Game keeps crashing.

Any ideas on what's going on? It crashes randomly and an error report window pops up afterward. This happens about twice every hour, which is extremely frustrating.

Also, if anyone knows a fix to this problem, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Oh, sure. I turned all the graphics down just to see if it would fix it, but it didn't:

update xp to service pack 3. that should help.

Posted

Might want to check for a sound card driver update too. Although with a onboard sound card there might not be anything more recent.

and try to free up a little space in your hard drive. i try not to let mine drop under 25% free. do a disc clean up and defrag also.

Ok, problem solved. Don't really know what happened exactly but I was getting tired of crashing once every 20 seconds.

I reformatted and have been online for 5 or so hours without crashing at all. It could be the whole hard drive space thing or it could've been something completely different.

If you're crashing a lot, maybe just think about reformatting since that worked for me.

That's a lot like using a chainsaw to perform laser eye surgery It should really be the last option you consider if all else fails, since generally it's just an issue of outdated software, or some other software conflicting (or, a bunch of malware on the machine screwed with the system's stability).

spine, it doesn't sound like you tried any of the things we suggested. did you? a reformat is the absolute last thing you want to do as kitsune said. let us know what you tried at least please.

Actually, I did try updating my video card driver. I did try freeing up more hard drive space. I did try downloading spyware removal along with a different anti-virus. I tried a registry cleaner as well.

I did not upgrade to SP3 and I did not download a later audio driver, however, even after I reformatted, I'm still at SP2 and I'm still with the default audio driver and everything is still fine...so it's definitely NOT the Service Packs and the audio driver.

It's just a lot of work trying to pinpoint exactly what's going wrong. It probably took a lot more time and effort to find the right drivers, download them..along with other anti-spyware and antivirus and registry cleaner.

Reformatting took me approximately 20 minutes. Another 10 minutes to reinstall all the drivers and another 30 minutes to reinstall CoH/CoV as well as downloading all the patches. Everything was pretty much done within an hour. Granted, I didn't have anything else important on my main hard drive, since I put mostly everything else on my external.

Upgrading to Service Pack 3 could have fixed the issue. Also, you REALLY SHOULD UPGRADE TO SERVICE PACK 3. In one week, Microsoft is END OF LIFING SP2 (which means ZERO updates, including security updates!). Service pack 2 was released six years ago, and 3 was released two years ago.

Staying on SP2 is just putting yourself at risk.

A lot of people generally have a lot of state on their computer If I reformatted my computer, it'd be weeks before I was really completely up and running again.

^^this 1 billion times over. you absolutely must keep your operating system UP TO DATE. if you don't, you are asking for trouble that may not be fixable.

Bah, does anyone have a link for me to download SP3? I can't get it from the microsoft website.

Also, what kind of risks are we talking about? Yea, I know there are tons of security updates, but I don't really visit any insecure websites. I've tried to download security updates before by using the Automatic Updates, but my computer always run crappy after installing all those security updates for some reason...anyone know what's up with this?

Edit: Found this website, can anyone confirm that this is actually legit and not some form of malware?
http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows...ce-pack-3.html

Also, this website says that if I'm using an AMD chip, I MUST download a special hotfix prior to installing SP3? I've never heard of anything like this either so if someone can shed some light on this matter for me, that'd be great.

First of all I have to comment on this. There is no such thing as a secure website.

Second. Yes that is a legitimate download site. For all windows updates all it does is link you directly to the official windows download site. It's a good place to bookmark if you are one of those people who can't manage to navigate their way through the never ending morass that is the official site.

As to the hotfix being necessary I really can't say. That bug popped up two years ago when sp3 was first released. It's possible, even extremely likely that Microsoft fixed it since then or even that the newer AMD chipsets aren't vulnerable. Even back when it first came out it wasn't affecting all AMD chips, just a significant portion of them.

Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!

so no reply on my post and problem then?

Well, I am not a COH Helper analyst but can say I have an evga 9800GTX+ for bout a year now and runs CoX with plenty of eye candy no problem. My rig is fairly similar to yours as well OS wise and hardware wise. May just be coincidence you have 2 computers crashing and both have a 9800 card. May want to post a HJT log as well for the gurus to see if maybe some other issue is the culprit.

i have a 9800 gt and do not experience the problems. maybe do a disc clean up and defrag? also try reseting your modem and router.
