Champion! I need your help on a personal issue!
First place I'd look is your SG and talk to Starfire. He's a DJ, eh? After that, I'd probably talk to Dazz Marvelous, Miz Nibbles, and Fayellon as they're online DJs for KJSR.net, which do quite a bit o' CoX events. Or Caperadio. Those guys are solid too.

Cobalt has made great suggestions. I'd also highly recommend Dazz, as he has quite a good handle on musical knowledge.
But before you go on a quest for the 'gems' of mainstream music, have you considered the age group of your audience? Perhaps if most people attending are children of the 80s, you might be good sticking with the retro favorites. Just a thought.

I posted a reply on our SG forums.
I am a "club" DJ, not a weddings/events guy, but I know what makes people want to get off their butts and participate.
I just need to know some basic information: general age range of attendees, duration of event, "mood" of event (no Eiffel 65 or Cannibal Corpse at a funeral is a good rule of thumb), general musical tastes of the attendees, etc.
Let me know; I'm happy to help.

Hi Dinah! I'd be more then happy to help out! I'd just need to know a few more specifics about the party and the audience. As others have said it TOTALLY depends on your audience when it comes to what is being played. I'd also suggest maybe having a pen and paper handy at the event and let people attempt to make requests. I know people love REQUESTING songs at parties. Then they get to say "OMG! This is my song! Let's go DANCEEEEEE! WOOOOOO!" But lemme know what you are trying to accomplish and I'd be delighted to help. As the others have nicely suggested, yes I have a good range of music understanding but I think beyond all that the experience I've had the past year catering to hundreds of champions has helped me gain insight in what can be played (plus they can tolorate some of my crap now too!)!

I wish I could tell you more about the audience, but I'm afraid I'm not sure myself. For this reason I am sticking with "Top 40", (with a side order of retro), and I suppose I'm looking for a list of "don't be caught dead without these tunes!"
Wish I could help but my music tastes are kinda out there so good luck and hope it's fun.
I'll always be a "Champion" at heart. My server away from home.

I was an assistant to a wedding DJ, back in '91 and '92. The first thing he did was find out what the newlyweds wanted to hear, and took it from there. He usually took their musical tastes and then added some of his constant use songs. Back then, the staples for him were Achy Breaky Heart (there is now a special place in Hell for Billy Ray for me having to listen to that song so many times), House of Pain's "Jump Around", and a few others I can't recall. Sorry I can't be of more help, but it looks like you've already got some great leads and assistance.

One of the links I gave her was to billboard (and at40, etc.).
I also mentioned that one of the things I used to do back when I toured was to go to the websites of the local radio station(s). That will tell you what's popular specific to your location and taste. That way you can always drop (or remix) something the locals love.
Just take a deep breath and do a little research. : )

Pretty cool, Dinah.
I used to do those kinds of mixes all the time. It gets much easier to do stuff like that once you go digital and beat grid (and tone bank) all your tracks.

I would imagine that what grandma Dinah and her friends will listen to hasn't been top 40 for a number of years, Star...

When looking for advice, I always hit the Champion forums. You folks have always been a well of knowledge and I always get sent in the right direction.
Here is my problem. I have the equipment, and the music, but no professional DJ for a "Stag and Doe" party I am throwing for my RL CoH friend, Darkfyre. (not a forum reg, but a member of my SG). What I need to know is, where can I find a "setlist" for songs played by a DJ at events. A suggested setlist containing the "right" songs to play to keep people happy, drinking and spending! I have searched the interweb and can't seem to find this, and it dumbfounds me that it isn't available.
What songs are a MUST!? What songs (althought populair on the billboard charts) fail to translate to an event? Since I am a child of the 80's, the "retro" section is covered, but the rest of the event (being top 40) is still undecided.
If you can help me find this "DJ resource", or simply wish to recommend songs to be played that go over well at these functions, please let me know.
Oh, and the event is this coming weekend, so Please help me ASAP!
