call for 9/11-themed arcs

I was thinking of running some 9/11 themed arcs this weekend with the MA Superteam and I need suggestions.

Wanted, arcs which feature any of the following:

  • 9/11
  • Patriotism
  • Firefighters
  • Policemen/women
  • First Responders
  • Military
  • New York City
  • The Twin Towers
  • Ground Zero
  • The American Flag
  • Uncommon heroism by the common man
  • Defeating terrorists

Post any arcs you think would fit the theme or PM them to me.
I've found a few from this thread in Player Events, but I'd like to see what else the MA Community has to offer.

I could not think of any 9/11 themed arcs that I know of ... so I decided to write one.

Crisis at Talos Towers
Arc ID: 448216
Level range: 43-49

A Rikti dropship has struck the Talos Towers, causing massive structural damage and setting them on fire. First responders attempted to evacuate the building, but have themselves been trapped by the fire and debris. They need a hero. Can you help?

It's a quickie 1-mission arc, kinda thin on plot and has not been playtested by anyone but me, but it should be on-topic. Not sure if I will keep it published long term, though, since it's really just for this particular date.

would you be able to find one even? I think the devs frown upon creating arcs that depict anything that anyone may find offensive. Not that I would, but there's some sensitive people out there.

I'd also have to chuck my hat in with the 'frowning upon' of these kind of arcs.

My personal opinion on the 9/11 subject is that an AE arc referencing it (in whatever way) would be distasteful.

And the final point about 'defeating terrorists' is, for me, a touch too Conservative. The challenge would be, in my opinion, taking a more detached view of history and actually exploring why those people are terrorists, but even that is full of pitfalls and traps. Otherwise it all ends up being Team America without the self-deprecation and irony.

I know it won't perfectly fit for 9/11 but have you considered running LaserJesus' Made to Wave the Flag? I know it broke at one point since the generator destructable seems to break at least once an issue but I know it's back and hopefully he got it fixed.

I disagree. Comics and superheroes are a fitting theme for telling these kinds of stories. I remember one of the first steps in the healing process, for me, was Amazing Spider-Man's tribute book and the 9/11 collaborative.

I also think there's room for all kinds of stories in MA. Whether they're funny, fantasy, heroic or somber.

The events of 9/11 impacted people in many different ways and MA provides a unique medium to tell stories related to it. The theme is wide open for interpretation: from expressing gratitude to the first responders, unwavering patriotism, untold tales of heroism, a Paragon perspective, or a touching memorial.

I agree, it can be a touchy subject, esp if handled poorly, but I don't see why it'd be any more touchy than an arc made for Memorial Day, July 4th, or Veterans Day.

And I think avoiding the subject is counter to the lessons learned that day..."Let us never forget."

I look forward to seeing the arcs people have come up with and esp PW's Paragon take.

Were the airwaves filled with "Pearl Harbor" stuff in November and December of 1950? When was the USS Arizona Memorial dedicated? Twenty-one years after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Back in the day, Americans got on with their lives and LIVED. They didn't insist upon going back, revisiting, picking at, and wallowing.

When I was a kid, you didn't see every single highway curve littered with little shrines to the people unfortunate enough to have been killed there. Now, they're everywhere, giving us one more thing to wallow in. Yes, sad things happen. The world is not a safe place. Grow up, get on with life, and let the dead bury the dead.

Sorry, folks, but I am NOT a disciple of Dr. Phil, Oprah, Jerry Springer, or the rest of what American culture has allowed itself to become. We used to look forward, get on with life, and move ahead. Now we look back, swim in the warm sea of self pity, and wallow in the mud of self indulgence.

This could be offensive to some. Not everyone who plays the game is American. There's a reason they moved the Patriot badge away from the American flag to in front of the statue of someone who is an honorary citizen of every country on earth.

Yes, Paragon City is in the US, but not everyone in Paragon City is American either. Some of them aren't even from this planet.

Eva, that was just one of many examples of the different directions an arc with this theme can take. There's probably hundreds of arcs that are not even 9-11 related that are offensive to some, "you can't please all the people all the time" and whatnot.

Anyway, we found some good arcs to play today. Thanks again to PW and Zam for some great suggestions.
