what kinda brute is he running? if its /fire, /dark or /ele, maybe a buffer that can give +defense to your friend since both those builds have resistance only (dark has some defense) or a kinectic so u can give ur friend speed boost ( +recov). a coruptor would work good here and u can kill from range and buff
if the brute your friend is rolling does alot of single target damage maybe get a toon that does alot of aoe like a dominator.
usually a toon thats not melee based is what i see people do when teamin with a brute as a duo.
for my gf's broad sword/shield scrapper i duo with her on my earth/storm controller because i do alot of debuffs and aoe damage, so it makes the attacks she deals out stronger.

In all seriousness though, my vote goes to a Kinetic, particularly a Sonic/Kin Corr or a Kin/Sonic Defender. Combine the damage increases granted by Fulcrum Shift and Siphon Power with the damage resistance debuffs of Sonic attacks and you'll be busting the damage cap with impunity. Toss in Speed Boost, Transfusion and Transference to keep the Brute going strong and fast, and it makes a pretty deadly duo.
Just my two bits though.

Thanks all for the replies. It gives me a good start for a lot of fun. Last Q: whats the difference between the a Sonic/Kin Corr or a Kin/Sonic Defender. Is it simply they have more powers from the primary pool and sooner access to those skills over the secondary pool?

I want to say as a general rule of thumb the Corruptor buffs and debuffs are about 2/3 the strength of the defender version, though it's been a while since I've dealt with the raw numbers of the game, so I could be off a bit.
