Would it be better to farm aiming to get purples, or for overall inf?

I would suppose that depends whether you're trying to get purples, or just a lot of influence. If you're trying for purples, it varies with the drop rates. A particularly unlucky run might see you with no purples at all from doing it, and thus an overall loss in profitability. But a lucky run might see you gain multiple purples. Basically, I dont' think either one is going to uniformly be more profitable every time you do it.

Depends on your luck. I've been doing a few hours of farming a week for over a year now and not one purple to show for it. I'm on a mac so no herostats for me, but gotta be well beyond 100k level 50+ kills at this point. On the other hand, I picked up three in a few months of playing regular missions on my first two 50s neither of which farm.
