Just recieved this by e-mail from XFX:

Quote:
Dear XFX Customers,

In light of recent events, we have come to suspect that one of our 5970 Black Edition Limited cards may have been compromised. In our current inventory check of this limited run of 1,000 individually serialized pieces, #68 has been unaccounted for. Due to evidence of a security breach in our facility, we believe it to have been illegally obtained as the product has yet been released per the embargo date. Please be aware that the person responsible will be subject to persecution by law. If any news can be provided to lead us to the apprehension of the suspect, or you can provide us with any information, please report it to security@xfxforce.com. Please do not attempt to buy, trade, or barter for this unit. We thank you for your cooperation and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Sincerely,
XFX
Has the world gone mad?

Why would somebody take #68? Why not just go for 69?

Then again, if the first one is #0, that would make #68 the 69th one.

Anyway..

Looks like a hoax to me.

Comments like

subject to persecution by law

definitely look supsicious correct would be

subject to prosecution under law

apart from that why would XFX want to send this out to a large number of customers alienating them?

It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.

Gaia makes a good point. So, I went to the website, thinking that if it's news enough to send in an e-mail, it'd be news enough to be on the website. There's only one news entry for 2010, and it's dated January 14.

Then, I did a Google search. I typed in xfx and the first option to appear in the search bar was xfx security alert. That lead me to this page. Of note on that page: "We know it’s a “gamertainment” campaign because the legal print at the bottom of the e-mail says so."

Interesting way to attempt to hype up the card's release...

The link I referenced includes a link to an apparent sale of the item on Ebay. Current bid is at $5600. (That's no typo). Someone with some seriously deep pockets wants it pretty badly.

Not only is the bid up to $5600, but it's $20 more for shipping.. and get this:
"Estimated delivery within 31-36 business days."

Maybe it'll get released by then anyway. haha

I found a story flaw in their advertising though...
The E-bay info explains what they had to go through to get the card and links to the YouTube video.
But the girl in the video took the card, not the guys with the camera, and she didn't seem to have much trouble at all.

Sure, story-wise, anybody could have taken the camera and posted the video, but...

On the YouTube page, the info implies that one of the guys posted the video, meaning the person who posted the video and the person who has the card cannot be the same person, so why would the Ebay link to the video? No logical sense there.

Also, the YouTube info asks people "If you have any information please let me know." (about the whereabouts of his friend), but then goes on to say " This video is part one. I'm uploading the second part in a few days."

If your friend was gone, wouldn't you just upload it as 1 part, or upload both parts at the same time? Why wait a few days? Definitely sounds like one of those illogical things people in movies would do. rofl

haha Thumbs Up to them though.
