CoH is going to be around a long time
I think the best case scenario is City of Heroes being supplanted by its own successor, to be honest. There was another thread where someone mentioned the possibility of CoH and a potential CoH2 (even if it's not called that) running side-by-side, but the game engine is old and, let's be honest, was not created when the game's dev team was at its peak (to be fair, the current dev team also has the benefit of hindsight, but the game started off with some weird design decisions). There comes a point when you can only pile on so much new tech before you have to move on.
"You don't lose levels. You don't have equipment to wear out, repair, or lose, or that anyone can steal from you. About the only thing lighter than debt they could do is have an NPC walk by, point and laugh before you can go to the hospital or base." -Memphis_Bill
We will honor the past, and fight to the last, it will be a good way to die...
Think of it as passing the torch. Everything has to move forward, and when the time comes for CoX to move forward then I'll be there to see it along. I'm fine with a sequel. Hell, I think that a long while after The Coming Storm is released we'll see a transformed CoX universe in the form of a sequel.
But yes, CoX still has a long life to live yet.
It wouldn't surprise me if Co*2 is the next major thing after GR. Two years, max. New engine, expanded scope. Probably with the ability to transfer characters over (not directly, but you'll wind up with a character that has the same name, appearance, and stuff). The old game will run for a time, but I don't think the two will run concurrent forever a la EQ 1 and 2.
As far as "superhero" online games go, I agree that there's not a whole lot of competition, and you've pretty much nailed why. However it certainly does have serious competition approaching, and I daresay the people who play this game are also apt to check out some of those too as several are NOT the same ol' fantasy stuff. A very abbreviated list would include SWTOR, TSW, and WoDO. Paragon Studios cannot rest on its laurels, and I guarantee you its new boss (however the relationship is defined) won't let them anyway.
I was thinking when it comes to super hero online games City of Heroes will be king for a long time. CO is ok but has no where near the content this game has and is still to laggy for my tast. Marvel is makeing a kiddie super hero online game so thats out. and I hear DC gonna be free to play but I might be wrong.
So as stated above I think this game will be king of the super hero online games for a long time. even though its out dated. Thoughts?
