list, but I forgot how.

Edit:
I figured it out. Here is the real link:

Edit2:
I took a quick look over the parts, and they appear to be compatible and very good specs. You even have my second-favorite case (next to the Antec 900s). I wasn't sure I'd like that CPU cooler, but quick research on the reviews make it seem like it will do the job just fine. I personally went with a Zalman 9700 for just a little bit more money. To each his own.

Overall it seems good to me at first glance. I hope it works out for you. I'm sure other people will come in and make alternate suggestions for parts that might give you a little bit more bang for the buck. We'll see what happens. Good luck!

Not a glaring hole really, more of a better value for your money thing. I would change the hex core cpu for a quad core http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103727 most apps wont take advantage of the 2 extra cores and the quad core will give you better performance per core. The extra money you save on the cpu upgrade your video from the 6850 to the 6870.

Looks reasonable. Just two points. Informational only.

First the HD 6850 falls bellow the HD 5850 in general performance but better than either the HD 5770 or 5830 (not hard).

Second for around $45-50 less you can get the Phenom II X4 970 BE which runs at 3.5GHz instead of only 3.2GHz. Unless you have a reason for needing two more cores, or you are planing to OC the CPU so stock clocks aren't important. I'm guessing OCing with by your heatsink choice.

I do a lot of image processing with my desktop, so it's going to be used for more than just CoH. That's pretty much the reason for the X6 over the X4, which I had considered. The 6850 was selected because I wanted a step up from the 5770 (which is a decent card for CoH, I've found), but I didn't want to pay the extra $60 for the 5850/70 or the 6870.

But now you guys have me thinking I might have made a minor misstep. *chuckles*

One more thing, you might have a problem with the CPU cooler fitting on that motherboard. The heat sink adjacent to the cpu socket is fairly tall along the lower edge of the CPU socket (look at the pictures of the motherboard at NewEgg, the blue ribbon with Asus on it).

Thought of this after reading the review of the fancier (adjustable mood lighting, oh boy!) version of the V6 over at Guru3D where they were forced to mount the heat sink with the fans pointing up and not to the rear due to a too tall heat sink on their motherboard. It's talked about on page 6 of the review.

As to my previous post. Just didn't want you to think that the 6850 was as fast as the 5850 (6850 > 5850 in the numbering scheme therefore shouldn't it be faster?). I've seen too many posts from people using that logic.

Also there are a few people who think more cores must be better and disregard clock speed. Glad to know you have a practical reason for a hex core.

If you were just a gamer then I would have told you to shunt the $45-50 you would save from going with the quad into the graphics card budget and get the HD 6870 or even a super overclocked GTX 460.

We'll have to see how it goes. Most of the air-based coolers I've seen are large, much like that one, though some have better clearance. We'll have to see how it goes.

Thanks for the heads up.

Honestly, I think that the extra bit for the 6870 over the 6850 might be worthwhile as the upgrade to the 6850 from a 5770 isn't as significant.

That's my two cents worth. Beyond that, I have nothing to say. Anyway you go, its looking to be a pretty sweet system.

While the performance gap between the 5770 and the 5830 is fairly narrow (~15%), the gap between the 5770 and the 6850 is a lot more reasonable (~40%). Gap between the 6850 and the 6870 isn't that large, also only around 15%. If you are looking at performance per dollar, the 6850 is the better choice simply because the current price difference is around 30% for only a 15% improvement.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. All the parts should be here tomorrow or Thursday, so I'm getting all worried about putting it together. Of course, I've never had anything go wrong in building a box, but I always get all kinds of concerned right before the actual build.

Me too! Though I've usually done SOMETHING wacky and have to make an adjustment or two. This time, however, everything went slick as snot. The thing is a BEAST, running everything on max settings at about 40-50FPS.

Like the LED leads plugged in backwards? I've built several machines where the proper alignment was... a bit ambiguous.
