Content restrictions and rules...

I'm probably missing something obvious, but I've been a bit surprised by some of the words which have gotten descriptions rejected for "profanity". (Including a common synonym for "cheerful". Even assuming someone meant the other meaning, is that really "profanity"? The people I know who use it as a self-descriptive term don't strike me as particularly profane.)

Long story short, as part of a humorous arc, I want to do a custom faction called <Pocket D ERPers>. I'm wondering how subtle/circumspect I have to be about the content; I was assuming that overt sexual language would be a problem, but after a couple of the things the MA interface tagged as "profanity", I'm wondering whether I simply overlooked the place where they said that any and all references to the notion that humans have some way of making more humans is completely banned.

Part of the problem, of course, is being true to the source material. Having seen someone roleplaying a pimp (and yes, there were other players filling in the implied other roles), I'm concerned that if I bowdlerize this too much I'll lose all verisimilitude.

I want to be helpful here, but your willful ignorance concerning a word which has been used as a derogatory term for a very long time now makes it hard for me to deduce whether or not you're being serious.

Anyway, the MA rules are actually very strict, and go further than profanity. You can't even use one of several copyrighted names. They censor a lot of terms that you'd probably find in normal game play that no one cares about, but the Devs aren't taking any chances.

You'll simply have to be clever in your use of innuendo to get the crap past the radar, so to speak.

I am entirely serious -- while I know that some people use the term in a derogatory fashion, I also know that, many other people use that same term in a non-derogatory fashion. Read Judge Walker's ruling overturning Prop 8; in it, he uses that exact word, repeatedly. (And one source reports that he is a member of the group in question.)

It's not willful ignorance. I recognize that the word is used in an inappropriate way. So are a lot of other words.

Okay, where do I find them?

The question is, how do I find out what the intended rules are so I can alter the material not to get banned for content the moment someone reports it?

...that's a good question. I guess you just don't know a bad word until the MA flags it and says "I aint publishing this!"

I'm afraid your entire concept may be in trouble. A good rule of thumb is "if you have to ask if it's too much/bannable/etc, then it probably is".

If you really want to go through with this though, I suggest making the ERPers dialog as plain and as non-sexual as possible... then drop a clue somewhere saying that they're speaking in code or something. Or heck, just the idea of two EPRers going "So, did you catch last night's episode?" "Yes, i found it very good!" or something instead of... well, their usual types of conversation, might be funnier than any type of direct innuendo you can conceive.

The profanity filter is rather retarded. For example, I cannot use the word "facial" to mean "facial expression" because the editor assumes that I'm writing about something dirty.

Edit: And yet that same word is allowed on the forums. Go figure.

There's not much that's DIRECTLY explicit, but...

1. There's character bios that say things like "((ERP ok))", because obviously there would be.
2. There are some which hint at things without saying them.
3. Tentacle Girl gets her powers from her close relationship with tentacles. (She has Tenebrous Tentacles and the plants power that looks like it...)

There's a few things where someone who is LOOKING for dirty will almost certainly see it, but if you aren't looking for it, there's no explicit words to tell you that it's dirty. You'd have to be bringing the dirty to the table to spot that.

If the answer is "don't publish that", I can just send copies to a couple of friends who will enjoy it anyway.

The arc, BTW, focuses on purging Pocket D of bad roleplaying. The enemy factions are <Pocket D Dark Pasts>, <Pocket D ERPers>, and <Pocket D Godmoders>. But as an example, one of the characters has as his bio:

Extremely Cheerful is cheerful, happy, or possibly frolicksome. He is a real man's man, IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN AND I THINK YOU DO.
There is no sexual content there. Seriously. Not a single sexual word there. There might be a bit of suggestive material in the dialogue for "Mary Sueccubus", but... Nothing that comes within MILES of the stuff I see every day in bios in-game.

Sounds like a fantastic way to learn of new and obscure profanity

It could be worse though. I played another MMO once that wouldn't even allow words that contained other profane words inside them, including profanity from other languages.
For example, you couldn't even say "reputation", because it contained the word "puta", which is spanish for a prostitute or something like that.

I guess the problem is -- my error-bars for how likely something is to be a problem are HUGE. If I were going to just not do anything I'm unsure about, I wouldn't talk to people. EVER.

I need clear rules or explanations of what the boundaries are and why. I have NO instinct for this stuff -- brain's busted. I hate advice of the form "if you have to ask, don't", because they lead to everything being bowdlerized into nonsense and tripe.

I see where your coming from, but the problem is that if they lay down definate rules then people will just find loopholes.

I don't see why they care. If there needs to be a line, draw one, and just accept that people will do things you don't like sometimes.

I mean, think about the ESRB "T" rating. There's rules that define that, and they don't seem to have exploded.
