How to use voice chat with CoH?

I just got a new headset/microphone to use with another online game - wondering what my options are for using it with CoH?

(Only other thread I found on this using Forum Search was from 2009 - and ParagonWiki doesn't have an entry using "voice" as a search term)

There is no built in voice chat for CoH. If you know people who have their own voicechat set up through ventrilo, you can run that application in the background at the same time without issues.

Ventrillo and Skype.

OK I'll get Googling on those, but if anyone else wants to flesh this out a bit and give me an idea of how those would work and what to expect...

-are those programs free?

-are voice-teams easier/harder to find?

-are there dedicated voice SGs?

-does it work like, we all get on a "conference call" before playing?

-is it "worth it"? Effortless, built-in voice chat is great, but I don't intend to jump through hoops for it if it's a pain to actually use it.

-Yes they're free

-Many SGs have a vent or TS server.
-Skype works like that
-Its free, its not built in.

Using vent is often a simple matter of if the people have a server and give you the connection info. It's purely ad hoc basis, and generally PuG teams don't use it. There are some SGs or even Global Channels who run a vent server as well, but as I said it's on a personal basis.

Sounds like my best bet would be to post down in my Server forum then? Ask about finding a group that can hold my hand if I wanna try this out?

Yup. If you're not already part of an SG or channel that uses vent, there's not a lot of point to getting hyped about setting it up, unless you have some people want to talk to.

Ventrilo requires a server, there are lots of providers who supply that for a small fee. I pay $3 per month for a 12 slot ventrilo server... that means that up to 12 people can be chatting at one time. Each person chatting will need to install the Ventrilo client software (free at www.ventrilo.com) and will need to enter the server information into the client. After that's done you and your friends simply start up vent and connect to the server to chat. It's low computer overhead and once you've set up the server and clients it's very easy to use.

Another option is Skype, everyone needs the (free) client and a (free) Skype account. It works like a conference call where one person hosts the call... that person will call everyone. The bad part is that if the host drops then the call drops also and people can't simply join the conversation, whoever's hosting needs to initiate the call and add new people in each time. On the good side Skype is completely free and very high sound quality. On the negative, in addition to the aforementioned host caller requirement it has a good bit more overhead than Vent. You won't notice this on a dual core or better computer but it's going to drag CoH performance on a single core computer.

I have and use both with my SG, we typically use Vent normally and switch to Skype if we're adding teammates who don't have Vent.

Another program that is very similar to Ventrilo is Teamspeak. I used to use that quite a bit with a supergroup I was in a few years back.

Personally, I only worry about voice chatting with friends who I am playing with. Whenever I get together and play with them, we usually Skype.

My friends and I are using xfire's voice capability. It's very stable and easy to use. Even has a nifty little transparent patch that shows on the game screen which will show the name of the person that is talking. Doesn't require a server. Did I mention it is free?

There's another new option created by the people at Dolby called Dolby Axon. My SG is planning on trying it out and I've heard nothing but good things about it. Google it and check it out.
