People who play crabs and hate Huntsman

I know, I know it sounds like the title of a self help book.

I have just come back from a long break from playing the game like a lot of people have and a lot has changed, however one thing hasn't changed is the people that play SOA crabs have this proclivity to put down Huntsman. At least that is my perception when I read some of these posts. Granted some just contrast Crabs and Huntsman, but a lot of crab fans put them down, and I have read heated arguments from both sides over the issue.

Personally I play both and I like my Huntsman. He's a boot in the rear, shoot first, ask questions second, lead spraying badass of the badasses. His motto is "Gun control means hitting your target."

The crab is ok. I look at the crab as a pocket MM with good aoe attacks. Both pet powers (spiderlings and disrupters,) are essential IMHO. They do ok, and don't need a whole lot of tweaking.

Those comparisons aside I want to hear from people that have a hatred of Huntsman and why they are so fanatical about it. There have been some knock down drag out fights over this topic through the years in the forums. Please keep the vitriol on both sides to a minimum. I just want to get into the psyche of some of the people that hate or put down Huntsman as a matter of course.

I love my Crab. My Bane has a secondary build as a huntsman, but I love him too.

I can't say I "hate" Huntsmen. Generally I prefer my Crab for AoE type of play, but I wouldn't consider my Huntsman sub-par.

There is really very little difference between the two. I don't really know why you only call crabs "pocket masterminds" when huntsmen only have one less potential pet.

Huntsmen's attacks are mostly smashing and lethal, while many of the crab's base attacks (suppression, channelgun) are energy. Depending on their patron pools, they also could vary like toxic or energy again. Although huntsmen have the same power pools available, I am assuming the concept would prevent you from taking many. As these damage types are resisted far less than smashing and lethal, they are superior.

As far as the rest of the class goes, it just depends on the variant. I think either way you go you will be far superior to many other ATs, but mainly given the fact that the main AoE crab attacks target less common enemy resistances is ultimately the tipping point in their favor.

Huntsmen have 3 less potential pets.

A Crab can get 6 pets: 1 Patron pet, 2 Disruptors (Summon Reinforcements) and 3 Spiderlings (Summon Spiderlings).

A Huntsman can only get 3 pets: 1 Patron and 2 Disruptors.

Since Crabs can get as many pets as a Mastermind has minions, that's why they're called "pocket masterminds."

I built my Huntsman for support, all TTs and Leadership powers. Never heard my character put down by a crab, I mostly get "thanks for the tohit and extra 30% damage".

As long as you're having fun, its your 15 bucks.

Crabs are from... um... a Crabby Place, and Huntsmen are from a Hunting Place.

Eh, I didn't want to put too much thought into the joke.

I made a SoA with the sole intention of branching, instead of playing a build that is in my opinion, sub-par to the branched roles. Quite frankly, if I ever found enjoyment out of it, I wouldn't be like some people and make a whole new character, because I don't want to play an AT more than once with the same powers.

I've never heard of this particular problem. I love my Crab Spider, he was my second 50 and was the whole reason I got my first 50. My Huntsman is now at level 45.

They're both a lot of fun and I wouldn't part with either one.

Exactly!!! Not to mention they have more firepower than a MM and don't have to take 20 minutes to augment and buff their pets. Make recharge reduction a part of your spec and whala!!! Pocket Mastermind.

I built my Huntsman for that purpose as well and when they surpass crabs when you factor that in, surveillance, build up, venom grenade, and set bonuses.

I agree its your dime and as long as your having fun.

Why is the huntsman build subpar?
