I cannot log into COX, fire wall/maintenance...

Ever since I downloaded the new patch, I have not been able to log into COX. I have turned my fire wall off and I still can't get into the game.

I think this patch broke more things instead of fixing them.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

what error message are you getting when you try to login?

The game client was unable to connect to the login server. This may be due to a local network issue such as a firewall block, or may be because the login server is down for maintenance. Please check your network settings and try again, or check http://www.cityofheroes.com/servers/index.html for current server status.

I just allowed everything I could find about COX into the list of programs that my fire wall will let through and that did not work.

I have also turned off my fire wall again and I still can't log into COX.

this is going to sound like a stupid question, but can you even get to www.plaync.com and login to your account there?

Yes, I just did, why?

making sure you could actually get into the account.

Thing is, when you get that particular error message, either the login server is down, a port being blocked, or the account is disabled. So, basic troubleshooting. While some particular in-game servers are crashing, the login server itself still seems to be accessible on a general basis. So we can be pretty sure it's not the login server. If you can access the account via plaync.com, we can be pretty sure that your account access is not blocked.

So, the last step is take a look back at your firewall and system configuration, since we can be pretty sure the problem isn't on the server side.

What... firewall are you using? Some software firewalls, like Norton and McAfee's software firewalls... don't actually disable the firewall even though they tell you they are disabled. Some software firewalls will also lock down ports that were used by a particular program if that program was determined to be a virus or malicious piece of software. I am aware that some of the past couple of patches were flagged as malicious software, so that could be an issue. You might also need to check for other potential firewall conflicts, such as Microsoft Windows Firewall being activated when / if you turned a 3rd party firewall off.

Off the top of my head, this really is sounding like a Norton or McAfee issue, but I've also seen this kind of problem with Kaspersky.

Actually I did just get rid of Norton and Avast, (Avast just won't die).

So your saying that Microsoft Windows Firewall is not turning off?

That's a very good possibility. When I was working for Cox Communications, one of our first troubleshooting steps was to try and disable the Windows Firewall.

We need to find out if this is that issue though.

Click on the start menu please, and then click on the button that says run (windows xp). If you are running Windows 7, click into the search bar.

Type in cmd

Then hit enter.

This SHOULD bring up the command terminal.

If it does not bring up the command terminal, go back to the run / search bar and type out: command

***

With the command prompt up, type in the following: tracert 206.127.152.87

Hit enter.

This will attempt to access one of the login servers. Now, Paragon Studios / NCSoft seems to only have one port open, so trace routes and pings will time out / not respond.

What we are interested in is whether or not you get to your ISP.

If you get request-time out-with an IP address of 127.x.x.x or 192.x.x.x, and no further ip address's, then the problem is within your computer / home network.

If you get a request-time-out and then further IP addresses, the problem is going to be on your ISP's side, or your ISP's connection to the Internet Back Bone.

I got both actually.

If it helps, I have been having a similar problem, although it seems to have resolved itself.

Before the new patch, no trouble logging in. After the new patch, I tried logging in (today, actually -- I have been away for a week). I got the classic hang-time as my system tries and fails to connect to the login server, then the message you posted earlier (unable to log in, please check firewall settings, etc.). I tried a couple more times. On the third attempt I got a message saying "That account is already logged in." (I suppose my second attempt actually got through somehow, despite my computer showing a rejection message). On the fourth attempt I was able to log in quickly.

Something's wonky, and I'm not sure it's on our end. Anyone else having such issues?

if the traceroute is to be believed then, connection is being lost at http://www.limelightnetworks.com/

Right off hand, this particular issue "looks" like an issue with the backbone provider between SBC and Paragon Studios.

Does this mean that it's not my fault then? But Paragon Studios? If that's the case, this means that I'll have wait for a patch to fix this then right? :/

Thank you for helping me by the way.

KoIS, has support asked you to run the Network Tool yet? You might want to run it and see if your connection passes.

I'd suggest running the network tool mentioned. It might help point where the problem is.

It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.

I got it by opening up CoH in console mode, logging in, and pulling the last address from the console box.

I'll have to try this out when I get home.

Every time I try to open the network tool in a program, it says that the program, Adobe Reader for example, it cannot read the file because it is not the supported file or it has been damaged.

It should take me to the right program if that's the case. :/

Anyway, I'm still rather stumped. I hope that NC-Soft releases a patch that will let me back in because if this patch registered as a virus to my fire wall, then maybe a new patch will correct that.

Also, this was already done.

If the above link does not work, you may need to set your FTP mode to passive. If you are using Internet Explorer, this option is located in the menu Tools > Internet Options... > Advanced > Use Passive FTP (for firewall and DSL modem compatibility).

But then again, I use Google Chrome now, but I thought doing that might help. *shrugs*

I decided to download Zone Alarm since my resident tech guy said that installing a new fire program and turning it off would work. It didn't, I'm still getting the same ******* error! >_<

So as of now, this is on NC-Softs/Paragon Studios end and I hope that they fix this asap. Just put in a new patch to all SBC Global Users or any other users who are having the same problem as me.

KoIS, you save the file, then you run it after you download it. Its called netinfotool_allOS_USEU.exe and all you do is double click on it and respond to its prompts. It will create a log file of its results.

Yes but what program do I run it with after I finish downloading it though?

you don't run it with any other program.

What you download IS a program.

For some reason, after I download it and try to open it, it gives me a list of programs to view it in.
