New 285 GTX GPU running hot in UM

Posted

Just got a new nVidia 285GTX video card for UM and was playing at max for about 10 minutes when I got a temperature shutdown. So I got SpeedFan to check the temperatures and it was going over 70C constantly. So I scaled back features, particularly the Advanced Occlusion Settings to get the temperature at a constant 63C.

The Desktop system has 5 fans and a water-cooled dual core processor and all fans appear to be operating. I just cleaned the case. If I run at the Recommended Setting the temperature drops to 54C.

So my questions are: Is that still too hot? Am I going to burn out the card? Should I find a better cooling solution?

... GTX cards run hot. Period.

Honestly, if you just bought it, return it, save yourself $75+ bucks over what you probably spent, and get a RadeonHD 5850. It'll run faster, give you DX11 / OpenGL 4.0 support, and run a lot cooler. If you still like playing in the $400+ bracket, pick up the RadeonHD 5870 instead, which is a heck of a lot faster, and again, a lot cooler.

The motherboard has a nVidia chipset and I am still a bit gun-shy about Radeon's ATI and CoX. Are there any other options? I am not worried about $400 price range.

70C doesn't seem like it's that bad for that card. As you know, there are ways to make it better, but I don't think it should be shutting you down unless you have a third party program shutting you down based on a generic/default setting.

It's a stupid question, but I have to ask... Are you sure it's not a power issue? Using it for a little while might be putting too much load on the power supply and shutting you down. Did you ensure it can handle the new card before you upgraded? and/or is the card on it's own dedicated lines to get a strong clean power signal at all times?

I have a 500 watt power supply which the card spec indicated was more than enough. I was running two 7950 GTs before. I have no third party software that I know of.

While that's true, it also specifies it have access to at least 42A on the 12V rails. What are your specs? Just because you have a 500W supply, does not mean it fits all the requirements.

For example, even my 750W supply doesn't make it with four 19A 12V rails, 2 of them dedicated to video for a total of only 38A.

On a side note, I just checked the NVidia site and they list the Max Temp at 105C, so your current temp shouldn't be much of an issue.

If the temperature max is that high what is shutting down my system? Hmmm. Does SpeedFan report the amps anywhere?

I'm not sure, but your power supply should have a label on it somewhere that details it's Specifications. If you can't find that or don't know how to read it, try to get a model number so we can look it up for you.

NVidia also lists the Maximum Graphics Card Power at 204W, and the Minimum Recommended System Power at 550W (which would go up depending on how many other devices you have in your rig). Link: GeForce GTX 285 (Click on Specifications)

I got the 42A value from a product on newegg.com, I suppose it could vary slightly by manufacturer recommendations, but I don't think it'd be much different.

Ok cracked the case it is by NZXT Model PP500 says +3.3V 34A, +5V 40A, +12V1 16A, +12V2 17A, -12V .8A, and 5VSB 25A.

I'm going to guess this may be your problem. I'm going to assume 12V1 is shared with the system and peripherals, with 12V2 possibly dedicated to video.

How did you even connect the video card to it? The specs only list 1 6pin PCIe Connector, and the card typically requires 2. Even if you used Y adapters to combine a bunch of peripheral slots together, they are still running off the same rails. Putting them both together only gets you to 33A total, which wont be enough for that card at full load.

I think a machine like this might turn on and operate just fine.. until you start gaming and turning on more preferences that requires it to work harder and use more power. Not enough power on a dedicated rail usually results in strange artifacts on the screen, flickering or black screen. Since you're using sharing power, the motherboard or other devices may be the ones shutting you down because the video card is trying to take all the power for itself. This might make it feel like it's a heat shutdown when it's really not.

Are you getting any error messages or prompts telling you why it's shutting down, or does it just go dead?

You might be in the market for a new Power Supply if you want to really utilize what that card has to offer.

But don't take my word for it.. Hopefully somebody else will chime in and give their opinion about it as well.

It used two 6 pin connectors that I just happened to have from the two 7950GTs I had before.

Ok definitely not heat related I just booted up COH had SpeedFan going and it reported only 50C on the GPU and I had a failure. So maybe a new power supply is in order. So 600W then?

Well I want to get this up and running this weekend so maybe I'll see what Best Buy has in power supplies.

Make sure you pay more attention to the 12V ratings than the Wattage numbers alone. The ones Cynical_Gamer linked above each have a single 12V rail rated for 52A, which should be just fine for you.

If you go into Best Buy or another local retailer to get one, make sure to find out how many 12V rails it has, and what they are rated for. I'd probably aim for at least 45A to be on the safe side.

Okay then check the +12V rail for minimum 42 Amps I think I can remember that. Thanks a bunch guys. Happy Gaming

No problem at all. Please let us know what you end up getting and how it worked out. Good luck!

Buy a good brand name, Corsair and Antec are well regarded and I've used both... of the two I'd give the nod to Corsair; I've had one Antec fail and never lost a Corsair.

Think overkill on the power supply too, 600W would probably work but a few dollars more would get you a 700 or bigger; I've found it's always better to have a unit that can easily handle the load than one that's just enough, the less it has to work the longer it's likely to live.

While I typically buy components from Newegg I have picked up some items from Best Buy in your situation... something dies and I'm too impatient to wait for it to ship. I know Best Buy carries a decent line of supplies including both Corsair and Antec.

<edit>
Ah, I type too slow. Yeah, that's good advice to look for over 42 amps at 12v. I always tend to overpower my machines so I don't have to worry about the PS for a couple of upgrades.

COH has just been murdered by NCSoft. http://www.change.org/petitions/ncso...city-of-heroes

Got the Corsair 650W and things are running smooth so far. Stood in WW in Talos on Virtue and ran a couple of missions without a failure. Temperature is running about 83C on the GPU and 48C on my CPU Cores. Thanks again for your help and advice guys.
