Im New
Welcome to the game!
When you first log on, the servers are listed in order of their populations, from least to most.
Freedom and Virtue have the most. I'd say Virtue is the better one for beginners since it's the unofficial Role-Playing server.
As someone else said, IGNORE the AE (Architect Entertainment) contact in Atlas Park for now. Doing that will give you a false sense of the game.

Also, the servers are all down right now as they add a patch, so don't be too concerned if the game doesn't launch for a bit. Should be back online within an hour, probably.

I started with a Dominator as my first character, despite being told it would be hard. I ended up loving her.
As for servers, I do recommend Virtue as I tend to have my most fun times there. I also have a lot of characters on Triumph made back when Triumph was active... but I rarely run into people there anymore.
As far as what to play, take people's advice. Scrappers hero-side and Brutes villain-side are the easiest to play and learn. I'd steer clear of Blasters for a while, though, at least until you get a good grip of some of the finer points of gameplay, because they're liable to get you killed if you so much as slip up and take a certain degree of situational awareness to play right that is just unfair to ask from a new player. |
I think that by starting off with the "easy" ATs, you take the game for granted and don't learn the finer points you speak of. Then when you take the leap to the "harder" AT, i.e. blasters, you go *splat* and get mad at the game because you can't take 15 bad guys at once.
That's my 2 inf. YMMV. :-)
To the OP, heed the advice of the forumites, but play the game the way YOU want. This game is awesome and can be played so many different ways. Have fun and don't be afraid to ask specific questions. Some of us have been here so long that simple questions from new players take US back to our first days of playing. I miss the ooh and aah moments.
And welcome to the game!
Welcome, RazzleTazzle! Hope to see you in the City.
As far as advice, after you've played one character to 10 or so, have fun trying out a totaly different character (archetype, powersets, etc.). You might be surprised that you like something new better. That's what happened to me.
No recommendations, just try and see what you like. And have fun!

But I showed them, and nobody's laughing at me now!

If you'd like some personalized help, look into the Mentor Project. It is a collection of people on all servers, covering most time zones, who have pledged to help mentor new players. Whether you just want to ask some questions, go on a quick tour, or actually be paired up with a "big brother/big sister" for a while, the Mentor Project can help.

Robots/Force Fields is one of the most effective Mastermind combos in the game...because it has natural synergy. You have Force Field buffs. The Protector Bots also have Force Field buffs. They stack. They stack real well. So yeah, if you're going with a Mastermind for an early character, that's a good choice.
Masterminds can be tricky to control, though, particularly when you have a whole bunch of pets at later levels. Probably the most important thing is to figure out a control scheme that works for you. A lot of players like to use keybinds for their pet controls, though that's not necessary or required - it's just a popular way.
The conventional wisdom is that scrappers and brutes are the easiest characters for beginners to learn, because they're durable and do lots of damage. Also, their playstyle is more straightforward. But that's conventional wisdom. If melee doesn't work out for you, don't be afraid to try...whatever seems coolest to you.

Howdy, howdy, hey, hey! Welcome to the game!
I've been with the game for over five years now, and I still love it. I take things a bit slower then I used to, but really, I'm just pacing myself to get pumped for Going Rogue. When I first joined, Infinity was my server. Became my home. Loved it.

You're in for a treat with this game. It's just hella fun to play. I toy with other MMOs on occasion, but I always come back here, and quickly. Six years later, I think I'm man enough to say I have a problem.
A Mastermind is my most favorite of the villain classes because it's unique. The combo you picked is great (I have a bots/traps named Supreme Soviet on Freedom server, myself), but knowing the knack of playing an MM can take a while. That you made it your first toon should make your learning curve interesting to observe.
I'd suggest also rolling a hero and trying out the "good" side as well. You have the best of both worlds here, good or evil. Depending on your server, you may encounter low population issues (traditionally, villains are less popular than heroes), so if that's the case, don't get too discouraged. Infinity's got a good crew over there. I run with Freedom (alternately the most populous server alongside Virtue, and we're all about playing like mad, mad berserkers with a gimped leg), so I never have teaming issues, but you'll come to find that every server has a population flavor. Try each server out for 5-10 levels and see which one meet your personality best.
I didn't see it mentioned, so I'll mention it here. The website paragonwiki.com is an excellent source for all topics concerning this game. There are others, but this one's easily the most comprehensive one out there. If you have questions, start there! If you STILL have questions, c'mon over to the forums and ask away.
Looking forward to your participation in this community. Take care, and don't be a stranger.

PS: Someone already mentioned the "Mentor Project". That's a player-built resource of which I think you should take advantage. Check it out, and get your own personal trainer for the game.

Scrapper's are imo the most forgiving AT for a new player. I'd recommend giving spines/regen a shot (good damage, good area damage, and excellent self heals). If the powers/slotting are confusing, checkout the Scrapper section for some build ideas
