New Video Card

OK, this isn't really a technical issue, I'm really seeking advice. About a month ago my PC died and I got a good deal on a "middle-of-the-line" HP machine (2.8 MHz dual-core, 3GB Mem). Unfortunately it came with the crappy integrated video card. I thought I would "limp" along for awhile and pick up a new card later. Well, now it's later. I'm curious what type of card might be good for the game? I'm not looking for top of the line, more like, in the ballpark of top of the line. I see the stickies with issues on both ATI and NVIDIA so is one better or is it just pick your poison?

This is a regular monthly column with some pretty good info: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...card,2569.html *Right now* and purely for CoH, one could say that Nvidia is best since ATI cards have more 'issues' with CoH's graphics. This is a legacy of the old partnership they had with Nvidia in the early days of the game. With I17, those issues should vanish, evening the field. At the present and in a general bang-for-the-buck manner, ATI has the better cards. So that's what is generally recommended. Nvidia does have some new top-line stuff coming out which may shuffle the field some and influence pricing but you'd have to wait a bit longer and see. Assuming you don't want to wait, that article should give you some good ideas and price points.

It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.

Do you have a price range? Are there any constraints such as your power supply? What operating system since I think DX11 and higher is only for Vista and Windows7 if I'm not mistaken.

Off the top of my head and making some assumptions from your email, my recommendation would be an ATI 5770. I think you can get one now for about $150 and they draw less power than cards offering similar capabilities. Plus it should be able to handle most of the Ultra Mode goodies.

We don' need no stinkin' signatures!

The problem with the 'middle of the line' PCs is that they usually have a weak power supply. So check your prospective video card power needs before you buy.

OK, thanks for the input. I'll have to check my power supply when I get home. As a little added info my price range is under $200. It looks like prices are much better than the last time I bought a card (a loooong time ago).
