Thoughts On: Build, Use Of -Res Procs and Attack Chain

Hey all,

Your thoughts on the following would be appreciated before I spend some big chunks of hard earned Inf.

I have been refining my Fire/Shield Scrapper. I am disappointed in her damage output and plan on respec'ing her to the attack chain of:

Fire Sword (FS) - Cremate (Cr) - Incinerate (In)

I am curious as to the effects of adding in Fire Sword Circle (FSC) and Laser Beam Eyes (LBE) if I were to put in the -Res procs in each. Also, does it make sense to include Shield Charge (SC) when its up. I get the sense it would because I see SC do damage >1000 pts to lower level mobs and 400-500 to harder targets if I recall correctly.

So how would an attack chain of:

FSC-LBE-SC-(FS-In-Cr)x3
VS
(FS-Cr-In)x4-SC

look? My math is bad but it looks like to me that if you have a damage bonus of 20%(given that the target has damage res to mitigate) running 40% of the time of the next 10 seconds then your damage bonus would be about 115 pts, which when added to the FSC-LBE damage would just about equal one cycle of FS-In-Cr dps. (Actually the damage bonus would be bit less because the -20% would be running 8-10 seconds depending on which proc hit.) So, if I am doing this right, using the -res procs in 1vs1 single target damage situations the procs will actually lower your dps slightly. BUT! In team situations the damaged added would be much greater and more than off-set the loss to the scrapper. Even in a 2v1 situation the addition of the procs pays off.

Please tell me I am correct in my understanding that Scorch has lower DPS and does not belong in an optimized attack chain.

I am posting my build below - please critique. The point of the build is having her at the def soft cap or close and single target damage, but she gets used to farm a little.

If I don't end up respec'ing the -res proc into FSC I would use the Alt slotting for FSC and Shield Charge. If I do that, then the question becomes, do I drop the Focused Accuracy and it's -res proc and the 1.5% damage bonus and swap into Grant Cover for the -Def Resistance and move a slot over to Incinerate and add a damage proc there?

Based on my desire to be near the soft cap how is my slotting? Have I given up too much def on ranged/AOE to get more damage? I will include my current build for comparison when I manage to locate it.

You typically want -Res procs in quick, single target attacks to keep the effect going constantly. They are less useful in AOE's because you cannot pick the target you are going to apply them too.

So a possible yes on LBE, and a no on Fire Sword Circle.

Posted

But if I was on only a single target the AOE of FSC would apply to the only target in range? (I.e. An AV) And in an AOE does the proc have a 20% chance to affect each target in range?

Posted

You would want a single target attack chain to deal with AV's. AOE's typically have lower damage to account for their ability to hit multiple targets. As such, they are suboptimal for fighting a single target.

Yes, a proc has a chance to activate with every enemy it hits.

It would probably be more beneficial to slot up your AOE with damage procs.

Well don't have time to look at your build but Scorch is a good attack. Not as good as FS but it does have ok DPS. I run Incinerate>Scorch>Cremate>Scorch for my Attack chain with my Fire/SD. Scroch as better DPE than Fire Sword and it is a lot easier to get the rech down for Scroch than Fire Sword.

Was the attach chain question too complicated? I am surprised the number gurus didn't weigh in on this one. Or has it been done to death and my searches just missed the threads?

DPE = Damage Per Endurance? If that is the case then I don't really need to worry about DPE on this toon since as she is currently slotted she does not have end problems at all.

First off, that build you copied had the +rech in kick turned on. I hope you actually ignored that in your calculations.

I just ran some numbers through really quickly and it seems as though you would actually run into end problems. First off, you didn't take any of the accolades, which hurts quite a bit. Secondly, mids' still enhances the unique values of regen and recovery, when in game these values aren't (or won't soon) be enhanceable (I think? they are fixing that, right? if it isn't already). That means your recovery will actually be lower than listed in mids'.

Now I don't factor in arcanatime simply because I'm a supernoob, but just off base values, your end consumption from fs/cr/inc (x5)/sc was about .26 end higher than your net end gain (end gain - toggles end cost) I didn't factor in BU which might make your end a little better, being that it's about .1end/s from your build. Overall, your end is slowly dropping. According to my nubbishness.

on the whole LBE -res thing... my vote is "no", it's not worth it. You'd probably be doing more just with your normal attack string.

If you use LBE every 10 seconds it works out to be 4% -res. If you use LBE every 10 seconds it means you are using a 1.85 second attack that does paltry damage. I really don't see it adding in the long run.

Even with the apoc proc in LBE it is still going to have considerably worse DPA than any of the fire attacks. It is about 20 DPA worse than a non-proc'd scorch with just 95% damage enhancement. It will only get worse with more +dam cause the proc is carrying it so much in that figure.

Same thing goes for FSC, as a single target attack its DPA isn't as good as the other fire attacks. So again spamming it every 10 seconds (aside from being an huge end sink) for a 4% increase in total damage isn't going to net you anything other than less damage and an empty blue bar.

Melt armor, which is a pretty weak power for scrappers, is a much better choice than what you are considering for boosting damage.

So FS/Cr/In with BU and SC thrown in when up would be the attack chain of choice?

Oh and yes I did notice that recharge proc was on and turned it off in my mids.

AND! Now that I found out they are nerfing BotZ this build is a bit done. Back to the drawing board but I want the right attacks.

FS/Cr/In?

As far as end consumption goes, does Mids consider the Performance Shifter Proc in the Recovery value it shows?

Posted

No it does not. Perf proc adds ~0.2 eps over time, but is of course random and in bursts, but ya.

I believe a chain of GFS, cremate, incin is the "best" but requires a lot of recharge.

You should search through the scrapper boards a bit more, I know the fire chains were talked about in length a month or so ago.

SC has an unenhanced DPA of 116.5, which would make it very worthwhile.
iirc SC has one of the highest DPA's in the game once you eliminate the fast casting blaster nukes (ie dreadful wail). Pretty impressive for a defense power.... and an aoe...and on a short timer...and with kd....and with a huge aoe....and only costs as much as headsplitter.... which it does more damage than...and with a built in teleport...

Of note though if you plan to use it as part of your single target attack chain is two things.
1. you need to target the recticle which often means it takes a bit longer than the actual cast time.
2. shields performs FAR better when surrounded by enemies fueling AAO. SC is so powerful it usually eliminates all of them.

I've been pretty busy, so very quick non-numbers reply from memory. FS>CR>INC is decent. Generally speaking, don't put a -resist proc in an AoE unless it's something like Head Splitter, but if you team all the time, then maybe. Don't use Laser Beam Eyes - the poor damage will hurt you more than the proc will help you. Scorch is good in INC>Scorch>CR>Scorch for a good DPS good DPE (damage per endurance) lowish recharge chain. shield Charge is for destroying groups.

Cool - now I just need to see how my changes (Due to BotZ nerf) to reflect I am losing 1.5% ranged/AOE on my current build affect my recharge and decide between GFS-In-Cr or FS-In-Cr
