Mind/Storm guide by queo_Lita
Under reconstruction
Hey good guide, although I don't necessarily agree with it all. For instance, total domination is a must have in my view and with enough global recharge you can easily get it the cooldown much lower.
However I will agree that Mind/Storm is a great combination. I think there are aspects of it that put people off, but when you actually play it ingame you realise there are so many other tactics and possiblities and that its very powerful. In essence it is a set that solos very well right from the word go and is also amazing on teams.
I would say that for a newbie you might add a bit more information into the starting powers. I always look at guides as a decent one-stop-shop for getting into an AT and powerset combo, one I might no nothing about. So writing things which are obvious to you but may not be to a complete novice makes sense (like that Mesmerize is a Sleep and if you fire off Levitate after it it will do double damage). Explaining the concept of Containment in general makes sense too, as do things like how to hold bosses.
Saying "It's discussed elsewhere, I have nothing to add" will sorta encourage novices to go elsewhere to find the info, which sorta defeats the purpose of a guide and can alienate some of your potential reader-base.
Thank you Carnifax_NA, I will revise it. I guess with me not posting links it's a really, really good idea.
Also, Peacemoon- I agree with you about being able to solo easy and team well. You just have to know how not to go overboard, eh? I'd love to hear how your Mind/Storm differentiates; or where you would do otherwise.
As with Carnifax, IMO this isn't so much a guide as, "how I like to play Mind/Storm," which, I suppose you can call a guide, but I'd think some more comprehensive information might be useful. Maybe rename is at as "Mind/Storm tactical guide"?
Related thought, you're also assuming ppl know the basics of controlling, i.e. differences bet. immobs, holds, sleeps, etc, which frankly may be a valid assumption, but then you should warn this is an intermediate guide for ppl who have the general info down and just want some advice on playing a specific combo. You do state in your intro that you'll only talk about stuff that you find interesting or of which you can provide a fresh perspective, but if you're going to do that, I think you should go into quite a bit more detail than, "I find X useful." The only power you go into some good detail, IMO, is Thunderclap, and you skim over, or ignore altogether some key components of other powers. To give you an example:
35- Tornado - Another power to use on AVs, another power that can be a team killer. In this set, very easy to scatter a mob and ruin your team. I don't use it unless only one enemy is left and I've calculated the risks. I know that it stacks stun, but really, really unusable in this set. Undermined Defenses: Def-Debuff/Rech/End, Def-Debuff/Rech, Def-Debuff/End, Def-Debuff |
Sorry if you think I'm being overly critical, but I'm assuming you want some honest feedback before posting to the faqs section. As it is, I think your "guide" is to vague to be of use to newbies and not nearly enough detail for intermediate players. Experts will likely just argue up & down the list for choices and slotting (like Tornado above and your skipping of Mass Dom).
An Offensive Guide to Ice Melee
I agree with Dave. You have written up your build and how you like to play the set, but not given enough information to let people understand how the powers work, why you slotted things the way you did and why someone might want to do things differently.
Not every guide has to be as excessively long as the two guides I wrote, but I think what you have is a "here's my build" post rather than a guide to the powersets.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate that. No- all are valid comments, with some very vailid facts.
This lacks on being a guide also because I was very shy about posting it. As of now it'll be in revision and I will put down all that I think one needs to know/understand.

I would say that a powerset guide should usually be written for someone who is either fairly new to the game or at least new to the powersets being used. I used the information from Red Tomax's City of Data and Paragonwiki a lot in doing my guides, as well as information that a lot of other good people had gathered. Then I added my own insights and experience.
I have gotten a lot of positive comments, especially about my Ill/Rad guide. People seem to like the fact that I provided suggestions for leveling up, as well as for several variations on a final build. People liked a lot of my strategy suggestions, and explanations of how powers work so that they can use them more effectively.

Since this guide is still quite incomplete/not-a-guide-yet, it's currently under revision.
