Dirty Traitors
Last night I did the "prove yourself to Marcus Valerius" mission with my DA/Ice. Settings were 0/3/boss/no av.
It was veeerryyy painful. I felt like a regen scrapper on a bad day. I didn't think I would have too much trouble because his armor is mostly res. I now know how much I have been relying on the control powers of Ice melee and they don't usually work on Cimerorans. So after a faceplant or two plus some humble pie i stealthed to the target and called out a wolf and a snowman and wiped him and his cronies out. I then hunted Romans until my pets died than i said adios to Cimerora. I'll fight them again sometime when my shields are slotted up more and I need something challenging. |
Regardless of the build, Tankers are better off trying to get through spawns of Cimmies quickly. I know I haven't had much issue with either my Inv/SS or my SD/SS Tankers, but that's because one has very good Lethal resists and the other is softcapped, and can usually maintain it against a Cimmie onslaught (plus can Shield Charge/Footstomp nuke most of them), but without such, Cimmies can be tough.
But they're meant to be tough. They're not just a bunch of Romans, they're of the status of legendary warriors, slightly minor compared to the great heroes of Homer and Greek legend, as the Romans themselves often liked to believe themselves. It's fun that they can be that tough.
I haven't seriously fought Cims on anything besides my tricked out Str/Will Brute for awhile. It is a razors edge with him, for bigger groups I hit my uber power so I get 2 minutes of relief. For the rest I tend to try to take on small mobs, cleanup, move on. I can kill them pretty fast, but I can get overwhelmed pretty fast if the balance shifts. Those cims are vicious. Now I have a dark/dark tank at 33. I want to ask you, were you running the Confuse aura toggle and the Fear aura toggle, and if so, was it working to mitigate attacks?

I thought that tanker would be a Swiss army knife of control, but the primary controls are weak without specific help from the secondary. Ice gives help, but it's different help.

A well built/slotted DA should do okay against Romans. You have ~70% S/L resists and a fantastic heal. Even w/o DDR, a high S/L def will give you some respite in the beginning of fights, and your def will climb back up in between fights. */Ice should still help w/mitigation by slowing down incoming attacks, even if they're not flopping or being held as easily. I'll take my Dark/Mace through some Cim missions later and see how it fares (haven't done an ITF w/him yet), but I find it difficult to imagine having a lot of trouble w/just x3 when I've tanked x8 ITFs w/my Fire w/identical S/L numbers and an inferior heal (tho Burn sometimes helps).
Note, if you don't have Tough, you're obviously going to be in a lot more pain going against Romans. But then, I'd include that in my definition of "well built". YMMV.
An Offensive Guide to Ice Melee
Well, I have acctually held a authentic Gladius before.Which would be the sword of the Roman Soldiers. The thing is so heavy at the hilt, that its no wonder it hits so hard.
Put one in your hand and youll know what I speak of.Its a power hitting weapon.
Here's my dirty DA Tanker trick for dealing with those guys (or any melee types that can hurt me) when soloing: Oppressive Gloom. Seriously. It may be a pain chasing stragglers around but it's better than getting hit and it costs no endurance at all. Once the numbers are thinned and the Lt's and bosses are liquidated turn OG back off and tidy up.
Same trick turns Arachnos into pussycats.
