Okay, so I've tweaked my settings that allow me to use and older ATI graphics card w/ultra. The only thing left is the looooong time it is taking to change screens when traveling from one area to another...any suggestions or is this a common problem waiting for the next patch?

The load time between zones isn't really a graphics thing (and it's not new).

It's a machine-horse-power thing.

The single biggest "fix" for long load times between zones is to have enough RAM on your machine.

Going from 1 gig RAM to 2-3 gig RAM has in the past made some machines go from minutes to seconds on load time.

If you're really having a lot of problems, I'd recommend you go post a thread in the Technical section of the forums. There's a ton of people over there who will happily help you optimize what you've got now and give reasonable recommendations on how to improve things.

This. I had a fairly wheezy old machine that could play CoH but it drove me crazy how long it took me to zone. I upgraded it to 4GB and zoning went from a couple of minutes to about 30 seconds.

What they said. 2GB is my minimum recommendation for XP and CHV. 3GB min for Win7 and CHV. I run 6GB on my Win7-64bit rig. (But I doubt anyone would notice the difference in load times between 2GB and anything higher without a stopwatch unless they run a bunch of garbage in the background while they play.)

Be well, people of CoH.

Basically - once the bar on the loading screen starts to move - even if it's just a hair and then stops - it is all your machine.

Yep, more RAM makes a huge difference in loading times... up to about 3GB. After you've reached 2+GB of RAM the next item to speed up zoning would be a faster hard drive... my machine with 4GB went from an average load time of 15 seconds on a relatively fast 7,200 RPM drive to roughly 5 seconds when I bought a solid state drive.

I have played on a 1GB system that I upgraded to 2GB... the change from 1GB to 2GB of RAM cut my load times by about a factor of 3, moving from 2GB to 4GB only had a very minor effect.

To make a long story short, if you have less than 2GB of RAM that should be your very first upgrade. Once you've at least 2GB then you probably get more benefit from looking elsewhere for more performance.

When I started playing this game back in I6, I only had 256m of RAM (on dialup, no less). It literally took 5-7 minutes to zone. Needless to say, I was not fun to team with.

Dec out.
