Water, with Water Effects High & Ultra High, flash with new patch.
As the title says, since today's patch most (or all?) water in the game flashes when my Water Effects settings are set to High or Ultra High.
System specs as follows. CPU: AMD Phenom II x6 1095T Graphics card: AMD ATI Radeon HD 5870 RAM: 8 GB No I haven't tried updating the drivers yet, however I do know that the problem appeared with the latest patch. |
I checked for a driver... already had the newest.
I verified files... didn't fix it.
I turned the option off and then back on... didn't fix it.
But then I turned occlusion off and on again, or one of the OTHER options like the shadowmapping or something, and somehow the water flickering suddenly stopped. The weird part is I am back to the same exact settings I had before it happened, but it no longer happens. I have not encountered it again since.
It's worth a shot anyway. I just logged in today with no issues yet either. Keep it on Ultra while you try messing with some of the other settings until it stops flashing, then reset it all back to the way you like it.
Good luck!
Thanks for the tip. I played with the settings and it seems to be a conflict between Environment Reflections and Water Effects. Oddly it went away after I turned the reflections up. It comes back again though if I turn them down. Quite a nuisance really...
Between the Loyalists and Resistance, I'd be tempted to support Praetorian Hamidon.
One side uses mind police and will "disappear" you and the other uses poison gas and bombs on civilians. Hamidon? He'll just have a tree eat you. Much simpler. If we're all going to be oppressed and/or killed by someone, it might as well be the walking trees. At least they don't speak in annoying code or doublespeak. They just devour you. |

Why not just keep the reflection on high anyway? I don't think it changes the fps much.
I have an ATI5770, with settings in the high end, and it happens for me as well.
My experience is that it is random, i.e. sometimes when I log in, it is there, and if I then restart CoH it is gone. Logging out to login screen doesn't change anything.
I just switched Environment Reflections to from High to Ultra and it stopped. My Water Effects was already on Ultra

I posted something recently to the same effect. Running a 5870. One other player posted that a reboot will often fix this.
He/she reported seeing it more often after playing other games or something on their system prior to loading up CoX.
Not sure about me, but I *think* I would encounter it more after visiting more graphically intense locations like parts of the Isles or Praetoria.
I followed the advice, rebooted and problem cleared up.
Either way, it's interesting that it seems like ATI 5700 & 5800 customers seem to be the only few reporting this on occasion. And to confirm with the OP, for me it is only when I have the dynamic water reflections turned on either the highest or second highest notch that I see this strobing.
