Do you get Tough with your Tank?

Glad to see most Tankers do get Tough. For some reason, I just don't feel like Weave is really all that important to me. I usually get Tough and stop there...never really bothered with the extra 5% defense that Weave offers and didn't need the extra endurance usage either.

From INV perspective: If you run purely a DEF build and want to reach the soft-cap, getting Tough and Weave is pretty mandatory. If you want to max your RES to 90%, Tough is mandatory... so unless you are happy somewhere in between those two schools of thought, I'd say taking Tough never hurt anybody :-)

I'd take it on my WP tank as well to help mitigate incoming damage to supplement the HP regen.

All in all, Tough has way more pros than cons.

Endurance cost is disproportionately high.

Also, it's two less power picks that could be used for something else. Whether you take Boxing or Kick, they are both substandard attacks.

Not all Tanker primary sets are created equal. Some are great at some things and suck at others. Not all players playing tanks are equal either. Keep this in mind when deciding to take powers like tough and/or weave. You think stone armor needs tough? certainly not after lv32 if you take granite armor and use it primarily in battle. Does a shield defense tank need tough or weave? My shield defense tank does just fine without them. My invuln tank on the other hand has tough. It gives great, i mean GREAT, S/L resists that work really well with the other invuln toggles. And my invuln tank is my main hero and have tanked with him just fine for years. His only weakness being heavy elemental or fire/cold dmg and of course psi dmg. Would you take tough/weave on a dark armor tank. This is laughable as I cringe at the thought of so many toggles. Brave is the player who plays a dark armor tank with 10 toggles. Can be done but I wouldn't wanna deal with it.

Yes that is only 3 sets but elec and fire are both resist sets. get tough if you wanna 'tank'. Ice is a defense set. I plan to skip tough on him. I find my defenses are just fine without an added toggle. Willpower.. hmmm, i'd say either way is ok for this set. It has regen/def/resist in its set. I guess if you had the 3 power slots you could take up to weave.

As far as weave goes, you need 3 power slots to even think about taking it. That is the problem with tier 4 power pool powers. Some are great but you need to sacrifice elsewhere in your build. I would say for anyone really wanting weave and can't sacrifice elsewhere... Put some IO sets in your powers that will give you the bonuses weave gives. weave with a defense IO in it gives 6.3% defense. You can easily combo platter 2-4 powers with sets that will make up for that. Maybe not across the board but certanly where you need def the most. That 6.3 sounds great to me but the power sacrifice is just too high on most of my tank builds.

I've had good success with Tough on several tanks, but clearly the powerset is going to have a huge influence on its usefulness / needfulness.

On Invul its gravy and I took it very late on a near-50 character just to RES cap without having to work at it, and may take it on a tweener tank eventually if I ever bother to level the character.

On Dark I have it on my "main" build where it does have a large impact on my ability to team tank and solo scrank. I don't have it on the more aggressive attack heavy alternate build. I can tell you for a fact that the difference of Tough (and Weave) between the two has a big impact on survivability and END management pro and con respectively. The version with Tough is the better version by far, but I've also focused a lot more influnce on it so its hard to pin the difference all on the Fighting Pool.

On Shield, lower level tank, I don't have it yet but will pick it up before I clear the 30's.

On Willpower I haven't felt the need for it yet (low 30's), but after I've finished filling in all the blanks with more important powers it's definitely a consideration for future picks. I'll wait and see how the tier-9 impacts my general survivability as I march towards 35 before deciding if I want to enter the Fighting Pool at this juncture. 38 is footstomp, so Tough is competing with an Epic Power at 41 as the earliest opportunity and I don't think it's going to win that particular battle. Realistically even if I do decide I need it, Tough will probably be a final power selection; its possible I might go 47 Tough 49 Weave, IO mule, profit -- and clearly if Ive made it that far without I probably don't need it for every day adventuring. As the Zen Master says, "we'll see".

I haven't piloted a character with any of the other Tanker primaries past 6 or 8, so I can't really speak to them. On paper, I think I'd plan to take it on the weaker elemental sets to supplement.
