Thanks for stepping in and offering. Next Monday I can handle the hero-side pre-announcements so that will be less work for you.
Naah, I'm good blueside. I figure with switching between 2 accounts (on 2 boxen) to minimize wait times, and leaving a few toons beforehand in the most out-of-the-way zones (those that take more than 1 min. to get to and get out of, like Cimerora or Dark Astoria) I should easily make it under 1 hour.

But if you really want to help, Cim and the PvP zones are a particular pain in the butt for me

Got it.

Were you planning more rounds before next Monday just before the event?

Hummm... might not be a bad idea to do another round of announcements either Friday evening or Saturday evening.

Which one would be best ?

Sweet.

Not sure if I'll be on tonight, but in any case I should still have room in my ingame email box (@stalemate).

And thanks Phillygirl - did you have anything you'd prefer doing?

Fridays are harder for me, since I'm lugging the kids around and may be drafted into some sort of shopping for foodstuffs by Cass. To be honest, she just needs me to carry the heavy stuff but hates having me around since I always wind up throwing extra stuff in the basket/cart.

Of course, it's almost always detrimental to my weight loss too.

...

How did I get here from there?

Back on track: Saturday morning?

can't make it on that time, but have some costume recipes lying around if you can use those.

I can't on Saturday mornings.

I can do that round of announcement by myself, I just want to select a time where it can reach the most players, hence Friday evening or Saturday evening, or when ?

OK, it's the manic-compulsive control freak in me talking, but...
... do we have a voice channel on hand to help with the coordination during the event ?

I humbly submit I have a lil' home server with both Ventrilo 3.0 server and TeamSpeak 3 Server installed (*)
I think Stalemate also has his own setup; either way is ok with me.

(*) it also has Teamspeak 2 Server, but that's kinda pointless since I installed TS3...

I can't believe I missed this thread. I should be free Monday night at that time, so I can help judge, help coordinate, and/or contribute some more Inf - whatever's needed at this point.

Let's do that.

Can you send the info directly to the other volunteers, or would you prefer I reach them instead?

I am PM'ing you the info so you can pass it along since I am apparently too flakey. I have myself doing 3 different things tonight luckily 2 of them are at different times.

Please don't overextend yourself Phillygirl - if you have other things to do tonight that will be quite fine. We already have enough folks to cover the events, and your generosity is already much appreciated.

I went around promoting the event in the major zones yesterday evening finally, instead of Saturday morning, since my weekend was a flurry of activity.

Really disappointing. :/ Maybe the timing of it? I don't think we've ever run an event on a Monday before...

City of Heroes taught me that when the world is burning, you don't just stand by and watch, you grab a fire extinguisher and do whatever you can to stop it-even if it's not much at all. Sign the petition to keep City of Heroes alive HERE.

All right, allow me to get the ball rolling on this post mortem (great term Arch btw).

I think Kyo hit on something here, re: the weeknight chosen.

I'd even add that hosting it on the evening right after the (official and player-led) Halloween event(s) was not the best of ideas.

I wanted to have the New Player Night after all this activity to avoid interference, and before the Rikti Invasion came around. IIRC, Monday nights had been used in the past for the early New Player Nights, and we never had this issue, but this year given the circumstances it appears to have been less than ideal.

I can't find fault for the promotional legwork - in fact, I think this was the most promoted New Player Council activity ever, outside of the Mentor Project.

This leaves pretty much only the following in my mind as reasons why things didn't work out so well:

  • Post Halloween drop in server activity (Protector has been green now for the last few days, instead of yellow like when GR hit). - Easy fix: better scheduling.
  • New players have not been reached, despite our efforts. - Find new / different / better methods?
  • Event itself was uninteresting to new players. - Find new / different / better events. Increase prize package?

I'll add, again, that perhaps a change in management might be in order, if I'm no longer able to organize these successfully. The goal is to retain new players on our server, and if someone else can do a better job I'll step down and give that person 100% support. I'm not in this for popularity.

To recap yesterday night's activity:

No events planned were held, for lack of participation. 2 attendants showed up (details below)
  • 10M+20M won by @TwilightPhoenix for impromptu Hide and Seek games to introduce the night's activities.
  • 50M + Wing Recipe given to Agent Everyman (unsure of global - saw announcement on Protector Vigilance chan)
  • 50M + Boot recipe to @officer dark (sp? - was in Pocket D by chance)
  • 100M to @SapphireShot since she was the only other player with less than 12 months in Pocket D. (agreed upon by the other 3 volunteers who were in Pocket D at 9PM when we called it quits)

This leaves 500M inf available for the next New Player Council event, for a total of 950M. (the other 30M was given out by Cassiopea and I for the Hide and Seek)

I was not a part of the event but stopped by as a spectator. It really is unfortunate that the turnout was not great. I only play sparsely but even I caught some of the promotional announcements in game. Maybe we just don't really have a new player population? =(

Posted

Sorry to hear it didn't draw the crowds the way you had hoped.

As one of the judges of the Protector Costume Contest event on Friday and Sat, I can tell you that if we hadn't been able to use the Dev's Costume Contest on Friday to promote ours, our turnout would have been far less. As it was, we didn't have a full zone, which has happened before for much less promoted contests in the past.

My thinking is that for the next one you do, make sure to have people in attendance to promote your event at any Dev event, Costume Contest, etc. Having someone announce your event at the Dev Costume Contest in Pocket D might have gotten a few more to show up.

Trying to reach new/recent players is a challenge. Maybe working with some new player-friendly SG's might help. The leaders can announce your event to their members, and then they can assist other new players. Might get a few new players into SG's that will be there to help them learn the game. That could be a win-win for all involved.

Here's some things to consider.

It doesn't take that long to make a character.
Players can save/load costumes.
Players can transfer money between servers.

Maybe promotion needs to happen across all US servers to be successful. I mean, how many people, particularly at this point, start on Protector? The whole point is to help new players everywhere, right?

You know, that comment is probably truer than we care to believe.

When Going Rogue came along, Protector was steadily in the yellow range for activity, but... almost everyone I checked out had quite a few months' worth of vet badges on them.

We may just be catering to a clientèle that is much smaller than before.
