A Thought on Hockey, Bandwagon Jumping and GR

I would never rejoice at a man's death, but let's face it...that team was never going to treat its players, its former players, and its fanbase with any sort of respect while Bill Wirtz was still alive. The Blackhawks are an Original 6 team. The city of Chicago and the NHL in general deserved better than Bill Wirtz.

Ok, I am sitting here in Chicago listening to a spirited discussion about how the 3500 fans that actually went to Blackhawks games when they sucked are somehow better fans and more deserving of a playoff ticket than anybody else and the fact that they cannot afford a playoff ticket is a crime against humanity. They literally hate/begrudge anyone who wasn't standing in an empty stadium during the "dark days". It's quite entertaining

Nevermind that their old owner, Dollar Bill Wirtz (may he rest in peace), for years refused to show home games on TV because that would not be fair to people who bought season tickets. I have never seen a more hated owner.(Think PvP changes for hate level then times that by 10)

But anyway, this whole bandwagon jumping arguement got me thinking. What if GR becomes City of's Stanley Cup run??? What if we go from 3500 die hards to a packed stadium and 900,000 homes tuned in, in Chicago alone, for game 5.

Will we hate/begrudge all the new comers??? Will we say they do not deserve the goodness of our beloved game because they were not here when things were not so good??

Personally I am hoping for a happy go lucky new comer vid like this one:

Enjoy.
Peter Pocklington is the most hated owner in NHL history, the man traded Gretzey, Edmonton still hasn't forgiven him.

ESPN's "30 at 30" series dedicated one of the episodes to that whole story, and it was rather fascinating. Gretzky wasn't exactly free of blame in that whole scenario -- he essentially forced the trade. Yeah, the GM got all of the blame, but there was definitely blood on the Great One's hands (which he admitted in the various interviews).

If you can find a rerun of it, I'd highly recommend it. Actually...so far I'd recommend any of the "30 at 30" episodes.

AND, GO BLACKHAWKS!

And a hearty pat on the back to the Flyers. It was a great series.

But I don't see how I can be wrong. MMOs have fluctuating populations during their lifetimes. At some point an MMO will reach its peak population. It may continue to fluctuate up and down beyond that, but by definition it will never return to its peak. That's why it's a peak. Because it's a peak.

Do I need to draw you a graph?
Think again, DARKGOB!

(Sorry, just felt like a very heroic thing to say.)

Anyway. Seriously. It's worth considering Paragon Studio's sleeve. And not just their sleeve, but the ace they have up their sleeve. Which would be popular culture. Super heroes in popular culture are rising up in the collective consciousness again, just like they have every time there was war, the threat of war or the threat of an arms race, or an economic slump (and right now we seem to have everything all over the place). Just ask the distributors, they'll back me up!

Much like Captain America came along in World War II to save the comics from one of their slumps, Statesman will come along to save super-powered MMOs from their slump. Okay (hahaha), maybe not Statesman. Positron. Let's say Positron. And War Witch. And if DC and Marvel provide the sort of "competition" that Champions Online has (LOLOLOLOL), I think we'll be getting the brunt of that MMO-subscribing collective consciousness.
