Coh on new computer

This may be a silly question, im 90% sure it is.

I just got a new laptop and I was wondering if I could save all my Coh data and what not on a disk and upload it to the new laptop, or do I have to redownload it.

If I can, Is it faster to do it that way? Or is it the same amount of time?

Yep. You can copy everything in your CoH directory over. Just make sure to copy cohupdater.exe to your desktop or somewhere and run it from there, then select the directory you copied everything else to as the install directory.

Yes, just literally copy the entire directory. Once you get to the new system, copy the updater to your desktop, then run it, and once it starts downloading, close it. Now, copy over your backed up installation over the new installation. Once that completes, you should be able to start the updater normally and it should work fine.

It's far, far, far, far, far, far faster to just backup your installation. As in, 30 minutes vs 12+ hours (+- 12 hours).

Here's another way to do it:

1. Copy your entire CoH directory (usually C:/Program Files/City of Heroes) to the same location on your new machine.

2. On the old computer, open up the Registry Editor (Start -> Run and type "regedit") and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Cryptic/Coh.

3. Right-click on the "Coh" folder and select "export," then pick a name and location to save the registry settings. Copy the exported file to your new machine.

4. On the new machine, double-click that exported registry file (ends with .reg, remember?) to import the settings into the new machine's registry.

5. Create a desktop shortcut for CoH on your new machine, just like you had on the old one.

6. The game should start up just fine, and it'll even remember almost all your settings from your old install. You might be able to tweak graphics settings if your new hardware is a lot better, but at least importing the registry information will save you from having to go in and reset a lot of stuff.

Hey I am also having an issue on a new laptop, my other one broke on me. So now I am trying to redownload everything but it is just stuck on the piggs and not going anywhere, is there anyplace I can go to get the directory?

Try not to threadjack (it makes it harder to figure out what on earth is going on and help you).

Unless you can access the HD on your old computer, manually made a backup somewhere, or wait until Going Rogue box comes to a store and buy it, you're going to need to download most of the game (even the Architect Edition discs will be fairly out of date). The pigg's folder is pretty much 99.9% of the size of the game, so it will take a while. Up to 12 hours is fairly reasonable (I'd suggest just leaving it on over night one night, or starting the updater first thing in the morning). Generally, it's best to largely ignore the estimated completion time given by the updater (it's usually very wrong, especially when the times given are larger than the current age of the universe).

Someone could upload the various files somewhere, but I don't think there's anywhere that'll let you upload that much data for free (plus, it'd take a while).
