ATI 5770 not as visually nice as my Nvidia 275?

Heya all:

I recently purchased a Dell system (Studio XPS 8100, i7-860 2.8Ghz octo, 8GB DDR3, ATI Radeon 5770 1GB) and am in the process of going thru a burn-in test and running my most recent games for FPS checks. Something I noticed with the ATI card vs my Nvidia GeForce 275 896MB is that the image quality seems a bit flat; most notably the inability for ATI drivers to handle FSAA AND hi-rez water textures/bloom, but also in general color depth.

I've updated to the latest Catalysts (had to, the ones that came with-system were atrocious), so until the 10.4's are out that's where I stand. My questions here:

1. Is there anything I can do to optimize my ATI card? BillZ's post from 2 years ago has a lot of activity in there and it's getting headachey to find something of use in that regard. However, "if it's in there", a link would be helpful, and I promise not to bother again.

2. Are there any other guidance worth noting for a new Win7/ATI user? My previous box was a diehard XP system (still working fine, just wanted Ultramode-level bling) with the Nvidia card, so I haven't paid attention to the ATI scene in a while. Sadly, I can't SLI in this box (but AFAIK COH doesn't get any benefit from SLI), but I'm open to any other bits of direction here.

Thanks all, and I look forward to your tutelage. XD

-T.

Well you're in luck as I17 will fix the ATI/CoH issues. Go hit the test server if you want a preview. The issues on Live stem back to the old partnership with Nvidia which caused the game to be more optimized for Nvidia cards and left ATI users out in the cold to a certain degree. Once I17 hits Live, you should see a nice improvement in performance.

It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.

One of the few problems remaining with ATI cards when running I17 looks like it will be fixed in the 10.4 drivers as well.

Now, if they'll hurry up and release those drivers ....

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I forget the name: Digital Vibrancy perhaps, I can't remember, is a feature only on Nvidia drivers. I wonder if that is what he is talking about.

With Issue 17, all current ATi issues are gone. Depth of field, water effects, and FSAA all work perfectly.

All Ultra Mode features work perfectly too! But you can't use antialiasing with ambient occlusion at the same time. This is the one last remaining niggle, and it should be sorted before it hits live.
