That's what I always do too. I believe in the past it was recommended to do it that way anyways. Not sure if that is still the case though.
As far as I know, the in-program updater does not function correctly. Download the installer from cohplanner.com and run it as an administrator.

You need to download and install the newest version from a website.
When I needed to do mine a pop-up came up saying not the use the updater and to download it from a website.
