The power choice is ok. The IO has quite a bit of franken-slotting. From what I see, the set bonus is mainly +hp with a bit of +regeneration and +recharge.
For the melee attacks, you use the touch of death for the +hp. I think you can use kinetic combat, which has +hp and s/l defense bonus. For more damage, you can slot damage proc into your fast recharging attacks. Instead of franken-slotting your resistance, you can use Aegis for f/c defense bonus. I made a suggested build below, which keeps your power choice and soft cap typed defense except negative energy and psionic.
I don't think the Gaussian set has enough recharge for rage, and you probably don't want rage to drop. The chance for build up and the defense bonus is not really a lot. I think it's more efficient to franken-slot rage.
I believe energy drain can handle your endurance pretty well. Conserve power is probably useful for overload crash. As such, I don't think you need more than a slot for conserve power as it is already recharging faster than overload out of the box.
I think the stealth in energy cloak can stack with that of superspeed. I doubt that you really need celerity +stealth in superspeed. It's ok if you have it already.

thx for the help. on the attacks, i agree Kinetic Combat is what i would like ideally. this is my 1st 50 redside, and my 1st 50 since ive been playing again CoX with a market to play with. but yea--the +Psi Procs too. I retooled the power selection since i last posted and ended up steering away from Overload, since ive been farming the crash is something id rather not deal with. I also left out Energy Cloak...when i farm i enjoy all the aggro and the +stealth on it is counter production when tearing thru Lib farms and whatnot. ill prolly include it Overload and Energy Cloak on the alternate build or something. The rage thing kinda bugs me, it already has plenty of recharge, and is up all the time but i still get the crash so i figure i may as well get a set bonus out of it. between FS and Electric Fences/Ball lightnning i end up with a fairly decent AOE chain. i rlly enjoy playing this toon the EnG=bad thing i havent rlly noticed, but then again i dont play to tank i play to destroy. if i wanna tank redside id of rolled a stoner. I think i am going to go hero with this one-least there a brute can be a brute and not have to worry about ppl QQing about not taking taunt lol. i do have a taunt--its called Hurl :P
Depending on the type of mobs that you're fighting, overload may not be needed with soft-capped defense. It can be useful when fighting mobs with defense debuff. You can also use it to increase your hp when fighting AV. I think it's skippable if your build is tight.
For energy cloak, most people take it just because of the defense it offers. Energy cloak by itself doesn't make you invisible to mobs. If you stand close enough to the mobs, they will see you. With energy cloak, you've to work slightly harder to get aggro in large teams for fury, for example taunting more. I don't see many people complain brutes without taunt though. I take taunt myself because it's convenient to aggro a couple mob groups when I herd. If you solo, I don't think the stealth matters as all mobs are yours, attack them and you'll have the aggro even with stealth. Usually, energy cloak is not considered skippable, however if you're doing fine with what you're doing, I guess it's ok.
The discussion on energy aura being gimped has subsided. The performance of a power set depends quite a lot on what you're fighting, and the team that you are in. For my energy aura brute, soloing x8 missions are tough if the mobs are longbows, Arachnos or Cimerorans. Since these mobs are pretty common on the red side, energy aura gets a bad reputation. For Lib farm, I believe the vengeance should be problematic. It's ok if you manage to kill them fast all at once.
For rage, to avoid the defense debuff, you need to activate rage again before it crashes. For your posted build, I think you don't have enough recharge to double stack rage when hasten is not on. The damage debuff and the endurance drain from the crash can't be avoided though.
I think it's a concern that you're not soft-capped, even though it's fairly easy to do so with EA.
One of the advantages of having typed defense instead of positional is that getting defense bonuses takes fewer slots, so even if you use, say, 3 or 4 slots in an attack to get a specific bonus, you can use the remaining slots to enhance it to the levels you want. For instance, 4 Smashing Haymaker plus two CI or Mako's will get to the ED cutoff for Damage, plus over 60% acc, end red, and recharge. If you prefer higher amounts of a specific attribute like recharge, you can pick the two final enhancements accordingly.
Also, though frankenslotting is great for attacks, it's not really very advantageous for defense and resistance powers. Once you're past the ED cut-off for defense or resistance you're really only gaining endurance reduction, and the amount of additional endurance you save by super-slotting for end red in a typical, non-damage toggle is *tiny*. You'd be far better off 4-slotting a set with desirable bonuses. For instance, I'd recommend 4-slotting Dampening Field and Tough with Reactive Armor for the S/L/E/NE bonuses. They're small, but it'll get you closer to the soft-cap, which is where you want to be.
Lastly, using one single-attribute IO from a set, like the Reactive Armor resistance IO in DF, or the Red Fortune endurance IO is a complete waste of Infamy. They're doing absolutely nothing more for you than a common IO of the same level would.

Here's your build soft-capped to S/L/E, with fairly minimal changes to slotting and set selection. F/C could be capped to, but that would take more substantial changes. Note that the ST attacks are very well slotted and hit the ED cutoff for damage, which some of yours weren't. I chose Gift of the Ancients for Weave and Energy Cloak because it has nice +end and +recovery bonuses, but you can use LotG or another set if you prefer. Also, though I didn't change it here, I would recommend that you delay Dampening Field so you can take Energy Cloak sooner. It has the same amount of defense as Weave, and is definitely worth taking.

ill definately have to rethink energy cloak, aside from the +def its another spot for more LotGs mostly just been farming lib, i solo them +1/+8 w/o much difficulty since im killing them fast enough to cap out on pretty much everything via inspirations. i dont see the point in trying it any higher-as i average a fair amount of purple drops, so the faster the better.

my SS/ENG Brute hit 50 recently, been toying around with a fun build designed to be damage heavy with a decent defense. nothing is final and im not sure i completely understood "Mids" but i did my best. hoping someone with enough imagination, would aid me in supercharging her for maximum damage. this is my solo build, a concept . if possible id like to add Overload into it. So yea, damage/recharge/footstomp/Mu-still have a solid single-target chain, as well as sick AoE's from the Mu set. this is my first attempt at mids, aimming no higher than +1/+8 mobs.
