DP/Dark Corrupter Questions
Personally I would consider Suppressive Fire and Petrifying Gaze to be fairly skipable. Obviously, if you take one, you'd like the other to stack the holds, but neither has that long of a hold on them, and let's be honest, you're not a controller or dominator. Locking down a single boss in group play isn't worth the attention and time compared to dealing more damage and using more of your other Dark debuffs, especially the aoe debuffs.
Another thing I think, just in general when looking for skipable powers: find that one power that sits on your bar fully recharged. The one you think "huh, I haven't used that in a few minutes, I should fire it off" or "I'm not using that one 'cause I don't want to be stuck with it recharging in an emergency" or "I only have that power as a back-up in case this specific bad situation comes up, otherwise I don't need it." That's the one you probably want to drop. Powers you're not using aren't needed (usually).
Howdy all. I've been playing a DP/Dark corrupter as one of my characters (Currently at 37), and I was hoping to glean some useful tips from more knowledgeable and experienced players. Here are some informational tidbits that I will preface with:
1) My interest is primarily in grouping and maybe a little bit of soloing. I have no interest in PvP. 2) In the foreseeable future, I will most likely not have access to purple-quality IO sets due to lack of funds and time. 3) I have no powers that I'll take simply due to character concept; I'm leaving myself open to taking things that will prove to be useful. 4) So far, I've taken Hasten and Stamina and will assume those to be fairly solid picks. 5) I don't "have" to take a travel power, but it'd be nice. With that said, I'm fine relying on Sprint/Ninja Run + Raptor Pack. 6) I want to make a viable and effective build from the ground up; the slots and time at which I am taking powers should make sense for leveling. With that said, here are some of my observations so far in playing my DP/Dark corrupter. 1) It seems like almost every power in Dark Miasma secondary is useful, outside of Black Hole. This is normally not a bad thing, except... 2) In my observations with Dual Pistols, while being (In my opinion) a fairly low-moderate damage set, it seems like almost every power in the Primary is worth taking as well with the possible exceptions of Executioner's Shot or Pistols. 3) I'm assuming that each of the Dual Pistol powers that I take will be heavily slotted (5-6). I'm not so sure how to slot the Dark Powers though, given that I see a lot of people post builds that include extremely expensive IO's (Nothing wrong with that, just that I don't have the resources to kit out this character as such). Alright, so having said all that, if there are any suggestions for DP/Dark builds that would be effective and fit the above criteria, that'd be greatly appreciated. But that wouldn't even be necessary; just figuring out which Dual Pistol powers are keepers and which are worth dropping would also be great (I've tried them all, but I'm not sure about which ones are worth dropping, or if any are worth dropping at all). I've been playing around with Mid's (Although it keeps bugging out the moment I add Swap Ammo), but I'm pretty bad when it comes to figuring out slotting/order of powers to take pre-40. Thanks in advance. |
2) If you take Tactics, I found 5 slots in Twilight Grasp (using the Doctored Wounds set), works nicely. I'd slot it different with out sets.
Tar Patch, 2 slots, both Recharges.
Darkest Night, 4 slots, Dark Watcher's Despair is what I use for my build to get the +5% RCH.
Shadowfall...the a different beast all together and can go alot of different ways. For me, it always seems to get 5 slots (though it tends to get them late game).
Fearsome Stare, pick a set you want to go for by set bonuses, and slot it! It's really that simple. You can't go wrong with slotting up the Fear or the ToHit, it's a pretty great power right out of the box.
Dark Servant, I like to slot with 4 Basilisk's Gaze (easy to obtain if you're just willing to run some AE, to random roll for the recipes). That's a +7.5% RCH, then I give it 1 or 2 more slots, depending on the build. Again, once fully IO'ed, I can see someone skipping Fluffy, but it just feels wrong to do so. I've contemplated it on my Dark Miasma toon, but havent been able to bring myself to do it.
5 slot Dual Wield and Bullet Rain, I'd 6 slot all the other attacks in DP.

Much obliged for the recommendations so far. One question that came to mind; besides Suppressive Fire, which Dual Pistol attacks are worth skipping? I've heard varying opinions on Pistols, Executioner's Shot, and Piercing Rounds (Although it looks to me like Piercing Rounds is a keeper). I assume it'd be a waste to take every Dual Pistol attack.
How much of a waste it is to take all of them depends on a lot of factors. Do you want to do more aoe or single target damage? How much +recharge do you have? Do you care about having a full attack chain? How much time can you fill in-between attacks with casting stuff from your secondary?
Unfortunately, support types just don't have it as easy as melee/blasters who can just build an attack chain and chuck out most of the attacks that aren't part of the chain. A lot of it is going to be by feel and personal preference.
That said, one thing to look at is Damage per Activation (DPA). That is, the damage of the power divided by it's activation/animation time. The powers with the highest DPA will be the most efficient damage output per second assuming you never sit waiting for powers to recharge and always have something to click. If you have gaps, though, recharge rates become more of a factor.

Pistols is a solid DPA attack and will help get you through the early levels especially. Executioner's Shot and Piercing Rounds are the two biggest hitters in the set--I have no idea why people would suggest skipping these, I'd suggest missing Hail of Bullets, the T9, before those two attacks. I'd have to say Empty Clips for it's somewhat longish animation and weak damage. While Rain of Bullets is not much better, it is at least easier to target with, and setted out, I'd take it ahead of Empty Clips by a long shot.

If for no other reason, consider ES for the 70% chance of knockback with Lethal rounds.
The people who say to skip ES and PR are the same ones who tell you to skip Mass Confusion on a Mind Controller because they see Seeds of Confusion as better. It's because of cross-power examination, not because the power is bad.

Not to say it's a bad set, but it's split between being a damage set and a debuff set, so it really doesn't excel at being either. Build with that in mind, and I think Corruptors can really win out beyond Blasters or Defenders with DP.
With some IOing, it will be pretty easy to soft cap S/L on DP/Dark with Black Scorpion's shield. Add to that the control of Dark and the debuffs of DP and you can be a force.
Depends on your play style. I can see the case for skipping the HOlds/stuns if you get enough of a solid attack chain. Personally I like having holds on most toons that solo. Considering you can get a Hold from you Patron as well you can however stack some nasty mag. I find DP damage to be weak so I like having that EB locked down while I whittle away at his health. However they are personal tastes and entirely skippable. I don't think they are vital to a build. They just offer some diversity and ways around certain obstacles.
IOs play a part as well. I can put basilisk 4x in each and in fluffy, plus a 4x in the patron hold. Thats 30% global rech for fairly minimal slotting. 2 Lotg in hover and def toggle and I'm upto 45%.
I would say find your play style and skip/choose powers that work with you, rather then based upon comparing them to how a similar power works in another set.

ES and PR I find to valuable! PR comes with a nice -resist attached to it when using it with Lethal Rounds as well!
Empty Clips can have a -resist slotted in it as well, but I don't skip it because it's more AOE.
In fact, I find I use all my attacks pretty often on my Defender (RAD/DP), I don't see why you wouldn't beable to use all your attacks pretty often on a Corrupter.
I only find SF skippable when it comes to Dual Pistols.

For Dark Miasma, I find Suppressive Rounds to be somewhat redundant. It's a great power, but you can already Stun, Fear, and Slow most of a spawn with relative ease. The Hold is nice, but not needed.
