Is Ill/Kin do-able?
I started an Ill/FF and and Ill/Therm, neither is hitting my happy spot. I was wondering if an Ill/Kin is a doable combo - I generally like /kin a lot...
The only downside I see to this combo is that I won't be able to take advantage of Containment as much - I have very few damaging attacks, and a lot of my powers (like my Deceive) don't offer Containment. |
The biggest downside to a /kin controller of any flavor is balancing control duties with the kinetics. Kin is a set which if played to the max can occupy your entire attention for the duration of any team mission. Since there is almost never a better power to fire off than the next kin buff that is recharged, and the increased rate at which teams move through a mission with kin powers at work, little time is left to do anything else. Kin controllers have to discipline themselves to ease off their secondary and focus on using their primary first, or they might run the risk of cutting in to the enjoyment of playing a controller.
Don't worry about lack of containment for illusion. Judicious use of Deceive more than makes up for it. A couple of bosses will do a lot more damage on your behalf than contained controller attacks, and will allow you to move quicker through spawns in greater safety.
Have fun with your Ill/Kin!

Ill/kin is a very doable combo, It was the second toon I made many many years ago and I have never regretted it. As far as containment goes, I don't pay much attention to it on this character only because once you get Fulcrum Shift (coupled with siphon power) it isn't as necessary. This build is so doable imo, that my ill/kin is still running on SOs and handles himself just fine. I don't know all the particulars of your build yet (or what level your toon is) but damage shouldn't be a problem with pets and spectral wounds, and will become less of a problem later on with epic powers. As far as taking the concealment pool for IOs, perhaps try just getting those IOs into the concealment powers in illussion already. If my other comp wasn't broken I could send you my intended IO build for my ill/kin, which I think offers a good amount of def and recharge to make certain powers perm, but as with any build I always encourage lots of experimentation to see what you like best. (I hope I was some sort of help)
It's very doable. One of my oldest characters is an ill/kin. The only (and I really do mean only) drawback is that sometimes your phantasm will cause knockback when you are trying to fire off transfusion or transference, but it doesn't happen enough to cause deaths.
Illusion is a great primary, and Kinetics is a great secondary, so the combo is good, but there is a lack of synergy. The only real boost that Kinetics gives to Illusion is (a) siphon speed will help PA recharge faster, and (b) Fulcrum Shift/Siphon Power will buff your damage and Phantasm's damage. As previously mentioned, you have to deal with Phanty knocking back your siphon targets periodically.
You can't buff Phantom Army, so your great Kin buffs are wasted on them. (One of the reasons that Ill/Rad is so popular and so good - Rad is the only secondary with a Recharge buff and debuffs to make Phantom Army better.)
For the most part, Containment isn't a problem with an Illusionist. Why? No AoE damage powers until the APP sets. You mostly focus on single target damage with Blind-Spectral Wounds. Once you get to the APP sets, you have a great single target attack chain of Blind-SW-APP Blast-SW.
If you are looking for a combo with Illusion, I prefer Ill/Rad, Ill/Storm and Ill/TA over Ill/Kin (in that order). Ill/Cold may be a very good combo, too, but I haven't yet taken a */Cold very far.
LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

I've solo'ed a few of the lower end GM's with my ill/kin (Paladin, Babbage, Kraken). It's certainly a capable combination for single target damage. It's also a nice contributor on teams with PA for tanking, some handy controls, stealth capable for TF's, and some nice buffing. The only area that I find it lags behind in is AoE damage, but the right APP helps out there.
I started an Ill/FF and and Ill/Therm, neither is hitting my happy spot. I was wondering if an Ill/Kin is a doable combo - I generally like /kin a lot, I know that having SB and Fulc will get me on teams, and I like the Idea of SiphonSpeed + Haster + IOs making my Holds and other cool powers recharge ultrafast so I can spam em and lock down lots. Not to mention anything that lowers the recharge on Blind is good. Plus any baddie I have locked down becomes a nice anchor for Transfusion and Transference.
The only downside I see to this combo is that I won't be able to take advantage of Containment as much - I have very few damaging attacks, and a lot of my powers (like my Deceive) don't offer Containment.
Edit: I also think I might plan to take Tactics from Leadership and maybe Assault (although FS might make Assault unnecessary.) Might also take Stealth and Grant Invis - not for the powers, but as a place to stick LotGs and RedFortunes. For Epics, I am liking the Psi with IndomWill (Which should be perma-able), Mind over Body, and Psi Tornado - even WoC could be a fun level 49 power.
Other notes:
My playstyle is PvE only, never PvP. I play one character at a time, levelling him from 1 to 50, at which point I permanently shelve him and start a new character. (I am all about the 1-50 journey and enjoying it over and over). I have played since beta and have most of the Vet Badges including Sands of Mu, Nemmy Staff, Blackwand, 5+ Respecs, and Travel Power@ level 6. I have almost unlimited Influence and Infamy from all the years of playing - although I never buy Purples because I never play characters after hitting 50. I often buy LotG's, Numina's, Miracles, the Anti-KD IOs and a +Stealth travel IO - which slotting into SuperSpeed gives PvE invisibility basically.
Any thoughts?
