Any particular error you get?
Try opening it with Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities) and see if it gives you a better error. If it says something about a background process failing try rebooting first.

it says it is unable to attach because it cannot recognize it.
You do not need a special program. If a .dmg file isn't opening, that file is in some way corrupt or damaged. One problem I have had in the past is that web sites would end up sending a file, say, compressed in some way, but with a file name that didn't reflect this.
I downloaded this straight from the CoX website though...should I just download and try again then?
Probably. If you have any more technically inclined Mac folks available locally, have one of them look at it, they might be able to spot something. I might have a shot at it if I were looking at the machine, it's hard to tell.
Wait, where did you download a 3 GB dmg file? The official ones at the CoH websites don't contain any of the game files (they patch after you launch), they should be only a few megabytes.

That's new, I haven't seen that before and will have to test it separately. Meantime, try downloading the one from ftp://client.coh.com/ and see if that behaves better.

You might want to take a look at the link you just posted. It looks to me like it contains windows style .exe programs, and another copy of the 3 GB DMG for the mac.
Looks like they updated the files as of August 10th. I'm going to have to download one this weekend and see if it behaves like it's supposed to when I run it.
Either way, the FTP site will usually have a lower download load than the web site, so you have a greater chance of a corrupted file from the web site (because the download could be interrupted etc) when a new patch comes out.

I downloaded the DMG from the web site, and it seems to mount fine. The exact size of the file in Get Info (Cmd-I):
Size: 3.9 GB on disk (3,904,177,974 bytes)
If yours is a significantly different size, it may be an incomplete download.

I downloaded the 3GB .dmg file, but my macbook pro refuses to open it! I just got this laptop yesterday, so maybe I'm missing a certain program?
