Slow Video feedback(not lag)

Hello, I am running a Frankenstein box that i keep upgrading as things get old and/or break. I have had my current MB for about 3 years now (biostar with a n-force 4 chipset). Every time i would lose power or have a power surge it would mess up the playability of CoH upon rebooting. The game will play and function normally but be in slow motion. When i type the showfps command it gives me a normal reading. This problem would normally go away when i would re-seat the video card(i have used 3 video cards with this MB and it has happened with each) but for some reason my problem is not being resolved. With further diagnostics i figured out that when the box is plugged straight into the wall outlet, it functions fine. No slowdown what so ever but the moment i plugged it back into the surge(or any other surge) it does the same slow motion thing. There are also times when i press the power buttons and nothing happens, there are also times where it will turn on but give me no video and most of the time it just works. Im thinking it might be an inconsistency with the PSU but i would love a second opinion from people with more experience. Thanks!

Would also like to add that any other program, game or device functions fine all the time.
(This was posted on the Player question forum as well)

Maybe the surge protector is damaged? Make sure it's an actual Surge Protector, and not just a power strip. There is a BIG difference.

Personally, I'd go with a UPS instead. That's an Uninterruptible Power Supply that protects you from surges as well as runs on a battery backup when the power goes out. It's a great investment.

I would invest in an UPS as well, can't go wrong there. From what you have described I wouldn't be surprised if it was your PS. If you just have a power strip then a surge could screw up all kinds of things in your PC.

It is a protector as for it does have a fuse in it. Also i have tried other protectors but they were all from my house. So maybe there is a pattern or maybe i am trying real hard to not realize the fact that i have to spend money.

Maybe the power in your house is not very reliable to begin with... especially if you are having problems with power outages and surges. That's even more reason to have a UPS.

In my case, I used to live in an old old house that had fuses instead of circuit breakers. The hallway, my bedroom and the bathroom were all on the same fuse. If I had my TV, DVD player, Computer, and Air Conditioner running, turning the light on in the bathroom would sometimes cause the fuse to blow. I pretty much had to decide "TV or Computer", not both. And God forbid if my girlfriend decided to use a hair dryer while I was downloading something. haha

Anyway, after expressing my concerns about the outdated power in the house, the owners (who I was/am friends with) decided to finally upgrade to a fuse box and a more stable incoming line from the street. They also split the lines between each room and even included a separate one just for the air conditioner. The problem went away, but I'll stil be using a UPS no matter where I move to.

Good thought but i do have a circuit breaker in this house. We get the surges once every 6 or so months or so and on top of that all the rest of my devices work out of the wall or plugged into any strip. (monitor, tv, ps3, wall fan, alaram clock, phone, but i never run more then 2) It just seems wierd that it works when it wants and only affects coh playability. Im assuming it has something to do with the power being supplyed to the GPU? Cause this problem also happens in safe mode.

I apologize. I was under the impression it was happening like every other day or at least once a week. lol

Have you checked the AC line quality to see if the power is clean? It should provide consistent power over a period of time with steady draw. If your PC's power supply is ramping up to feed power to your video card, thereby increasing the draw on the outlet, that could start some power imbalance for you that could affect your GPU (realistically, your whole system).

Take a look at this little article as a reference:

For a PC, I'd always go with a small UPS. (I lump a PS3, TiVO, XBOX, etc into this category.) It sounds like your power draw is skewed here. A UPS would help smooth that out, but long-term, you should have the outlet addressed.

Have you tried another outlet that's on a different circuit, and see if it works off the surge bar there?

This may explain the problems I have with my laptop. (For the record, I don't know anything substantial about computers other than how to use the software I've been trained on, so please don't bash me.) I have a Dell XPS M1730 which has Dual Nvidia GeForce 8700M-GT in SLI cards. If my PS comes just a little bit loose from the laptop, the battery kicks in, shuts down one of the Nvidia cards and my graphics go to hell in a hand basket. As soon as I plug the PS securely back into the laptop, the battery turns off, both video cards start working correctly and all is good. I don't know a longterm fix, but at least I know what to do to fix the immediate problem.

I wonder if you are having a similar problem, GreenSpot. You say you do fine when the PS is plugged directly into the wall. Do you think your PS is coming loose in other areas? Have you tried a new PS?

Update:
I went to my local micro center and found the cheapest 600w psu i could find(was running a 475). $30!! I just popped it in and it booted up on the first button press and coh is functioning normally. I guess it was a combination of the power surge and the possible fact that i just didn't have enough power output for my recent upgrades. Thanks all that responded. I really appreciate the second opinions!
