Driver question

I have a question in regards to drivers... I have noted comments from various people that drivers should be updated, especially with the release of Ultra Mode. I am normally hesitant to update drivers because every time I do, things get buggered up.

Well, I decided to try. I wasn't sure the best way to go about it, so I went through my control panel/ device manager. It searched online and found an update for me and automatically installed it (without asking). As expected, I am now having the screen flicker and behave strangely.

From what I can see (I am not the best at this sort of thing...) I have a Geforce 8400M GS. At least that's the only name I can find. I wanted to go to the Nvidia site and see if I can find something to fix it, but from what I saw, I need to buy this "driver detective" and pay for the drivers. I thought they were free (again, really... I am a noob at this).

Any advice to get my computer working right again and properly up to date?

Since installing this new driver, my fan has also come on and I seem to be generating more heat than before.

Laptop or desktop?

Also, in the development section of the forums (Dev Digest, the i17 beta forums, etc) is a "technical issues and bugs" forum - that's also a player-help-player forum for hardware/technical issues like this, and I recommend you (re) post this there.

Also, run this as well - give info about your system the tech-types can decipher.

Laptop.

I just did a system restore to remove it, but now it is rather... slow.

You don't have to pay for drivers. Sounds like you saw an ad for something or other.

Best way of updating, generally:
1. Download drivers. Yes, go to nVidia's site, there should be a pretty plainly marked "drivers and downloads. "Also as I recall there, there'll be a button that'll detect them or some such.... here. Download, save, do not run yet.

2. Download and install Driver Sweeper. Don't let it remove anything yet.

3. Go to control panel. Add/remove (or "uninstall a program," depending on windows version.) Pick nVidia Display drivers. (if it gives you an option for Chipset, All, or just Display, DO NOT remove Chipset drivers. These are for your mainboard. We're just worrying about video right now.)

4. When finished, it will reboot. Start hitting F8 to go into Safe Mode. (If it lists hard drives, hit escape, then hit F8 right away. Should bring you to a windows advanced menu. Pick safe mode from there.)

5. When it reboots in safe mode, run the driver cleaner. Pick nVidia display drivers. Let it clean up. Reboot. don't touch anything.

6. When it finishes rebooting, your screen will look odd. Try to cancel out of any automatic driver installs Windows tries. Then run the file you downloaded from nVidia.

Reboot when finished.

I was trying to follow these instructions from another of your very helpful threads but when I went to Add/Remove, I couldn't find anything listed that even looked vaguely like the drivers for my card (which I believe is the exact same card or one much like it as the OP's). I'm not at home right now so I'd have to re-double-check, but I was taking my time when I went through the list. Three times.

I did get the game to a more workable bunch of setting, so even if I never get to update the driver I should be fine. On the other hand, it'd be nice t see that few extra percent of quality.
