All primaries have the ability to solo AVs (last I checked). The trick is getting enough survivability, endurance and recharge to complete the task.

Statesman, Lord Recluse, Ms Liberty, Silver Mantis, Baphomet, Diabolique.
Just to name a few that are unlikely to be taken down by SS alone (that is without temps/insps). Using large red inspirations will increase your chances, however.
I've taken down Silver Mantis and Baphomet with my SS/WP Brute but I do have Gloom which does offer a little exotic damage. Plus, Sands of Mu is nice during my Rage Crash(s). 
Can't remember if I had Gloom when I fought those two or not to be honest.
Silverado's advice is good, lots of red will help immensely since the damage cap is 850% for Brutes.
A couple of days late to the party, but there are a few AVs that get 100% resistance to Smashing for periods of time. In those cases you have to be able to get them before it recharges... Wretch is one (there were some screenshots a long time ago showing that the EM Brute soloing him was doing 0 smashing damage for a bit of the fight, and only hurting him with the energy portion). I think the Honoree doesn't quite get to 100% resistance but is close enough to not matter, and others have been listed in the thread.
